Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 announced

Another day, another keyboard, and here we are with yet another model from Swiss hardware maestros Logitech – the Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810. Just what kind of value will this keyboard be able to offer? For starters, since it connects via Bluetooth, the Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 will play nice with Windows, iOS and Android devices, while hoping those on non-Windows platforms might be persuaded to jump aboard thanks to its layout that has been specially designed for Windows 8. It can pair up to a trio of devices simultaneously, letting you switch among (for example) your PC, tablet and smartphone at the push of a button without any hassle.

Taking its design cues from the rest of the consumer electronics industry where “slim is in”, the Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 will come in a thin form factor, sporting actual brushed aluminum and sleek lines. It even comes with auto-adjusting illumination so that you can work even in low light conditions as its laser-etched key characters will remain bright and easy to read at all times. Proximity detection has been thrown into the mix, where it will turn on the lighting whenever your hands approach it, dimming or brightening up automatically according to the light level in the room.

It is said to deliver 10 days of battery life on a full charge, but of course, we do not mind putting it to the test and see whether it lives up to such claims. The Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 is tipped to arrive in the US as well as across the pond this month and the next, respectively, for $99.99 a pop. [Press Release]

Logitech’s K810 keyboard pairs with up to three devices, has a button for switching apps in Windows 8

Logitech's K810 Illuminated Keyboard can pair with up to three devices at once, has a button for switching apps in Windows 8

It was last week that Logitech announced two mice and a trackpad, all optimized for Windows 8. As it turns out, the outfit wasn’t quite finished unveiling its Win 8 lineup: the company just outed the Illuminated Bluetooth Keyboard K810, which has a hotkey for toggling between open programs. It also features Easy Switch, a technology first introduced on the K760 that allows the device to pair with up to three Bluetooth-enabled devices at once, regardless of the OS. As for the switching bit, each paired device gets assigned to one of three function keys; just press the button to start using the keyboard with that device. In theory, then, you could have the same keyboard hooked up to your PC, tablet and phone, and be able to type on all of them from minute to minute, though that admittedly seems like an unlikely scenario.

As the product name would suggest, the keys have a backlight glowing from underneath. The lighting will automatically turn off if you haven’t been using the keyboard for a certain period of time, but thanks to proximity sensors they’ll kick in again when the keyboard detects your hands hovering close by. Lastly, the keyboard has a rechargeable battery rated for a month of runtime, though given the fact that it charges over USB, we can see some people bypassing the wireless connection entirely and leaving it plugged in. The K810 will sell for $100. Look for it to hit US stores in October, with European availability following a month later. In the meantime, we’ve got some hands-on shots below. (Psst… the Fn key is where the app-toggling button will be on final models.)

Amazon Kindle DX has left the building

You can more or less say that the Amazon Kindle DX is a dying breed, considering this device is no longer listed as in stock by its retailer Amazon, where it is available only to those who do not mind purchasing a tablet that is listed under the “used device” category. Heck, that means we will not be able to check out the refurbished units anymore. Perhaps the discontinuation of the Kindle DX is something natural, considering how the e-reader was introduced to the masses in 2009 – where 3 years is a long time in the world of consumer electronics. Sure, it received and update in the year that followed, but was more or less pushed to the sidelines since then. A price cut for the Amazon Kindle DX was introduced just a few weeks ago, and that’s that – it has been a decent run basically, but there is no room for sentiment when it comes to technology.

The Amazon Kindle DX does hold the distinction of being Amazon’s first large-screen model with a 9.7” display, and Amazon had hopes for the Kindle DX to end up in the hands of students worldwide as a textbook platform, where efforts to spearhead that vision included having several major US universities run pilot programs that saw the use of the Kindle DX in classrooms. Still, it did not take off as expected, so here we are at the end of the road. Still, Amazon has their fingers dipped in the tablet/e-reader market with their recent slew of Kindle releases like the Kindle Fire HD amongst others.

Toshiba Excite 10SE/AT300SE arrives at the FCC with Jelly Bean possibility

Will your new tablet come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or not right out of the box? That remains to be seen, depending on the hardware manufacturer as well as their team who have tailored the inner workings of the tablet. Well, there is a chance that the upcoming Toshiba Excite 10SE/AT300SE tablet might just arrive with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in tow, although that has yet to be confirmed just yet. Having received clearance from the FCC recently, in addition to the Bluetooth SIG pointing towards the moniker of “Excite 10SE” for folks living in North America.

What you see above is the European version of the Wi-Fi model, where an AT300SE was spotted in GLBenchmark’s performance charts, touting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice – something that is yet not available to current Excite models, in addition to what looks set to be a 1,280 x 800 display and a 1.3GHz Tegra 3 processor. Halo 4 leaks, Microsoft targets pirates

The digital version of the seven seas is fraught with its fair share of pirates, and this time around Microsoft is setting their crosshairs on those who have leaked out copies of the upcoming blockbuster console title, Halo 4 for the Xbox 360 which will be an exclusive release later this year. Leaked nearly a month ahead of its official release, the images which surfaced at the end of last week on Reddit proved to be the real deal, and a fair share of gameplay videos have also snaked their way to the Internet over the weekend. To make matters worse, a full retail copy of the game has also been found on torrent sites, but 343 Industries, the company behind Halo 4, is not feeling too hot and bothered by explaining their policy concerning those who played the pirated copy of Halo 4.

Microsoft issued a statement through a representative of theirs, “We have seen the reports of Halo 4 content being propped on the Web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation.”

Word on the grapevine has it that Microsoft did act swiftly and decisively when removing the unauthorized content from their known online repositories. Those caught playing the leaked copy of Halo 4 would result in a permanent Xbox 360 console ban in addition to removing all Xbox Live account privileges as playing a pirated copy (rightfully) constitutes a breach of the terms of use and code of conduct for the online service. Best to wait for just three more weeks for the official Halo 4 release, no?

Archos Arnova FamilyPad detailed further

A couple of months ago, we spotted the Archos Arnova FamilyPad hitting the FCC and passing the tests with flying colors, meaning it is more than ready to meet the demands of the mass market – in due time. Well, it seems that additional details of this well endowed tablet has just been spotted at Archos Slovenia, where we will have a better idea on just what kind of performance the 13.3” Android-powered tablet is able to deliver. The Archos Arnova FamilyPad is definitely not a speed demon though, as it has a relatively slow 1GHz Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 processor, but on the other hand, at least this means it will not be that expensive.

The 13.3” display will carry a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, sporting 10-point capacitive multitouch support, running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (hopefully a Jelly Bean update is in the works somewhere), accompanied by 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal memory, a 2-megapixel shooter at the back and in front, stereo speakers, an integrated microphone, and a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes. The Archos Arnova FamilyPad does come with a built-in stand so that you can prop it up to watch videos and have a hands-free viewing experience, so do look out for its official launch in a month or two.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Alpha has multi-window support

The smartphone has gotten more and more powerful these days, so it goes without saying that sometimes, the function of it does seem to imitate that of the computer, and user interface elements do make the cross from one end to the other. NTT DoCoMo’s variant of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is known as the Samsung Galaxy S3 Alpha, where it shares the high-end processor specifications of the Galaxy Note 2 as well as amount of memory, in addition to multi-window support. Some might call it the split screen feature, but you know what the Bard said, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.

Nice to know that the Samsung Galaxy S3 Alpha did not come gimped with the missing multi-window support feature, unlike earlier reports concerning the Galaxy Note 2. Do you think that multi-window support would make your smartphone experience a whole lot more productive than normal?

Scientific First: Turtles That Pee From Their Mouths

Chinese soft-shelled turtleBiologists from the University of Singapore
have discovered that a certain Chinese soft-shelled turtle, well-adapted
to living at the bottom of brackish (salty) muddy swamps, coming to the
surface to breathe the air, would immerse their heads in puddles when
their swamps dry up.  To you and I, such an observation might not cause
even the slightest curiosity, but to Y. K. Ip and his team, it was curiosity that led them to discover a truly unique animal – a turtle that pees through its mouth.
