Apparent Gmail for Android 42 leak shows off pinchtozoom, swipe features

If you’ve been desperate for new Gmail on your Android, a leaked APK obtained by Android Police — that may or may not have come from one of those LG E960 Mako (alleged) Nexus phones that it seems everyone has — is sporting some fresh tweaks. As seen in this demo video, the update adds pinch-to-zoom on individual messages, as well as swipe to delete or archive. The app itself is labeled as version 4.2, and while the APK isn’t widely available, the site reports that if it is released you’ll need to be rooted and running Android 4.0 or higher to get an early taste of the future.

Paul Ryan Employs Same ‘Failure To Lead’ Gambit He Uses Against Obama

Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney have now both dodged questions about their tax plans by saying in essence they would copy a strategy that they describe as “failing to lead” when President Barack Obama has done it — leaving details to Congress.

In Thursday night’s debate, Ryan did it in refusing to disclose the tax loopholes that he and Romney say they would close to “broaden” the tax base and pay for a tax cut estimated to cost at least $5 trillion. They assert that by closing those loopholes, their tax cut would be entirely paid for.

But neither man has suggested a single loophole, such as the mortgage deduction or deductions for charitable giving, that they would close.

’30 Rock’: Bryan Cranston And Catherine O’Hara Ham It Up As Kenneth’s Family (VIDEO)

Kenneth Purcell had his world turned upside down this week on “30 Rock,” when his mother, played by Catherine O’Hara, dropped by for a visit. She brought along her friend Ronald McDonald, played by Bryan Cranston, which brought out a very rare thing — mean Kenneth. Kenneth clearly hated this guy, which made it even harder when his mom dropped a bombshell on him.

She revealed that she and Ron had gotten married … seven years ago. “Look, Ken. I’m just trying to replace your dad,Ron said. “Oh, dang it. That’s the wrong thing to say, isn’t it.”

It was certainly a lot of fun watching Cranston flex those comedy muscles he honed to perfection on “Malcolm in the Middle” after so many years playing it dark and serious on “Breaking Bad.”

How Do You Start an Email? [Chatroom]

I don’t really put much thought into e-mails. Some notes are quickly sent without any salutation, a few are carefully crafted but most of my e-mails just start with Hey or a person’s name. Am I being judged for my e-mail salutation? More »

Civics Education Testing Only Required In 9 States For High School Graduation: CIRCLE Study

A study by the Center for Information and Research on Civil Learning & Engagement at Tufts University has found that most states do not emphasize civic education, which includes learning about citizenship, government, law, current events and related topics.

In the current school year, 21 states require a state-designed social studies test — a significant decrease from 2001, when 34 states conducted regular assessments on social studies subjects. Only nine states require students to pass a social studies test to graduate from high school: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. Georgia’s will be phased out, but Maryland and Florida are slated to add high-stakes tests.

Although 39 states require at least one course in American government or civics, only eight states administer statewide, standardized tests specifically in civics/American government: California, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. Of those, Ohio and Virginia are the only ones that require students to pass said test in order to graduate from high school.

Gmail 4.2 for Android brings pinch-to-zoom

The next Gmail app for Android will have new features, according to a video posted at Android Police. The new app will support pinch-to-zoom, one of the most requested features. Also added into the mix is swiping to archive and delete items, letting you simply flick away messages as you scroll through your inbox.

As you can see on the screenshot below, you can choose what action to apply to the new swiping feature, either having it delete the message, archive or delete, or you can disable the feature if you’re concerned about an accidental swipe sending a message to the trash unbeknownst to you. The default setting is “Archive or Delete.” In the default setting, swiping a message in the inbox will automatically send it to archives, while swiping a message in Sent or All Mail will send it to the trash.

The last new feature is the ability to report an email as phishing. These build on the features that were added to previous versions of Gmail for Android, which included easier access to recent labels, swiping to flip between conversations, notifications for individual labels, and offline syncing for up to 30 days of messages. Presumably, Gmail 4.2 will bring about some bug fixes, as well, as did 4.0.

This is a leaked version of the app. When Google releases it, you’ll be able to update your current Gmail app from your smartphone via the Play Store. If the leaked app is released in the wild, you’ll be able to run it if you have a rooted phone running at least Ice Cream Sandwich. Until either of these things happen, we’ll just have to be patient while dreaming of pinch-to-zoom and swipe-to-delete goodness.

Ryan Changes Tone On Foreign Policy In VP Debate (VIDEO)

In Thursday’s Vice Presidential Debate, Rep. Paul Ryan struck an aggressive pose on foreign policy, saying the US shouldn’t have sought UN approval to take action on behalf of the Syrian rebels, vowing not to let Iran acquire nuclear weaponry, and suggesting that US forces might need to stay in Afghanistan later than the proposed 2014 withdrawal.

Ryan also said more than once that Obama’s foreign policy was “unraveling,” and that the country shouldn’t be cutting defense spending. “When we equivocate on our values…it projects weakness. And when we look weak, our adversaries are more willing to test us.”

But Ryan’s tone hasn’t always been so pugnacious.

‘The X Factor’ Judge’s Houses: Is Vino Alan Too Tough For The Show? (VIDEO)

The X Factor” wrapped the Judge’s Houses round by showing the performances from the Teens category and the Over-25s. L.A. Reid made it very clear that he wasn’t happy to have the Over-25s, and went so far as to tell them that he wasn’t all that excited about them. So the pressure was on for this group more than ever. Especially because many of them feel this is their last opportunity at superstardom.

Vino Alan, at 40-years old, is the oldest contestant in the competition. He blew the judges away with his vocal performance, covering P!nk’s “Sober,” but the judges were slightly worried about his appearance. Vino is one tough looking dude, but his gruff exterior hides a sensitive and soaring voice.

That emotion he brings to his performance comes in part from his troubled childhood. He opened up about coming from an abusive home. “When I was a kid, my mom married an abusive man,” he said. “You know, I was physically tortured and mentally tortured. But the biggest torture of all was having her beat nightly.”
