AT&T LG Optimus G coming November 2 for $199

We’ve been hearing a lot of about LG‘s upcoming flagship phone, the Optimus G, and finally, details on availability and pricing have officially hit the airwaves — for AT&T at least. The carrier will launch the Optimus G on November 2 for a decent price of $199 after a two-contract has been signed.

We heard earlier this month that AT&T would be bringing over the LG Optimus G to its own network, but as with many announcements, pricing and availability were yet to be known. To say the least, we’re excited that they finally decided to give us the details that really mattered. And in just three weeks, the phone can be yours

The best part is, AT&T will begin receiving pre-orders starting tomorrow. Just visit their Optimus G page, and you’ll be able to reserve your phone as much as almost three weeks in advance. If the phone lives up to the hype, pre-orders should go pretty quickly, so you may want to stay on top of reserving your own before they end up possibly selling out.

To review, $199 will get you a 4.7-inch 1280×768 True HD IPS Plus display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor, an 8MP rear camera (sorry, no 13MP version like on the global model), 2GB of RAM, and dual-band AT&T 4G LTE. For just a dollar under $200, this doesn’t sound like a bad deal. Be sure to hit up our hands-on to learn more about the phone.

States Legalizing Marijuana Will Violate Federal Law, Trigger Constitutional Showdown: DEA, Drug Czars

On a Monday teleconference call, former Drug Enforcement Agency administrators and directors of the Office of National Drug Control Policy voiced a strong reminder to the U.S. Department of Justice that even if voters in Colorado, Oregon and Washington pass ballot measures to legalize marijuana use for adults and tax its sale, the legalization of marijuana still violates federal law and the passage of these measures could trigger a “Constitutional showdown.”

The goal of the call was clearly to put more pressure on Attorney General Eric Holder to make a public statement in opposition to these measures. With less than 30 days before Election Day, the DOJ has yet to announce its enforcement intentions regarding the ballot measures that, if passed, could end marijuana prohibition in each state.

“Next month in Colorado, Oregon and Washington states, voters will vote on legalizing marijuana,” Peter Bensinger, the moderater of the call and former administrator of DEA during Ford, Carter and Reagan administrations, began the call. “Federal law, the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court decisions say that this cannot be done because federal law preempts state law.”

Halo 4 pirates feel the wrath of Microsoft’s banhammer

Halo 4 will definitely be one of the biggest games of the year, so it really isn’t much of a surprise that some Xbox 360 owners are eager to download a pirated version of the game that popped up on torrent sites over the weekend. Microsoft isn’t taking this leak lightly though, as MCV reports that the company is handing out permanent Xbox Live bans to anyone caught playing the game with their console connected to the Internet. In other words, you might want to think twice before taking advantage of those Halo 4 torrents.

Of course, pirated versions of Halo 4 will only work on modded Xbox 360s, and why anyone would take their modded console onto Xbox Live is entirely beyond us. Some particularly dumb 360 owners are doing just that, though, as evidenced by the email MCV posted. The email is from the Live Enforcement Team, and lets the user know that they’ve violated the Xbox Live Code of Conduct. The punishment? Permaban, baby.

Though the email states that users won’t be able to log into Xbox Live during their suspension (which is never-ending in this case), it’s a little unclear at the moment if Microsoft is banning consoles or just gamertags – two very different things. If Microsoft is banning consoles, that means the console will never be able to access Xbox Live again, effectively bricking it as far as multiplayer and Xbox Live Arcade are concerned. If Microsoft is only banning gamertags, then the infringing gamer could just create a new tag and go online with that, which is a far less severe punishment.

In any case, you’re in for some headaches if you’re caught playing Halo 4 ahead of release while your 360 is connected to Live. Microsoft has launched an investigation to find out who leaked Halo 4 ahead of release, but in the meantime, the company is showing us that it has no problem at all with dropping the banhammer left and right. We’re going to go ahead and suggest that you just wait for Halo 4‘s official release on November 6 – yes, its release is still a few weeks off, but we’re thinking that waiting three weeks is much better than having your Xbox Live privileges taken away.

US Drops Gaza Scholarships After Israel Travel Ban

JERUSALEM — Amal Ashour, 18, loves Shakespeare and American pop music. One of the brightest students in the Gaza Strip, she studied her senior year of high school in Minnesota through a U.S.-government funded program.

She had planned to study English literature this fall at a university in the West Bank through another U.S.-sponsored program, but just a month before school started, she was informed the scholarship was no longer available.

Kate Gosselin’s Earnings Revealed in New Book

When Kate Gosselin found out that her reality show had been canceled back in November 2011, she told me money was the first thing that came to mind. Kate vowed to do whatever necessary to provide for her eight children, and insisted the amount of money she was rumored to have made was not accurate. However, a newly released book claims Kate earned at least $2,499,000 from her reality show, “Jon & Kate Plus 8.”

“I read what we apparently make and it’s hysterical. That would be a dream come true times two million. So it’s certainly way less than people think. We are not set for life,” Kate said in 2011. “You know, I need to work as soon as possible — as in yesterday.”

Now, the author of a controversial new book, “Kate Gosselin: How She Fooled The World,” claims to have detailed accounts of exactly how much Kate made for each of the first five seasons her show aired on TLC.

When The Boss Has Cancer

David B. Fischer advanced to chief executive of Greif Inc. GEF +0.21% last November, a decade after he contracted a form of melanoma that usually kills within five years.

Mr. Fischer disclosed he was a recent cancer survivor with a poor prognosis before the big industrial-packaging maker offered him a divisional presidency in 2004. The disclosure “showed his forthrightness and honesty,” and helped him get picked, said Chairman Michael Gasser, then CEO of Greif.

Retina MacBook Pro: The Best Worst Laptop I’ve Ever Owned [Apple]

A couple of months ago, I had a life-altering experience: I bought a new iPad. I use the term “life-altering experience” because before that day, I was a staunch opponent of all things Apple. I was a devout Linux and Android devotee, and I only really used Windows because I had to, and because I would never, ever be caught dead using a MacBook. I only bought the iPad because I needed a retina device to use for testing. At least that was my intention. More »

Zeiss Cinemizer head-mounted OLED display wends its way into stores

Zeiss Cinemizer headmounted OLED display wends its way into retailers

Zeiss must be doing well in the lens business, as it hasn’t exactly been in a rush to get its Cinemizer OLED on to shelves. Still, we’re happy to say that the head-mounted display is at last slipping into retailers: Amazon partners are now carrying the regular 870 x 500 version for $749 in the US (German titling aside) and £578 in the UK. It doesn’t look to be the version with head tracking that we tried earlier this year, but you’ll still get a 3D image through HDMI 1.4 in addition to 2D through either the HDMI link or analog input. The price makes it a tempting alternative to the more advanced but costlier Sony HMZ-T2 — and for those who’d like something slightly more discreet-looking while they zone out with a good movie.
