iTunes refresh delayed till ‘end of November’

We were all a little shocked when Apple failed to deliver a redesigned iTunes at its last keynote. The company promised a major revamp of the service would land in October yet, here we are with one day left in the month, and no iTunes overhaul in sight. Today Tom Neumayr, a spokesperson for the Cupertino firm, confirmed to AllThingsD that the software release had indeed been pushed back by a month. Only a few short days ago CFO Peter Oppenheimer was touting the refresh during the company’s earnings call saying, “We look forward to looking to launching a redesigned iTunes. The new iTunes has a dramatically simpler and cleaner interface.” But he made no mention of a delay. Neumayr says the goal now is to release the update before the end of November stating that development is “taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right.” While the issue primarily cited in Neumayr’s statement is “seamless integration with iCloud” we wouldn’t be shocked if it’s rumored internet radio service also is playing a role in the delay. Read the complete statement below.

“The new iTunes is taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right. We look forward to releasing this new version of iTunes with its dramatically simpler and cleaner interface, and seamless integration with iCloud before the end of November.”

Pentagon planning to adopt iOS, Android along with BlackBerry

Last week, US Immigrations and Customs made the announcement that they were dropping BlackBerry as their main devices and would be favoring the iPhone. Today, another US department is heading that way as well. The US Department of Defense at the Pentagon has announced that it will be adding iOS and Android devices to its network.

Currently, The Pentagon is planning to hire a contractor that will build a system to manage and secure at over 160,000 iOS and Android devices. According to a document posted last week, the system could be expanded to handle around 8 million devices in total. However, the Pentagon plans to keep its support BlackBerry devices.

Then again, that doesn’t make the situation for RIM any better. Since the Pentagon is adding iOS and Android devices to its network, the chances that Pentagon employees will stick to BlackBerry over iOS and Android is fairly slim. Even though BlackBerry has seen dedication from government organizations over the past few years, that doesn’t mean that it’ll always be that way.

According to the contracting document, the Pentagon wants to give its employees the opportunity to more choices when it comes to using mobile devices at the Pentagon. The Defense Department wants its employees to “take advantage of the increasing wireless capabilities that exist and that are developing in the marketplace.”

N2A Cards Brings Jelly Bean And All Android Apps To B&N’s Nook

n2cards_logo

Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color and Tablet are capable and affordable media tablets, but they run an old and locked-down version of Android. If you are fairly technical, you can obviously use CyanogenMod to bypass B&N’s firmware and install a new version of Android on your device.

If you’re not that technical, though, the easiest way to get Jelly Bean on your Nook tablet is to buy one of N2A Cards’ pre-loaded cards for $29.99 (available online and at Fry’s) or $19.99 to download the software and install it on your own microSD card.

Once you have the card – or have the software installed on your own card – you just plug it into your Nook and the device will automatically boot into a stock Jelly Bean install without ever touching the B&N firmware. Want to go back to the regular Nook experience? Just take out the card and reboot. The advantage of running the N2A Cards install, of course, is that you can run any app, including Amazon’s Kindle app and other e-book apps. These apps are also often cheaper in Google’s official Play Store than on B&N’s own store. N2A Cards co-founder Dave Vinzant told me earlier this week that the project uses CyanogenMod to make its own project work.

Because the Nook boots from the microSD slot before looking for firmware in its built-in memory, this is the easiest way to multi-boot on the Nook. This same trick will also very likely work with the new Nook HD tablets. These will use Ice Cream Sandwich by default, so N2A Cards will also be the easiest way to bring Jelly Bean to them as well.

N2A Cards gives 20 percent of each sale generated from CyanogenMod’s site back to the project and currently makes a $monthly 500 donation to it, too. This donation is about to be increased to $1,000 per month and will increase again as sales increase with the new cards.

Computer Control at Your Fingertips…Literally

Think of the evolution of the mouse & keyboard. First there was the lack of mouse and the directional keys on a keyboard attached to the PC. Then this crazy little thing with the clicks came along – albeit corded. Keyboards too became corded. Then the mouse and keyboard lost their tail and went wireless. Somewhere in there the track pad came on the scene. What’s next? Your finger. And it looks like early 2013 will make it a reality.

Welcome to the Leap, launching in early 2013 for just $69.99. This nifty gadget will revolutionize how you navigate your PC or laptop. Simply plug in the cell phone sized device into a USB port. Using Leap Motion Technology the device creates a 3D interaction space around your computer. It distinguishes thumbs from fingers from hands and uses your motion to maneuver around. Swipe to change pages (remember Tom Cruise in Minority Report?). Or accurately game. Point a pen to sign a document. Zoom-in or zoom-out by pinching. Check the video below to see the Leap in action. How accurate can it be you may ask? It tracks motion down to 1/100th of a millimeter. You will even be able to create custom motions for some of your most used functions. The Leap is compatible with Windows 7 and 8 and Mac OS X and Linux is in development. Pre-orders are being taken now, so cruise over to www.leapmotion.com to get your order in for delivery in just a few months.

Mickey Mouse Owns Darth Vader, Star Wars 7 Coming in 2015

This is still breaking, but massive media conglomerate Disney has bought Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars. Disney bought Pixar in 2006 and Marvel in 2009, so they’re no strangers to massive purchases. However, the worst (or best, if you loved Attack of the Clones) news is that they’re rebooting the Star Wars franchise and making a seventh film to hit theaters in 2015. From the press release:

Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas…  [With] George Lucas serving as creative consultant, Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

The conference call for investors starts at 4:30 EST, so we’ll be getting more details then. The purchase includes notable special effects studio Industrial Light and Magic, which produces special effects for a whole bunch of Hollywood blockbusters. This year, it worked on The Hunger Games and The Avengers. We’ll update more as the whole internet shudders.

Hurricane Sandy Delays Gay Wedding After Couple Travels 3,000 Miles

For Gabrielle Mecham and Ashley Saverino, Hurricane Sandy meant the delay of a wedding that was impossible in their home state.

The women had planned to be married in New York’s Central Park after flying from California, where voters had halted court-sanctioned gay unions. Saverino’s sister was even ordained, which would allow her to preside over the ceremony. The storm meant they were unable to get the required paperwork in New York.

TiVo Premiere fall update starts rolling out with more HD menu screens and a few other tweaks

We got an early peek at some of the newly revamped menus from TiVo’s fall update a few days ago, and now the company has announced it is officially rolling out to retail Premiere DVRs, with cable-provided boxes getting the update at some point in the future. Those on the priority list are first up so some TiVo Community posters report they’ve already received it and can confirm the Netflix app is “still terrible.” Besides the upgraded screens for Season Pass Manager, To Do List, History and My Shows (beyond the new look, they each have gained a few new features), Parental controls has replaced KidZone settings, there are some new games in the apps menu and users can name their DVR in the menus. Hit the source link to check out the full list of changes,

California Democrats Claim They Were Re-Registered As Republicans: Today’s Votes of Incompetence

WASHINGTON — Democratic activists in Riverside County, Calif., claim that a Republican voter outreach project may be illegally registering Democrats as Republicans to boost the GOP’s registration advantage, according to CaliforniaWatch.org, an investigative journalism outfit.

The website reports, “In a complaint filed last week with the county registrar of voters, the Democrats presented affidavits from 133 Democratic voters who said they had been re-registered as Republicans without their consent after they encountered petition circulators outside welfare offices and stores.”

A local Democratic Party spokesman told CaliforniaWatch.org that the registration project’s efforts may aid GOP fundraising efforts (by making local races seem more winnable) and impede Democrats’ ability to turn out their voters. A spokeswoman for the Golden State Voter Participation Project denied the allegations, saying, “Our canvassers are trained about the laws, the rules and how to conduct themselves.”
