T-Mobile/MetroPCS merger expected to be completed by June 2013

As some of you guys are aware, both T-Mobile and MetroPCS have agreed to a merger, and assuming Sprint does not attempt to outbid T-Mobile, it seems that both parties have revealed a tentative date in which the deal is expected to be complete. In spite of the rumors that Sprint might be looking to crash the party, T-Mobile and MetroPCS have pegged June 2013 as the date they expect the deal to finalize. However as is the case with deals of this magnitude, there needs to be approval by regulatory bodies although until then, we expect that both carriers will continue to operate as they are for the moment. Either way this should be interesting for both T-Mobile and MetroPCS subscribers should the deal go through, and in the meantime you can watch the video above where T-Mobile’s CEO gives us the rundown on the merger.

Raspberry Pi Model B gets RAM boost to 512MB, keeps $35 price tag

Raspberry Pi Model B gets RAM boost to 512MB, keeps $35 price tag

So you got your Raspberry Pi all set up, you overclocked it and you even made it run Atari 2600 games. But then, it seems, many of you wrote to the UK-based outfit to complain about the fixed 256MB of RAM. Indeed, the budget mini PC maker says that requests for a memory upgrade have been among “the most common suggestions” it’s received since it launched the device. However, rather than introduce a pricier version, the company has decided to offer 512MB as standard with all future Model Bs (including all current and outstanding orders), while sticking to the original $35 price tag. Good news? Sure, even if your current unit just got relegated to secondary secondary PC status.

Scientists discover the moon is covered in soil containing a water substructure

A group of researchers from the United States has announced that they have discovered the moon is covered with soil containing a water substructure. The water substructure packed soil is created by a constant stream of charged particles coming from the sun according to the researchers. The water substructure that the soil contains is called hydroxyl.

Hydroxyl has one atom of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen making it OH rather than H20. The researchers who made the announcement are from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, the University of Michigan, and the California Institute of Technology. The discovery has led scientists to say that the moon is not is bone dry as many believe.

Observations conducted on the moon previously, and new analysis of lunar samples returned to Earth by the Apollo missions have discovered that icy drops of water can be found on the moon’s surface. In 2009, NASA crashed the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite into a southern lunar crater that is always in shadow at 6200 mph.

The purposeful crash of the satellite was the equivalent of detonating two tons of dynamite inside the crater and sent a plume of material into the sky. Observations of that ejected plume discovered that the material was rich in water ice. The scientists believe that the stream of subatomic hydrogen proton particles ejected from the sun’s upper atmosphere combined with oxygen on the moon’s surface to form the OH hydroxyls.

“Our work shows that the ‘water’ component, the hydroxyl, is widespread in lunar materials, although not in the form of ice or liquid water that can easily be used in a future manned lunar base,” Michigan geological sciences Professor Youxue Zhang said.

Goodbye, Kindle DX, You Were Too Big For This World

kindle3

The Kindle DX (artist’s rendition shown here), Amazon’s 10-inch offering to the academic set, has been discontinued on the site and is only available from used dealers. Although there has been no official word concerning the DX, the product was reduced from $379 to $299 and the DX is currently out of stock on Amazon.

Amazon designed the 9.7-inch reader as a way to display full pages of content at once and allow readers to see images and text a bit more easily. Launched in 2009, the DX appeared just as readers were thinking about the differences between tablets and e-readers and magazine and newspaper publishers were excited to drop print and move into the ereaders. You’ll recall this is the same period that Hearst media tried and failed to launch the color Skiff e-reader for magazines.

The 6-inch form factor for e-readers seems like the way to go and while I don’t doubt Amazon will release a bigger reader at some point, it seems this heavy, hearty e-reader has gone the way of the great Dinornis novaezelandiae of New Zealand.

Mass Effect 3 to get new Omega DLC next month

If you’re gamer who likes RPGs or shooters, you probably checked out the games in the Mass Effect franchise in the past. These are some the best video games out there for combining shooters with role-playing, all rolled up with a compelling and interesting storyline. One of the best things about the Mass Effect games is that the developers release lots of DLC content to expand the game and keep players interested.

The latest game in the franchise, Mass Effect 3, has already received one DLC update this year, and another is coming. A video was making the rounds late last week that was shot at the New York Comic-Con. The video has reportedly now been taken off-line, but the person in the interview was from BioWare and gave out a few details on the DLC content.

The new download pack is said to be the largest the developers have ever made for the game at nearly twice the size of the previous download content. The DLC content is called Omega and will have players playing as the blue-skinned alien Aria along with a new character. Aria and her cohort will be trying to regain control of the Omega space station.

The original video tipped the release date as being November 27 for the Xbox 360. The content was said to cost 1200 MS Points, or about $14.99. MCV is reporting that the content will be coming on that same date for PC and PS3 owners. I watched the video interview in question late last week and noted no indication of a launch date for PC or PS3 users.

Alleged iPad mini battery photo surfaces, reveals 4,490mAh battery

The iPad mini launch event is scheduled for the 23rd of October – at least that’s what the reports are claiming (formal invitations have yet to be sent). Specs of the device are still unknown, but speculated, and thanks to the folks at Mac Rumors, they have received a set of photos that claim to be the iPad mini’s battery. It’s hard to tell if it’s the real deal, but we guess we can speculate for now. So what sort of battery life are we looking at for the iPad mini? The third-gen iPad features a pretty impressive battery life but will the iPad mini be able to pack that much battery into its smaller frame?

Well according to the labels, the alleged iPad mini battery runs at 3.72 volts and offers 16.7 Whr or energy on a 4,490mAh battery. This places the iPad mini’s battery life between the iPhone 5’s 5.45 Whr and the third-gen iPad’s at a whopping 42.5 Whr. This isn’t too surprising as many had speculated that the iPad mini would resemble the iPad 2 more than the new iPad. Either way with rumors suggesting that it will be WiFi only and without a Retina display, we expect that the 16.7 Whr battery will last you a good while, but we will need to test it out for ourselves before coming to a proper conclusion. Either way hopefully all will be revealed at Apple’s rumored 23rd of October event, so stay tuned!

If you’re interested in picking up the LG Optimus L9 or the HTC Windows Phone 8X via T-Mobile, you might be interested to learn that thanks to what appears to be a leaked road map screenshot for T-Mobile, those interested can expect to see the LG Optimus L9 launch on the 31st of October, while the HTC Windows Phone 8X to launch on the 14th of November. Of course these dates are hardly concrete, and it’s hard to tell if this screenshot is legit so we suggest taking it with a grain of salt for now, but we will be keeping our eyes peeled and mark our calendars for those dates nonetheless.

If either phone does not capture your fancy, you might be interested to learn that based on the screenshot, a bevy of other devices will be released in this month and the next. This includes the Blackberry Armstrong for the 24th of October, the Samsung Galaxy S2 color refresh for the 29th of October, an unknown Huawei device on the 31st of October, a Samsung Tobia for the 7th of November, and a certain Dell BMW Launch (TmoNews speculates that this could be a Windows 8 laptop) for the 14th of November.

Hacker pleads guilty to Sony Pictures breach

Back in June, a massive hack was conducted on the Sony Pictures Website. The attack led to the theft of details on over 1 million accounts and was linked to the hacker group Lulzsec. At the time, the hacker group claimed to have used a “very simple SQL injection” attack. Samples of the compromised data were later posted online.

Out of the details stolen 39,000 e-mail address and password combinations were posted. The hackers also posted e-mail, password, home addresses, and dates of birth on 12,500 different users. Sony Pictures and the authorities began an investigation into the hack, and eventually an Arizona man was arrested and charged with the crime.

The arrested hacker was 20-year-old Raynaldo Rivera. Rivera was taken into custody in August and made a plea agreement with authorities where he admitted to hacking the Sony Pictures website and stealing personal information of thousands of individuals. The Hacker says that in May of 2011, use a third-party service to mask his IP address and then hit the Sony Pictures website with commands to exploit security vulnerabilities in the website servers.

The information that the hacker stole resulted in over $605,000 in financial losses. Part of the plea agreement will see Riviera paying restitution to the victims of the crime and facing prison time. The hacker is facing a maximum of five years in prison, and the fine will be at least $250,000.
