Heriberto Lazcano Dead: U.S. Identified Mexico Drug Lord Before Body Was Snatched

BY MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN, The Associated Press

MEXICO CITY — U.S. officials say the U.S. knew that Mexican marines had killed the head of the widely feared Zetas drug cartel before the body was stolen in a pre-dawn raid from a Mexican funeral home.

One official says the U.S. independently verified the identity of Zeta founder and leader Heriberto Lazcano, killed in a shootout Sunday afternoon in a northern Mexican town, before his body was stolen at gunpoint early Monday.

Study: Europeans Quickest To Adopt iOS 6, Overall Updates Growth Continues

ios-6

We’ve got some new and interesting numbers to share about iOS 6 adoption three weeks after launch, from a couple of different sources, both of which show users continue to update to the new mobile OS from Apple. There are also some interesting differences depending on region, with some countries lagging far behind the U.S. in terms of adoption and some surging far ahead.

First, from Chitika, the news that iOS 6 adoption has climbed to just a hair shy of 68 percent on iPhone devices, based on a snapshot taken October 10 of the traffic coming through millions of ad impressions on Chitika’s network. The iPad is at 51 percent running iOS 6, passing the tipping point of more than half of all users, and the iPod rose to just over 42 percent. Chitika thinks that part of the reason behind the differences might be the overabundance of older devices still in use in the iPod segment that can’t upgrade to iOS 6, whereas all but first-generation iPads are currently compatible, and iPhones enjoy a quicker turnover cycle with consumers thanks to carrier upgrade incentives. Overall, iOS 6 adoption sits at 58.88 percent, according to Chitika’s data.

The numbers from Chartboost paint a slightly different picture. Overall, they see iOS 6 adoption sitting at just under 50 percent. That’s still an improvement from when it showed growth nearly stalling last week, but considerably under Chitika’s picture. But both continue to show an upwards trend.

In addition to looking at overall OS version adoption, Chartboost also broke down country-by-country uptake, and that showed some interesting variances depending on where users are in the world. Top iOS 6-adopting nations include Italy (65 percent), Germany (62.3 percent), the Netherlands (60.6 percent) and the UK (57.6 percent). On the other end of the spectrum, China is among the lowest adopting countries, with just 24.5 percent on iOS 6. You can see a number of other nations in the chart below.

One more chart from Chitika below shows how various countries stack up relative to the U.S. The geographical iOS 6 adoption breakdown provides an interesting look at where users are more eager to be on the latest version, but other factors like device distribution and access to reliable Wi-Fi connections could be at play.

Anne Hathaway’s ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Role Slotted In Best Actress Category

Anne Hathaway won’t compete with herself this awards season. As first reported by In Contention, a HitFix blog that covers the Academy Awards, Warner Bros. has decided to run Hathaway in the Best Actress category for her role in “The Dark Knight Rises.” The move leaves Hathaway’s buzzed-about turn in “Les Miserables” as her sole chance for Best Supporting Actress.

The decision is surprising, if only because many considered Hathaway’s performance as Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises” the film’s best chance at a supporting acting nomination.

“If there is going to be one, it will most likely be [Hathaway],” wrote prominent Oscar blogger Sasha Stone in response to a HuffPost Entertainment piece speculating on “Dark Knight Rises” acting nomination possibilities. “True, everyone thinks ‘Les Miz’ will be her big Oscar grab, and it probably will be but — that doesn’t take away the fact that she’s still the film’s best shot at an acting nod.”

This Reversible Table Is Perfect For Tiny Apartments [Video]

If you live in a smallish apartment like I do, you probably don’t have a dinner table. You probably don’t need one often—definitely not often enough to justify using the space required to store one—but sitting on the couch, hunched over the coffee table just doesn’t feel right for some meals. What if you had a reversible table? Soon you can. More »

When Does A TV Get Too Big?

I love my televisions. One of them, a 55-inch set, sits in my living room, ready and willing to deliver all kinds of entertainment. Another set, a 42-inch model, is running in my bedroom for those times when I want to relax and catch up on some shows on my TiVo.

Recently, when I was watching a movie on the aforementioned 55-inch set in my living room, I got to thinking about screen size. On numerous occasions, people have come into my house, looked at the screen, and made some sort of laudatory statement about how “big” my television was. To them, the size, and not the fact that the set is extremely thin and delivers outstanding picture quality, was most impressive.

Realizing that, I decided to head down to Best Buy to examine people’s actions in the store. Much to my surprise, the vast majority of folks centered their attention on a precious few televisions that lacked overall quality, but were much larger than their upper-end counterparts. I was also surprised to see that the aisle with smaller televisions was largely ignored by customers.

All of that has made me wonder whether screen size matters too much to us. According to NPD DisplaySearch, the average screen size of today’s televisions is 36.8 inches. That’s up two inches in just the last year alone.

In a discussion on the topic recently, NPD DisplaySearch senior vice president Paul Semenza said that for today’s customers, “its about, how big of a set can I get into my room?” That mentality has come to the detriment of overall quality.

“People are buying the biggest TV they can fit through the door”

So, why does size matter so much? I know I own above-average televisions in terms of screen size, but I have the rooms to accommodate them. According to Semenza, people are simply buying the biggest television they can fit through the door. Sometimes, those big sets fit into a space. In other cases, they just don’t.

Those who buy televisions and research them typically come across tips from sites like this that tell them how big a screen should be for a certain room. Typically, the golden rule is to get a screen size based on where the viewers will be sitting, not how big a room is. The closer you sit to the set, the smaller the screen should be.

But how many of us actually listen to such advice? Judging by the data, and my own admittedly non-scientific research, it appears we throw logic out the window when buying a television. To us, the bigger the screen, the better.

Of course, TV makers love that about us. Televisions with larger screens are more expensive. So, the more people ignore smaller sets for larger ones, the more those companies will make. It’s a great deal.

Perhaps, though, it’s time for us to change. Screen size, while important, is not nearly as integral to the viewing experience as the device’s internal components. Without high-quality visuals, who really cares how big a television screen is, anyway?

Say what you will about television screen size, but I’m going to start advocating smaller sets. Such a move might just benefit us all.

Deutsche Telekom: T-Mobile / MetroPCS merger to be completed by June 2013

Deutsche Telekom MetroPCS merger to be completed by June 2013

Just precisely how the T-Mobile / MetroPCS merger will pan out still seems yet to be decided. What is clear, however, is that majority share-holder, Deutsche Telekom, hope to have the deal done and dusted between April and June next year. CFO for the German giant, Timotheus Hoettges, told Boersenzeitung that we’ll have to wait until the second quarter of 2013 before one of the parties will have to start ordering new stationary and corporate polo shirts. In the meantime he was keen to point out that not all current financial arrangements should feel ause for concern, noting shareholders wouldn’t have their remuneration policy affected by the merger, thanks to the spiffy financial year it’s had.

DIY Calculator Lets You Draw Your Own Keys

For most of us with smartphones, a desktop calculator is a relic of days-gone-by. But I still like the convenience of having one around so I don’t have to bother to dig around for the calculator app on my phone. Here’s a fun idea for a calculator that gives you one more reason to own one – you can design your own buttons for it.

diy calculator 1

The DIY Calculator is just that – a blank slate that you can draw any design you want on. Just get out your pens, pencils, crayons or any other drawing instrument and go to town on the blank sheet of paper on the front of the calculator. I think I’d draw mine with letters instead of numbers, so I’d know exactly how to key in “800813S.”

diy calculator 2

You’ll still have to put the buttons in the right spot for them to work – but at least they include a template that ensures you don’t end up mixing up your division and multiplication keys. The DIY Calculator will sell for just £6.99 or $8 USD, and will be available soon from both Mustard and Perpetual Kid.
