Lowpower chip guru quits Samsung for Apple, with heavily implied implications

The iPhone 5 already proved Apple’s desire to move away from existing processor designs and exert more control over these fundamental components. Is it too crazy to imagine that Cupertino would like the same sense of freedom with its laptops? Perhaps not, especially since the biggest company in the world just hired a guy called Jim Mergard, who helped to pioneer AMD’s low-power Brazos netbook chips and who had only recently moved to Samsung. A former colleague of Mergard’s, Patrick Moorhead, told the WSJ that he would be “very capable of pulling together internal and external resources to do a PC processor for Apple” — possibly based on a mobile-style SoC (system-on-chip) rather than a traditional PC approach. That’s pure speculation of course, but funnily enough it’s where Intel seems to be headed too.

Faster-Than-Light Travel May Be Possible [Science Fact]

According to Einstein’s special theory of relativity, light traveling in a vacuum is the universal speed limit. But scientists love to try and break rules—and now a tweaked version of Einstein’s equations suggests that faster-than-light travel might just be possible. More »

Mega Stomp Panic Audio Reality Costume

You know you are on to a winner here with the $39.99 Mega Stomp Panic Audio Reality Costume, especially when everyone else dresses up as a traditional witch, mummy, or even vampire for this coming Halloween. You can choose to be a robot, a zombie, or even an 8-bit hero – it does not really matter, as the Mega Stomp Panic Audio Reality Costume comes with clip-on motion-powered sound effects, where you are able to draw from its reservoir of 9 sound banks in all. One thing is for sure – the traditional costume which functions as a disguise based upon visual appearance will be no more, as you can now create a costume with but sound.

All sounds from the Mega Stomp are synchronized to your steps and stomps, which is ideal for giving out the illusion that you yourself are the maestro in orchestrating them, as though you were generating them yourself. It is more than enough to geek out even the most hardcore Halloween celebrating geek, and also to scare more neighborhood kids than most compared to your peers with their (now plain in comparison to yours) costumes.

BlackBerry rep shows off L-Series smartphone, forgets it’s meant to be a secret (video)

Mexican BlackBerry rep shows off Lseries BB10 smartphone, forgets it's meant to be a secret video

While the rest of us are chasing after dev phones and blurrycam shots, BlackBerry representatives in Mexico seem to be happy to wave honest-to-goodness L-Series handsets around on video. Website Hola Telcel filmed the sequence after the break, in which we’re given a shaky tour of BB10 — including the camera app’s interesting “best shot” feature — but with virtually no attention given to the hardware itself. Nevertheless, we can just about make out the previously-noted design, with the screen panel sandwiched between slightly rounded matte black plastic top and bottom parts, and a big silver BlackBerry logo emblazoned across the bottom. Also, unless we’re reading way too much into it, the way people hold the device suggests it could be nice and thin.

Verizon announces Motorola Droid RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD for the 18th of October

We have been hearing a lot of talk about the Motorola Droid RAZR HD and the RAZR MAXX HD, both of which are expected to arrive on Verizon’s network in the near future. In fact screen protectors designed for the Droid RAZR HD were spotted n Verizon’s stores, leading many, including us, to speculate that the announcement for both phones could be due soon. Well you have been looking forward to either device, you’re in luck as Verizon has officially announced that they will be launching both the Droid RAZR HD and the RAZR MAXX HD on the 18th of October, and they will be priced at $199 and $299 with a two-year contract respectively.

So what can you expect for your money? Well both devices are virtually identical, save for the RAZR MAXX HD which sports a larger battery that promises 32 hours of normal use, while bumping up its internal storage to 32GB, although both phones can have their storage expanded via microSD. Apart from that, customers should expect a 4.7” 720p display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM, an 8MP camera, NFC and 4G LTE compatibility. So, any takers?

Woman in France experiences bill shock worth 11,721,000,000,000,000 Euros

We’ve all heard the term “bill shock” before, although for those who haven’t, it’s usually referred to the moment when one receives their phone bill and sees a price quoted at the bottom which was way more than they had expected. Bill shock usually results from exceeding data usage which is then charged per kilobyte (this depends on your carrier), or by placing too many international phone calls, or sometimes it’s merely the error of the telephone company themselves. This is pretty much what a customer in France experienced when she received a bill that was worth, get ready for it, 11,721,000,000,000,000 Euros!

How on earth did she manage to rack up that huge amount? Well according to the story, she wanted to opt out of her contract and was warned that there would be a penalty for doing so, although we doubt anyone could have expected that amount. As it turns out, there was some sort of printing error involved and after many persistent calls and what seemed to be rather unhelpful customer service, the customer managed to get her carrier to concede that this was a printing error and that the amount due was 117.21 Euros – phew!

High-end Sony full-frame camera scheduled for May-June 2013 announcement [Rumor]

If you’ve enjoyed Sony’s range of professional Alpha DSLR cameras, you might be interested to learn that according to the rumors, it seems that come May-June 2013, Sony could be announcing their next full-frame camera system. This is expected to be a high-end camera and will be “photographer” oriented. According to the reports, there are several prototype units of this alleged camera at the moment – one with a 36MP image sensor that is used in the Nikon D800, and another unit which reportedly has a whopping 50MP sensor which is supposedly Sony’s attempt to go as close as possible to “medium format” quality.

However since we have a good 8-9 months before we actually see these devices, and assuming that they are real, it should be noted that these are merely prototype units which means they are most definitely subject to change upon its announcement. Hypothetically speaking, what sort of features would you like to see Sony’s next high-end full-frame camera sport in 2013? Let us know in the comments below! Until then, we suggest you take the info above with a grain of salt.

Amazon confirms zero Kindle hardware profit

Amazon makes no profit on its Kindle hardware sales, CEO Jeff Bezos has confirmed, with the ereaders and Kindle Fire tablets sold “at our cost” so as to promote ebook, video, and music downloads. The online retailer has long been tight-lipped on its pricing strategy around Kindle, with ongoing rumors that the hardware was sold with minimum profit in mind or, even, at a loss. That’s not quite the case, Bezos told the BBC.

“We sell the hardware at our cost, so it is break-even on the hardware” the chief executive said. “We want to make money when people use our devices, not when people buy our devices.”

The strategy has allowed Amazon to continue to increase pressure on its ereader rivals, with price cuts by Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and others all usually being parried by trimming of Kindle pricing too. More recently, Amazon has introduced its “Special Offers” system, in which the price of the ereader itself is discounted in return for showing advertising on the lockscreen and homescreen.

According to Bezos, Amazon’s approach has paid off in media sales. “What we find is that when people buy a Kindle they read four times as much as they did before they bought the Kindle” he explained. Nor, perhaps more surprisingly, do they necessarily switch entirely to digital. ”They don’t stop buying paper books” Bezos revealed, “Kindle owners read four times as much, but they continue to buy both types of books.”

Amazon put the new Kindle Paperwhite up for preorder in select European countries today, having seen the illuminated ereader sell out in the US. It will be accompanied by an expansion of the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library system, which allows Amazon Prime subscribers to borrow ebooks as part of their subsidized shipping package.

Apple likely to reveal iPad mini on October 23rd, reports AllThingsD

Apple to reveal iPad mini on October 23rd, reports All Things D

Rumors about the iPad mini are really starting to heat up and alleged leaks of the body are hitting the web with machine gun-like regularity. Now AllThingsD claims to have another piece of the puzzle — when. According to “people familiar” with the matter, Apple is scheduling a press event for October 23rd, where it will likely take the wraps off its latest (and smallest) tablet offering. The outlet reported a similar rumor ahead of the iPhone 5 launch, insisting that the littlest slate would be held until October. Now, here we are — it’s October — and we’re still waiting for our invitations. As usual, you’ll be the first to know when ours arrives and we can confirm the when and where (and we think you already know the what). As for the how and why? Well, that we’re just going to have to wait and see.

Update: Others are now chiming in to say they’ve confirmed the date with their own sources, including Reuters and Jim Dalrymple of The Loop.
