Best Buy announces the 9.7-inch Insignia Flex Android tablet

Best Buy announced, via its Insignia Facebook page, the new Insignia Flex Android tablet. Although the specs are modest, the design is something that catches the eye, giving it a unique look in a market full of look-alike tablets. The specifications indicate that this could end up being a nice budget tablet, but no word has been given on pricing yet.

Over the last few weeks, Best Buy has been dropping tease tweets about a “mysterious” product that it would be unveiling in the near future. One such tweet from October 8th, which included a vague image, read, “This picture just might give it away: Can you identify this mystery product that will be in stores next month?” According to the announcement made on Facebook and a tweet over at @Insignia, the aforementioned mystery product was the Flex tablet.

Although information is sparse, we do know this: the Flex tablet will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, has a 1GHz dual-core processor, 9.7-inch screen and a battery life of ten hours. According to the Facebook and Twitter announcements, it will “hit store shelves one month from today,” placing it around November 11th. Given these specs, many speculate that the tablet will be priced between $150 and $250.

While the image provided with the announcement doesn’t show any ports, the mystery image posted on Twitter on Monday shows a microSD port, a headphone port, and an integrated microphone. The microSD slot provides an expansion opportunity in the event the Flex has mediocre internal storage space. We’ll have more info for you when the device is released in November.

Tesla receives $10 million state grant to build Model X SUV

On Wednesday, Tesla was approved for a $10 million grant from the California Energy Commission, which will be used to buy components for the electric Model X SUV, and further expansion of the manufacturing capacity for its Fremont factory. For its part in this, Tesla will have to pony up $50 million to match the grant. The Model X SUV was unveiled back in February, when it amassed over $40 million in sales.

Tesla is being hailed as an innovator responsible for creating 1,500 jobs in California, and for creating green zero-emission cars. Said Ryan McCarthy of the California Air Resources Board, “Tesla has the unique distinction of being the only automaker to actually ask us to increase our targets under zero emission rules.” He went on to state that the Gen 3 from Tesla could end up being a groundbreaking vehicle in the world of electric vehicles, referring to another electric car in the works.

Tesla stated that the $10 million grant will be used in part to hiring of 700 more workers in 2014, when production for the Model X starts. The company’s vice president added that while Tesla is most commonly portrayed as “producing an electric sports car,” its actual goal is simply the aggressive promotion of electric automobiles. California commissioner Carla Peterman said that the addition of the Model X SUV, which is the crossover version of the Model X sedan, will increase eventual mass adoption of electric vehicles.

The Model X SUV is fully electric, and is the third prototype that has been revealed in recent times. As you can see from its picture, this SUV has the signature “Falcon Wings” doors, which open upwards instead of outward. It has two trunks instead of one, due to the lack of a large combustion engine, providing ample storage room when compared to standard SUVs. The Model X has all-wheel drive, and can achieve a 0-60 speed in 4.4 seconds.

T-Mobile’s holiday roadmap leaked: LG Optimus L9, HTC Windows Phone 8X spotted

DNP TMobile's holiday roadmap leaked LG Optimus L9, HTC Windows PhoneX spotted

According to a leaked roadmap on TMoNews, the magenta carrier appears to have a few tantalizing offerings coming its way this holiday season. A curious BlackBerry handheld dubbed the Armstrong, a color refresh of the Samsung Galaxy S II, a possibly Android-flavored Huawei Summit and the LG Optimus L9 are all slated to launch just on or before Halloween. Going into the next month, we see the HTC Windows Phone 8X making the pre-Thanksgiving cut with a potential debut of November 14th. Notably absent are the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the Nokia Lumia 810, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be there when December rolls around. Of course, this info didn’t come through official channels, so we wouldn’t bank on any of the handsets as holiday gifts just yet. Still, its nice to know they’re coming, and you can get the full details on these and other devices at the source.

What If Batman Used Apple Maps? [Video]

Here’s an Apple Maps parody that’s absolutely hilarious: what if Batman used Apple Maps in The Dark Knight to find Rachel Dawes? Yeah, that wouldn’t have been good. Siri would have sent Batman down wrong turns, parking lots and malls just to see everything get blown up. More »

iPhone holographic display created with prism crystal

A Japanese man posted a YouTube video showing a real hologram created using a prism crystal, bits of cardboard, and his iPhone. The video shows a holographic Siri dancing around inside the prism, which can be viewed from different perspectives as the camera moves around the prism. The best part? The setup is so simple, you can make one yourself using your own smartphone.

According to the YouTube video description, the setup involves a -3.75 index prism crystal, which is placed on a flat surface with small cardboard stands around it. The phone – an iPhone 4s, to be precise – is placed on the cardboard stands so that screen hovers directly above the point of the prism. When the phone is turned on, the image is displayed within the prism as a three-dimensional hologram. You can watch it in action via the video below.

A quick search on YouTube for “iPhone hologram” reveals a variety of videos, most of which are actually wall projections or concept videos. In this case, however, the hologram is real, and is made the same way the giant holographic display was at CES 2011. In case you’re feeling inspired, you can get your own prism crystal online and from some science shops.

Holograms are a novelty now, but are moving into the mainstream, particularly after the Tupac hologram that grabbed nationwide attention. The Tupac hologram was created using projection technology from AV Concepts, while the hologram model was created by Digital Domain. As holograms become more popular, and with the utter simplicity of the model created above, it wouldn’t be surprising if one day in the near future you’ll able to buy a pre-made little hologram cube for your own smartphone.

What Kids in 1977 Thought the Year 2000 Would Look Like [Past Perfect]

On February 26, 1977 in Steubenville, Ohio, the Herald Star asked people to make their predictions of the year 2000. Most of the letters predicting the future came from 10-12 year old kids still in middle school. What’s amazing is how right some of them actually were. More »

Leaked AT&T training documents reveal anti-piracy plan

A leaked batch of AT&T training documents reveal an anti-piracy plan in the books, which includes sending warning notices to flagged accounts. In what seems to be a completely draconian measure, any subscriber who’s account is flagged multiple times for copyright infringement will have access to frequently-visited websites (Facebook? YouTube?) blocked until they complete an online course on copyright. The warning notices will begin on November 28th.

This comes after the team-up of AT&T, Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon, who joined ranks with the MPAA and RIAA to form the Center for Copyright Information (CCI). The providers and MPAA/RIAA set out an agreement in which Internet subscribers would receive warnings for downloading copyrighted items. The subscriber will receive several warnings before the provider can then enact a harsher punishment.

None of the five providers have publicly commented on their involvement in the anti-piracy scheme. The leaked AT&T training documents provide the first glimpse into the plan, which is not without (extensive) controversy. The documents explain the upcoming changes to staff, and include this bit of info: “AT&T will not share any personally identifiable information about its customers with content owners until authorized by the customer or required to do so by law.”

An alleged source within the Center for Copyright Information told TorrentFreak that all five providers planned to launch the program on the same day. If true, this means that Verizon, Comcast, Cablevision, and Time Warner customers will begin receiving piracy notices November 28th, in addition to AT&T subscribers. The “online education tutorial on copyright” will be triggered on the fifth or sixth warning notice, at which point access to certain frequently visited websites will be blocked until the tutorial is completed.
