CONCORD, N.C. — Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s replacement made an early exit Saturday night in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Regan Smith, filling in for the concussed Earnhardt for at least two races, went to the garage with a blown engine early in the race.
Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson is coming back to S.H.I.E.L.D. Despite meeting a tragic end in “Marvel’s The Avengers,” the beloved and by-the-book agent will apparently make an appearance in “Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D.,” the new television series produced by Joss Whedon.
“We all love Clark Gregg, there’s no doubt about that,” Whedon said via taped message to attendees at New York Comic-Con on Saturday. “From before we made ‘The Avengers,’ we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death.”
Confirmed Marvel chief Kevin Feige, “There was never going to be a ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show without Agent Phil Coulson!”

NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez has returned to the Yankees’ starting lineup for their AL championship series opener against Detroit on Saturday night but has been dropped to sixth in the batting order.
According to STATS LLC, the 37-year-old third baseman has not hit that low in the order since Joe Torre batted him eighth in the fourth and final game of the 2006 AL division series against the Tigers. He went 0 for 3.
