Microsoft Finds the Worst Way to Advertise Cloud Storage [Video]

When you’ve got a cloud platform in a world of cloud platforms, you have to find a way to make yours stand out in the crowd. This is the wrong way. This new Windows Azure “theme song” by NoClue is just about as comprehensible as it is a good idea, but at least it’s not the worst tech music video out there, due in part to the fact that it sounds like gibberish. It probably won’t be as good at getting people stoked about Windows Azure as it will get them stoked to make NoClue puns, but press is press, right? [YouTube via The Verge] More »

Nokia to trial solar-powered charging accessory in Nigeria and Kenya this week

We know Nokia is pretty big on the whole wireless charging thing, especially when they demonstrated the feature when they unveiled the Nokia Lumia 920. It seems that wireless charging is not the only thing Nokia is interested in and in a blog post, the Finnish company revealed that they are also taking a look at solar-powered charging. Now before you think that this is just another novelty feature and accessory that Nokia is trying to sell, you would be mistaken as this is a move by Nokia to get phones into the hands of people in developing countries where a stable flow of electricity is available, which means that charging your phone consistently might not be feasible.

This solar charging accessory has been designed for people living in Kenya and Nigeria and according to Nokia, the Portable Solar Charger DC-40 can turn one minute of charging time into two minutes worth of talk time. It relies on a thin photovoltaic panel which weighs 93 grams and a 3 meter long cable that connects to Nokia’s phone via the 2mm plug. Nokia will be piloting the program this week and thousands of people from Nigeria and Kenya are expected to help test it out.

The camHoodie iPhone 5 case claims to fix the purple lens flare issue

Recently there have been several reports where iPhone 5 owners have noticed a certain purple lens flare when they take photos. Apple replied by saying that this is normal and suggested that they try taking photos differently. Well if you’d rather not change the way you take photos but want to get rid of the sometimes annoying purple flare, Fotodiox has come up with an iPhone 5 dubbed the camHoodie which is said to reduce the purple flare effect when taking photos. It’s your typical iPhone 5 case with the difference being that it comes with an added rubber ring around the camera lens portion, which we assume helps to shield it from excessive light from the sides which might cause the purple flare. Based on the comparison photos they showed, it seems that the camHoodie really does make a difference, so if you’d like to check it out, head on over to Fotodiox’s website where you can order one for $24.95.

Best Buy to match the prices of online retailers this holiday season to prevent “showrooming”

We’ve all done this before where we go to a retail store, try out a product before heading home to place our orders online. This is not a move appreciated by many retailers especially since online retailers, such as Amazon or even eBay offer the products for cheaper prices. Well the good news is that if you’d rather not wait for a product to be shipped to you, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that during this holiday season, Best Buy will be matching their prices against online retailers such as Amazon. This is a move to put a halt to what is known as “showrooming”, where people come to try products out before buying them online.

Granted Best Buy admits that showrooming isn’t that huge of a deal, since 40% of their customers that walk leave with a product, but firmly believes that this is an issue that they should pay attention to. As an added incentive, the report has also revealed that Best Buy could be offering free home delivery on items that are out of stock which hopefully will keep customers loyal and choose to buy from them. Assuming this report is accurate, we guess we know where we will be shopping this holiday!

Best Buy To Price Match Amazon And Other Online Retailers This Holiday Season

Image (1) best-buy-logo.jpg for post 197812

By raise of hands, who goes to Best Buy to try something they intend to buy on Amazon or Newegg? Everyone? In what could be the retailer’s smartest move in years, Best Buy intends to match the prices of online retailers including Amazon this holiday season.

The word comes from the WSJ which reports Best Buy is attempting to increase store’s close rate by preventing showrooming. The retailer states that about 40% of store visitors leave without making a purchase. No doubt a good chunk of those consumers are using Best Buy as a showroom for an Internet retailer who sells a particular item at a lower cost.

Details about the new price matching policy are still light. Best Buy has yet to make this plan official or release the fine print — there is no doubt plenty of exclusions. Since this report just broke, the policy is likely not yet rolled out to the stores either.

But here’s a novel idea: Instead of driving customers to online retailers to find a better deal, Best Buy should lower its prices to make itself more competitive.

Apple agrees to license for Swiss railway clock in iOS 6, knows what time it is

Apple licenses Swiss railway clock, knows what time it is

When Swiss federal railway organization SBB and the Mondaine Group pointed out that the iOS 6 clock face looked remarkably like theirs, they weren’t so much upset as clearing their throat politely — it would be nice to get credit, if you don’t mind. That kindness has been met with some reciprocity, as SBB has confirmed a licensing deal with Apple that gives the iPad builder rights to use the iconic timepiece in its mobile OS. Exact terms aren’t forthcoming, although it’s likely not a princely sum when SBB is better known for punctuality than wheeling and dealing. All we know is that Apple can at last live with a good conscience when it checks the time in Geneva.

Apple’s Going to Pay Up for the iOS 6 Clock Design It Stole [IOS 6]

Apple shamlessly swiped the design of iOS 6’s iPad clock from the Swiss National Railway, and a couple of weeks ago, it was called out. Now that its copycatism has been exposed, Apple has agreed to licensing terms. More »

Google TV v3 demo video teases better search, mini-guide overlay and tablet control (Update)

Google TV v3 demo video teases better search, miniguide overlay and tablet control

During Google I/O this summer the Google TV team promised more features were on the way — the upgraded Google Play app just arrived — and now it’s posted a “sneak peek” video (embedded after the break) that shows us a few. As promised, there’s second screen integration allowing users to browse live TV and streaming content on the app, then choose it so it starts playing on the TV. Much of the demo is focused on the big improvements it says it’s made to search, with voice search that works across TV and the internet to quickly pull up specific content, content by genre or perform specific tasks like tuning in a particular channel or website like Google Maps. There’s also a new mini-guide overlay based on its personalized TV & Movies app so you can get an idea of what else is on without jumping completely away from what you were watching. Getting cheaper hardware available from more manufacturers is just one part of the puzzle, we’ll see if these improvements make Google TV a desired intermediary between broadcast television and internet streaming.

Update: Someone may have goofed and released the vid accidentally, because it’s been marked as private now. We did manage to grab a couple of snapshots though, check them out after the break.

Update 2: As we suspected, this was definitely an accidental early release of the video so while these updates are certainly on the way, they may not be right around the corner. According to a Google spokesperson “We’re excited to bring users the next version of Google TV’s software in the months ahead, but have nothing further to announce at this time.” And so the waiting game begins.

Mysterious Monster Eye Washes Ashore in Florida [WTFriday]

Yesterday, Gino Covacci was walking peacefully by the sea when he found this: a gigantic, monstrous eye still oozing blood. Scientists haven’t identified the leviathan who lost it yet. Was it a giant squid, a whale, or the eye from a titanic monster born mutant because of nuclear tests? More »
