Josh Mandel Says He Would Have Opposed Auto Bailout During Ohio Senate Debate

Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel, the Republican nominee for Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat, said during a debate Monday afternoon that he would have voted against the auto bailout package.

Mandel, who is challenging Sen. Sherrod Brown (D), told an audience at the City Club of Cleveland that he would have opposed the 2009 package passed by President Obama and Congress, saying that the package hurt pensions for workers at the Delphi plants and other plants in the state. Mandel has long discussed the Delphi pension issue when questioned on the auto bailout, but he has not taken a specific stand on the bailout until Monday’s debate.

“I would not have voted for that,” Mandel said of the bailout.

Russia Local Elections: Putin Loyalists Win Elections, Observers Say Vote Rigged

MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin’s loyalists swept to victory in most local election races held across Russia, preliminary results showed Monday, while independent observers said the vote was openly rigged. The independent monitoring organization Golos estimated that as many as half of the votes for the Kremlin party in one Siberian city may have been falsified.

The Central Election Commission’s results showed Kremlin-backed candidates and incumbent governors won all five gubernatorial races held Sunday. The Kremlin party, United Russia, also dominated mayoral races and those for local legislatures held in 77 of Russia’s 83 regions.

LG Optimus G for AT&T will be available November 2 for $200, pre-orders begin tomorrow

AT&T LG Optimus G to be available November 2 for $200

The details have finally come: the LG Optimus G on AT&T will be coming to stores beginning November 2nd, and will go for $199.99 after a two-year commitment. Eager early adopters, however, will be able to head over to the carrier’s website to pre-order the device. Let’s recap what you’re getting for your hard-earned money: a 4.7-inch 1,280 x 768 True HD IPS PLUS display, Android 4.0, a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4, 8MP camera (rather than the 13MP module on the global and Sprint models), 2GB RAM and dual-band AT&T LTE. We have a feeling it will be joined in close succession by several other hard-hitting smartphone giants, which means you may have to modify your holiday wish list pretty heavily over the next few weeks.

Whoa, Water Drops Floating on Top of Water Makes No Sense but It’s Awesome [Video]

In the comics, the Flash can vibrate his body so fast that he can walk through walls. With water, though, vibration can keep water droplets from being absorbed into a larger surface of water. Instead of coalescing into the larger body, they just gather on top as long as the surface is kept vibrating. It’s amazing to see, and when you stop to think about what you’re looking at, it doesn’t seem to make an ounce of sense—except obviously it does. Science! [YouTube] More »

With the launch of Xbox Music, Zune is truly no more (update: Zune Pass users get 1,000 Microsoft point parting gift)

With the launch of Xbox Music, Zune is truly no more

It’s over, folks. Or at least nearly over. Write it down — time of death: 12:01AM ET, October 16. That’s when the Zune brand is officially no more, and “Xbox Music/Video” and its store replace the Zune Marketplace; the final, quiet end of a brand that’s been waning for years. “Yes, the Zune brand is gone, and the Zune products are gone,” Xbox Music GM Jerry Johnson told us in a meeting last week. While Zune devices will still work with Windows 7, and the Zune Pass simply becomes the Xbox Music Pass, the brand is effectively no more, joining the Kin and Microsoft Bob in the annals of MS history.

Bizarrely, the branding will continue on for Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 users, with the Zune Marketplace mirroring Xbox Music’s content. That’s likely due to Xbox Music being exclusive to Windows 8 devices (which includes the Xbox 360, despite its age, and Windows Phone 8) — Microsoft promises a continued focus on Xbox Music going forward, while Zune support drops out. In the end, though Zune was a failure for Microsoft, Johnson said it was a worthwhile learning experience for the company. “The Zune brand got associated with a device, and what we did with Xbox Music is actually turn around and say, ‘Let’s build something from the ground up, leveraging what we’ve learned from a lot of these different things.’ But it’s not gonna be device-centric, it’s gonna be service-centric,” he explained.

In Johnson’s eyes, the failure of Zune as a brand is directly tied to the failure of Zune as a device — and having the highly successful Xbox brand tied to its media offerings, he’s hoping to skirt previous negative perceptions and relaunch Microsoft’s place in media delivery. Whether that’ll happen remains to be seen, but either way, this is the final nail in the Zune’s coffin — not just as a device, but as a thing in the world.

Update: Looks like Microsoft hasn’t forgotten the loyalty of the diehards who stayed with Zune until the end, as Zune Music Pass users are getting 1,000 Microsoft Points for free along with the switch to Xbox Music.

LG Nexus 4 photo samples leaked onto Google+

We’ve certainly heard a lot of rumblings when it comes to Google’s upcoming Nexus device. It’s about that time of the year when the company usually outs a new product, so it’s really no surprise that Nexus rumors are flying around. The latest leak comes from a couple of Google and LG employees themselves who ended up posting photo samples from a mysterious device onto Google+.

Google employee Jason Parks and Bae Sang-Hoon of LG’s Pyeongtaek Learning Center both posted image samples onto their respective Google+ pages, which have since been taken down on both pages, but that didn’t stop people from taking some screenshots and saving the photos themselves — EXIF data and all — before they were taken down.

According to EXIF data, listed under “Camera” is the “Nexus 4,” which we take will be an upcoming Nexus phone that apparently is already manufactured and being tested as we speak. We’re not sure if the phone will actually be called the Nexus 4, or if it’s just a working name or codename. Either way, we know a new Nexus is coming extremely soon.

This also isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the “Nexus 4.” The phone showed up in the Carphone Warehouse’s inventory system a few days ago, and then we heard about a rumored launch date of October 29 on the same day. Whether or not we’ll see the phone that soon is yet to be known, but it will surely be soon.

Four-Wheeler + Jetski = Quadski

I think like most people who grew up watching James Bond hoon that white Lotus Esprit around Greece and then drive it directly into and out of the ocean where it became a submarine, I’ve always wanted an amphibious vehicle. You still can’t buy a Lotus that transforms into a submarine, but pretty soon you’ll be able to purchase the Quadski.

qs 1

The Quadski is an amphibious vehicle designed to carry one person that can transform from a four-wheeler to a jet ski-like vehicle in 5 seconds at the press of a button. The vehicle is capable of traveling at 45 mph both on land and in the water. When on land the four wheels allow the driver to cruise on just about any terrain out there.

qs 2

The vehicle can be driven directly into the water from the land. With the press of a button, its wheels move up and out of the way, completing the transformation into a water vehicle.  Power for the vehicle comes from a BMW four-cylinder engine.

qs 3

The two biggest problems I see with the Quadski are the fact that it only holds one person and the MSRP is expected to be about $40,000 (USD)… and it still doesn’t turn into a submarine.
