Sony patents Move controller that will heat up or cool down during gameplay

Most, if not all, gaming controllers come with feedback mechanisms that cause it to vibrate during gameplay. This could occur when you are being shot, or when you are firing shots thus simulating the effects of recoil, albeit extremely minor ones. Well it looks like Sony might be interested in taking that to the next level and in a patent filed, it has been suggested that Sony is looking into a feature for the Move controller in which the controller will actually start to warm-up when your weapon in the game overheats, and once the controller cools down, it is basically a signal to the player that the weapon is good for use again.

It has also been suggested that the controller can be used to locate objects within the game, heating up when you get closer, and cooling down when you move further away. The patent also describes that the controller will feature a “biometric sensor” that will cool the controller down when a “decrease in galvanic skin resistance” has been detected – basically when the controller detects that your hands have gotten too sweaty, it will begin to cool down. Sounds quite novel but interesting – what do you guys think?

Cross-Link confirmed for PS Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken

If you’re planning on picking up Street Fighter X Tekken for your PlayStation Vita, you might be pleased to learn that it has been confirmed that the Vita version of the game will feature Cross-Link. For those unaware, Cross-Link is a feature that lets you use the PS Vita as a controller for the console version of the game. This is of course assuming that you own both the PlayStation 3 version and the Vita version of the game in the first place. This might be handy for those who wish to play the game while on the go, and at home but don’t want to have to switch controllers due to the different feel of the Vita’s controls versus the regular PlayStation 3’s game pad. The Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken will be available come 23rd of October, a date that some of you guys might want to mark down on your calendars.

Research suggests that web usage from iPhone 5s are greater than Samsung Galaxy S3s

While there are dozens of Android phones out there, when it comes to devices that are pitted against the iPhone 5, it is none other than Samsung’s own flagship handset, the Samsung Galaxy S3. Well in an effort to compare both smartphones, ad network Chitika’s research arm, Chitika Insights, has analyzed the web usage rates of both devices between the 3rd of October to the 9th of October. What they have discovered is that despite the Samsung Galaxy S3 being on the US market longer than the iPhone 5 (four months versus 3 weeks), the iPhone 5 appeared to represent a larger portion of web traffic.

The report states that this is largely due to the iPhone 5’s high adoption rate, selling a record-breaking 5 million units in its first weekend of availability. The report also goes on to speculate that the reason in the increase of web usage could also be due to the inclusion of 4G LTE, a feature which they claim leads to faster and more enjoyable web browsing. According to the report, “While optimizing online content for both devices is still the smart move for businesses targeting mobile consumers, this comparison emphasizes iPhone users still being the most active – and hence marketable – users of the mobile Web.”

AAXA P300 pico projector comes with superior specifications

When we talk about pico projectors, this particular niche market seems to be having trouble of breaking into mainstream consciousness. The thing is, how many of us actually need to make presentations to a small group of people in a room at a whim? If that is the case, carrying a pico projector makes sense, but a tablet would also be able to serve its purpose – albeit less effectively than having information on your presentation projected onto the wall or a viewable surface. The thing is, pico projectors lack the brightness level and battery life to last the distance, and the AAXA P300 pico projector intends to address at least one of the issues mentioned.

For starters, the AAXA P300 pico projector will feature a 300 lumens brightness which places it at the higher echelon for its device segment, not to mention carrying the ability to throw out images and videos at a far higher resolution count that most of the other pico projectors. I am referring to a 720p resolution, although its 75 minute battery life does leave plenty to be desired despite being in line of expectations for a pico projector. Still, it can be said to be an achievement considering how the brightness level has increased.

At point of publishing, the AAXA P300 from AAXA Technologies is deemed to be the “world’s brightest battery-powered pico projector” – anyone out there willing to dispute this statement? Share your thoughts in the comments below. What about the hardware specifications crammed into the AAXA P300? Well, it will come with a revolutionary new pico optical engine that does 300 peak lumens at a high definition (HD) resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, running on Texas Instruments’ DLP Technology.

Not only that, the Vibrant Color LED technology which is used to deliver dazzling color quality also touts an operating life of over 15,000 hours, where is said to be able to generate a viewing experience of up to 120”. A robust ARM processor runs underneath the hood, allowing it to handle high resolution 720p video, picture, and picture slide-show playback. We would advise you to hook this up to a power supply if you intend to watch movies with it, in addition to connecting a decent sound system since the dual 1-watt speakers would not be able to fill up a room with tub-thumping audio. So, any takers?

How Quantum Mechanics Was Born From the Need For a Better Lightbulb [Video]

Some of mankind’s most remarkable scientific discoveries came to light as a result of research that had nothing to do with the breakthrough itself. And such was the case with quantum mechanics. Back in the early 1890s the German Bureau of Standards asked Max Planck to design a lightbulb that produced the maximum amount of light with the minimal amount of energy. And his research into saving the bureau a few dollars on its energy bills led to the study of quantum mechanics which could one day let us unlock the secrets of the universe. More »

Felix Baumgarter breaks YouTube record as 8 million viewers watch his space jump (video)

Felix Baumgarter breaks YouTube record as 8 million viewers watch his space jump

Felix Baumgartner might not have broken Joe Kittinger’s world record for the longest time spent in freefall, but he did smash a fourth milestone during his dive. In addition to records for the highest ever jump, longest distance fall and fastest downward speed, the stunt was watched by eight million YouTubers at the same time. While the site hasn’t divulged exact stats, that figure is apparently higher than those who watched President Obama’s inauguration. That said, if you weren’t one of the eight million, you can head on past the break to watch the highlights reel — unless you’re already bored of watching a man fall, unaided, you know, from space.

Nintendo Wii under $130 in holiday price slash

Nintendo has slashed the priced of the Wii ahead of the holiday shopping season, bringing the motion-tracking console down to under $130 to keep sales ticking until the Wii U arrives. Now down to $129.99 complete with two classic games, the black version of the console is offered with Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort (squeezed onto a single disc, no less).

The new bundle will replace the existing black Wii package, currently offered with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and help fill the entry-level segment while the new Wii U takes on the more premium end of the market. That new console, complete with its tablet-style GamePad, will hit the US on November 18, priced from $299.99.

Nintendo’s Wii may be old, but its had impressive sales and managed to kick-start a new segment of motion-tracking gaming. That went on to inspire systems from Microsoft, with Kinect for the Xbox 360, and Sony’s PlayStation Move for the PS3.

The new black Wii package will be broadly available by October 28 across the US. No word on international launch plans at this stage.
