Gmail Was Down Briefly On Wednesday, And It Was Hurricane Sandy’s Fault

Two days after making landfall, Hurricane Sandy is still causing consternation — this time, among Gmail users nationwide. The ripple effect the storm has had on communication services briefly took down several popular Google products — including Gmail, Google Chat, Google Hangout, Google Drive and Google Reader — on Wednesday evening for users from New York to Los Angeles.

“We believe about 10% of our users experienced difficulties reaching Google for six minutes this afternoon,” the company said in an official statement. “We apologize to everyone affected and have worked hard to get our services back to normal as quickly as possible.”

What the official statement doesn’t say is that Google customer service representatives are telling those who call that some users were briefly unable to access Gmail and other services around 6 p.m. ET because their Internet connections were being routed through computers in the New York area, the Huffington Post has learned. Google told concerned customers that hiccups could happen again during the next few days, but the company is working to prevent it.

James Harden, Rockets Beat Pistons 105-96

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — James Harden had 37 points and 12 assists in a stirring debut for Houston, and Carlos Delfino made four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to lift the Rockets to a 105-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

Detroit led 83-72 early in the fourth, but Harden and Delfino brought the Rockets back. Houston acquired Harden on Saturday night in a trade with Oklahoma City and agreed Wednesday on a five-year, $80 million contract extension with him.

Cell Phones, Internet After Hurricane Sandy: What You Need To Know

Residents along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard are struggling with voice and data services in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which has killed dozens and ravaged communication, transportation and utility infrastructure in the Northeast. Damages from the storm are estimated in the tens of billions. Millions on the Eastern Seaboard were left without power, cable or landline service in their homes, as well as spotty or non-existent mobile reception.

How could this happen when telecommunications companies had prepared for Sandy’s fury ahead of the storm’s landfall? Verizon and AT&T told the Associated Press earlier this week that preparations for the superstorm included “topping up fuel for backup generators and lining up disaster recovery trailers to move into flooded areas after the storm passes,” in addition to readying backup generators for cell towers. Despite precautions, strong winds knocked over power lines and took out cell towers in the hardest-hit regions, while tidal surges seeped into underground facilities where sensitive and critical networking equipment was installed.

Verizon, which provides Internet and telephone services and is the largest wireless carrier in the United States, was hit extremely hard in New York and New Jersey. According to Reuters, flooding from the storm damaged telecom equipment in three of Verizon’s major switching offices, located in lower Manhattan, Queens and Long Island. The failure of these centers completely wiped out non-emergency service in those areas. Network issues persist in the Northeast.

DETROIT — Clues appear to be few: slugs and bullet fragments embedded in cars, metal casings on roadways, a simple black and white sketch of the shooter and vague descriptions of the car he drove.

Investigators searching for a man responsible for shooting at two dozen vehicles along freeway corridors in four counties are up against anonymity and a 100-mile-long crime scene that slices through suburbia, shopping malls and Michigan farm pastures.

iTunes accepting relief donations for Hurricane Sandy victims

Hurricane Sandy, which devastated the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern parts of the U.S., is considered to be the largest recorded Atlantic hurricane in terms of diameter, with winds reaching 1,100 miles. Now Apple is working with the American Red Cross to help thousands of victims affected by the tropical storm. Apple has setup a page in the iTunes Store for people to pledge donations ranging from $5 to $200, as shown in the image above. You can check it out here.

Additionally, Amazon also partnered with the American Red Cross and has also launched a page for relief donations. You can view it here. It’s important to note that this isn’t really the first time for Apple to help. The American Red Cross and Apple also partnered for the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan and for the 2010 Haiti earthquake as well. If you’re willing to help, you can send in your donations now.

Apple’s 2012 annual report shows substantial growth

Apple has filed its 10-K with the SEC, displaying the company’s growth for all to see. The report shows fairly monumental growth on Apple’s part, with the company expanding its research and development (R&D) costs $1 billion, coming in at a total of $3.4 billion for 2012. Retail store numbers, per-store revenue, and workforce numbers have also increased.

Apple’s workforce increased to nearly 73,000 full-time employees, with another 3,300 temporary full-time employees. As of September 29, 42,400 of the employees worked for Apple retail stores. This is a jump from 2011′s overall workforce count of 60,400. Speaking of Apple Retail, 33 new stores were opened in 2012, 28 of which are outside of the U.S, bringing the total number of stores up to 390.

Apple’s retail building space has also grown, jumping to 17.3 million square feet over last year’s 13.2 million. Land ownership has increased to 1,770 acres over last year’s 584 acres, the total of which is in addition to the 2.6 million square feet for its new headquarters. Part of the newly added space is from the new data centers in North Carolina and Oregon.

Finally, there’s revenue, which increased 19-percent to $51.1 million in 2012, a fairly substantial jump over last year’s $43.3 million. Sales in Asia were particularly high, increasing 47-percent to $10.7 billion, most of which is accounted for in iPhone sales.
