Your Portal gun isn't as cool as HackaDay's Portal gun which actually levitates a companion cube

There you were, thinking your NECA-produced Portal gun replica was super neat all on its own. Well, okay — it is — but wouldn’t it be even cooler if you could use it to make a baby companion cube levitate in mid-air with it? That question is exactly what lead to Hack a Day’s creation of just such a device, as seen in the video below the break. By reappropriating a magnetic floating globe’s parts and attaching said parts to both the gun and a homemade companion cube, Hack a Day were able to recreate at least part of the magic Chell experiences in her Aperture Science adventures. Of course, if you move the gun too much, the companion cube will fall out. Just think what that does to its psyche! You monster.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 receives Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update

If you so happen to be a proud owner of the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300, then here is a wee bit of good news for you. This particular tablet has just received the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, and we are referring to the LTE-enabled version. After all, it was a couple of months ago in August when ASUS introduced the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the non-LTE version of the Transformer Pad 300, so better late than never with the TF300, right? Performing the update is a snap, all you need to do is to download the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL firmware (version 10.4.3.6) followed by flashing your tablet with the latest ROM. Once done, you are able to sit back and enjoy the increased speed which accompanies the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.

This particular operating system update would be able to give the Transformer Pad 300 a new lease of life, considering the tablet market is highly competitive at this point in time, not to mention Apple rumored to take a stab at the smaller display tablet range with their upcoming 7.85” iPad mini.

Amazon Kindle sold at cost

If you ever wondered how come Amazon’s Kindle e-reader seemed to be amazingly affordable, the cat is out of the bag from the horse’s mouth. Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos has confirmed that their Kindle e-reader is virtually sold “at cost”, where the online retail giant makes money from the Kindle range through the sales of online content. Now, this is more or less an open secret to many for a long time now, considering how Amazon does not have the kind of marketing and clout that Apple has to make money off hardware as well as software.

You know what they say – if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. The way we see it, Amazon did not really have a choice in pricing their Kindle e-readers higher, since it might be priced out of the market. Better use the same model that video game console manufacturers have espoused most of the time in recent years – lose some money on the hardware, but make up for it on the software front. At least it sees the population of Kindle e-readers grow, while consumption of content increases in tandem. Well, different roads lead to Rome still, with proverbial Rome here being profitability.

Breast Tissue Screening Bra sniffs out cancer cells

Cancer is such a common disease these days, striking just about every strata of society without any kind of prejudice. Good thing newer forms of treatment have been developed over the few years, but nothing quite beats early detection for the best treatment possible. First Warning Systems has come up with a smart sports bra that they call the Breast Tissue Screening Bra. Basically, this sports bra functions like a continuous monitoring system for breast cancer which First Warning Systems claim could be more effective compared to mammograms.

There will be a sensor in the bra itself that is sensitive enough to measure cell temperature changes which are associated with blood vessel growth, and these feed tumors. Pattern recognition software will get to work, processing such information in order to identify changes that might result in a developing tumor. So far, clinical trials that involve 650 women saw the smart bra detect the presence of tumors half a dozen years (!) before traditional imaging systems were able to, with an accuracy rate of 92.1%. The Breast Tissue Screening Bra should be commercialized in Europe from 2013 onwards, followed by the US the year after, depending on how fast regulatory approval is.

MIT pencil draws out sensors with carbon nanotubes

Have you played the game Scribblenauts? I am quite sure that those who have given it a go would have most likely fallen in love with the title. Well, if you have a penchant for drawing stuff using a pencil, then this particular pencil from MIT is a little bit extra special. Chemists from MIT have managed to use a pencil where its graphite “lead” has been replaced by a special material that is known as carbon nanotubes. Basically, lines of carbon nanotubes are drawn on specially treated paper, and whenever an electrical current is fired through the paper, the change in resistance will be a sign that depicts the bonding of gas molecules to the nanotubes. So far, MIT’s test sensor has managed to detect small traces of ammonia gas successfully, and eventually, the whole idea of this exercise is to develop it in a way for it to function with just about any kind of gas. A smart pencil, if you will.

Oakland A’s Eliminated By Detroit Tigers With 6-0 Loss In Game 5

OAKLAND, Calif. — Almost as soon as Omar Infante threw out Seth Smith to end the Oakland Athletics surprising season, despair turned to appreciation.

Ear infection app relies on smartphone to get the job done

“There’s an app for that,” or so the saying goes, and when we talk about apps, first and foremost it would be the iPhone that comes to mind as that was the handset which more or less kickstarted the whole app store shebang. Well, researchers over in Atlanta are working on an app which when used in conjunction with your smartphone (one that has a flash built-in for the camera, of course), it will be able to transform your device into an ear scope.

Dr. Lam and his team of researchers over at the Children’s Healthcare, Georgia Tech, Emory, and a California biomedical company have come together to develop an earache app which will transform your smartphone into a scope. Dr. Lam explained, “That enables the camera, and the light source of the smart phone to function as an otoscope, an ear scope. Theoretically, all you need to do is push a button. And you have an image of the ear.” Seems like a no-brainer, no? We wonder what the uptake of this app will be among parents in the long run.

‘The Vampire Diaries’ Premiere: Did Elena Turn Into A Vampire? (VIDEO)

The fourth season of “The Vampire Diaries” kicked off, and faced the looming question from last season’s finale. After dying with vampire blood in her system, did Elena complete her transformation into a vampire by drinking human blood? It was a close one.

Bonnie failed in her attempts to retrieve the part of Elena’s soul that is in the realm of the dead, while Elena found herself captured by the town council, along with Stefan and Rebekah. With time running out — if Elena doesn’t feed, she dies — Rebekah and Stefan tricked a guard into getting too close and killed him. Elena was able to reach out and drink his blood as it pooled around him.

And thus, the regular girl who was at the center of the series for three season is no more, replaced by a new vampire. Everything changes between her and everything she’s ever known, and with the secrets out about the town’s vampires and werewolves, it looks like this promises to be a season that pushes the show in a wildly new direction.

Bye Bye Laundry hanger concept

What you see above is something special, where it is known as the Bye Bye Laundry hanger that carry specialized charcoal within the capsule. This specialized charcoal has just one main purpose for its existence, that is, to air out clothes which might need a freshen-up instead of a full wash. Not only does this help you save time as there is no need to do any laundry, it is even better for the environment since you will get to save on water, power and soap. The Bye Bye Laundry loop-shaped hanger will boast of a filtered glass chamber located at the top, where the special charcoal pellets within have been processed with oxygen, allowing it to function as an extremely powerful and effective odor eliminator for any clothes resting on it.

Still, don’t expect the Bye Bye Laundry hanger to do wonders when it comes to your curry-stained dress or shirt. It is just meant to absorb smells, as well as air out work-related attire such as a blazer or jacket. Designed by British designer Lisa Marie Bengtsson, we do wonder just when will such a concept become reality.

DIRECTV announces DIRECTV Genie HD DVR

Touting it as the “most advanced and intuitive HD DVR” available, DIRECTV has announced their latest HD DVR: the DIRECTV Genie. This new DVR brings to the table a whole roster of features you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere, including the ability to record up to 5 high-definition videos at once. According to DIRECTV, this flagship DVR is the by-product of integrating as many of the most requested features as possible.

Features include an opt-in recommendation system, which will recommend shows based on the subscriber’s preferences. A single recorded show can be watched on up to four televisions at the same time. Shows can be recorded and deleted from every room with service. With the Genie, the single receiver will operate for the entire home, so that an individual DVR is not needed for every room in which service is wanted.

Recordings can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance, while up to 5 weeks of past shows can be viewed at any time. Genie utilized DIRECTV’s TV Apps to provide access to Pandora, Facebook, Twitter, and ScoreGuide, in addition to the usual array of weathers/news/sports. Genie has 1TB of storage space, which can store about 200 hours of high-definition content, or 800 hours of standard-definition content.

Qualified DIRECTV customers can get a free upgrade to the Genie, and up to four different room connections. New customers who subscribe to certain packages that include the Genie are being offered perks, such as the 2012 NFL Sunday Ticket and free premium channels for three months. The Genie DVR is available beginning today.
