Apple appeals Tokyo court patent ruling

Apple logoApple and Samsung’s business relationship can be said to have been burnt beyond repair, in fact, Samsung recently disclosed that they are just a “manufacturer” in Apple’s eyes, and who knows, Samsung might not even get any more contracts from Apple in the future. Having said that, Apple appealed the ruling of the Tokyo District Court earlier this morning, where the Tokyo District Court dismissed Cupertino’s claim that Samsung actually infringed on its smartphone and tablet computer patents.

Apple did ask for 100 million yen (approximately $1.27 million) in damages, and after the ruling, they have decided to appeal it by taking the case to the Intellectual Property High Court in Tokyo. No idea on just what the final verdict will be, and whether the appeal will be overturned or accepted, but we do know that a long and rocky road known as legal wrangles is up in store ahead for both Samsung and Apple.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Finds Student, Mortgage Lenders Have ‘Uncanny Resemblance’

The private student loan industry smells a lot like the subprime mortgage industry: Dead ends, runarounds and few live customer service representatives to speak with. The same tactics that mortgage borrowers have faced are now happening for student loan borrowers, according to a new report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The government watchdog on Tuesday released its annual report on student loans, including details from a database of complaints that opened to student loan borrowers in March.

“Student loan borrower stories of detours and dead ends with their servicers bear an uncanny resemblance to problematic practices uncovered in the mortgage servicing business,” CFPB student loan ombudsman Rohit Chopra said in a statement.

JWX-2 wheelchair assistant

Yamaha does not only make great bikes and musical instruments, they also have an arm that develops mobility aids for the impaired. In fact, their latest invention comes in the form of an electrical assist unit for wheelchairs that is known as the JWX-2. The JWX-2 will make full use of PAS technology from assisted bicycles to wheelchairs, where it will work alongside the load on the wheelchair’s hand rims, letting the wheelchair user operate smoothly on slopes, as that is when the load is high, as well as functioning nicely on carpets.

The JWX-2 is said to be able to be attached to just about any wheelchair, and when it works in tandem with the recently developed, flat AC servomotor, the axle position can be adjusted in the up-down and front-back directions to boot. Not only that, efficiency levels have increased, where travel range has been extended by approximately 20%. You can turn on and off the assist function through a button press, while left and right buttons are used to set different assist levels, letting one maneuver through steep and gentle slopes without missing a beat. Expect the JWX-2 to be released in spring next year as it is still being refined at this point in time. No idea on pricing, but take the current generation of wheelchair assists and it should be in that region thereabouts.

Nokia Lumia 920t is a China-only variant

What you see above is touted to be the Chinese version of the upcoming Nokia Lumia 920, where it will be known as the Lumia 920t. Now, China’s mobile networks run on a different spectrum than that of those elsewhere in the world, and the same can be said for Japan and South Korea. Well, to see a Lumia 920 variant developed specially for China does not surprise us, but rather, it is to be expected considering how in the past, the Lumia 800C (obviously a shout out to folks in China who want the Windows Phone-powered Lumia 810) was said to have done well for itself in the world’s most populous country.

Could this signal a shift in marketing and sales strategy for Nokia, as they work on a potentially lucrative market? This might be a big deal, considering how the iPhone 5 has yet to roll out in China, in fact, there are legal issues that need to be worked out before Apple’s best iPhone yet is able to arrive in that part of the world, so having a Lumia 920 variant does make plenty of sense as it fills a market need and offers first mover advantage of Nokia.

Your phone’s thirsty for Coke, not batteries

Most of our modern day smartphones run on lithium ion batteries, and while advancements have been made to increase the battery capacity so that theoretically, battery life is stretched as well, but smartphone manufacturers tend to negate that advantage by introducing even more energy sapping features and functions in newer devices. How about this – a phone that can be “charged” anywhere in the world, as long as there is some sweetened water, or in this case, Coca-Cola?

This is what Chinese designer Daizhi Zheng has come up with, where he claims to be working on this potentially revolutionary device for Finnish phone giant Nokia, and he has discovered a way to rely on sugar-based drinks such as Coca-Cola to power mobile phones. In fact, Zheng claims that any sugared drink will do, ever sugar-sweetened water. Something tells me that if such a device becomes mainstream, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone will come up with a Coke vs Pepsi battery life challenge. It does remain to be seen whether such an idea is viable in the long run, but if successful, it could prove worthy of being revolutionary. Do you think this is just a pie in the sky dream, or something achievable?
