The engineering team over at Microsoft just signed Office 2013 into its Release to Manufacturing (RTM) build. As of now, the coding and testing phases for the application are complete, and it is being moved into distribution. According to Microsoft, it is the most ambitious version of the Office suite to date, and is the first to be optimized for touch devices.
Office 2013 will include all of Microsoft’s Office applications, cloud services, and servers. It has a new design that – much like Windows 8 – has been optimized for touch devices. Says the official Office blog, “[Office 2013] unlocks modern scenarios in social, reading, note-taking, meetings and communications.”
What’s next? Office 365 Enterprise customers will receive new features with the next service update beginning in November. Those with an MSDN or TechNet subscription will be able to download the final version by the middle of November. Finally, individuals with Software Assurance will be able to download Office 2013 via the Volume Licensing Service Center by the middle of November.
As of right now, the plan is to have Office 2013 on retailer shelves in Q1 of next year. Beginning October 19th, anyone who buys Office 2010 from a local retailer or reseller will be able to get Office 2013 free of charge. After the Windows 8 launch later this month, those with Windows RT devices will be able to preview the new Office.

We see a lot of sleek-looking technology pass through our doors, but it’s rare that the inventions could be called beautiful by those who aren’t immersed in the gadget world. We’d venture that North Carolina State University might have crossed the divide by creating an energy storage technology that’s both practical and genuinely pretty. Its technology vaporizes germanium sulfide and cools it into 20-30 nanometer layers that, as they’re combined, turn into nanoflowers: elegant structures that might look like the carnation on a prom dress or tuxedo, but are really energy storage cells with much more capacity than traditional cells occupying the same area. The floral patterns could lead to longer-lived supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries, and the germanium sulfide is both cheap and clean enough that it could lead to very efficient solar cells that are more environmentally responsible. As always, there’s no definite timetable for when (and if) NC State’s technology might be commercialized — so call someone’s bluff if they promise you a nanoflower bouquet.

Welcome to Thursday evening, folks – just one more work day and the glorious weekend is here once again. This afternoon we heard that both the iPad Mini and the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro – neither of which officially exist yet, remember – have been delayed due to problems with component yields, but not long after, analysts were saying that the MacBook Pro with Retina Display is still on track to launch this year. Apple has managed to delay the ban of the iPhone and iPad in South Korea, and we learned that the company’s new dock connector is nearly impossible to mod in a new teardown.
If you’ve been waiting for either the DROID RAZR HD or the RAZR MAXX HD, good news: you’ll be able to pick them up from Verizon in just one short week. The Samsung Galaxy S III Mini was officially unveiled today, though its specs aren’t much to write home about, and we learned that the sales ban on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has been lifted. Google boss Eric Schmidt expects Android to hit 1 billion activations within the next year, and today Sprint confirmed that it has been in buyout talks with SoftBank.
Apple has released a new iPod ad called “Bounce,” while Nokia was busy delivering prices for its Lumia 920 and 820 accessories in the UK. Apple was awarded an interesting new patent today, and Verizon says that it will keep its 2G/3G service active until at least 2021. Today Acer revealed both the new M5 and V5 lines of Windows 8 notebooks, and we heard that at one point, Nokia was planning to bring an N9 MeeGo tablet to Verizon.
Facebook is looking to improve its apps with stricter Open Graphs policies, and Gearbox announced a new DLC pack for good ol’ Borderlands 2 today. Ubisoft delivered a new trailer showing off the weapons in Assassin’s Creed III, while a new compilation called the Rockstar Games Collection: Edition 1 was announced. Anonymous has apparently gone to war with Facebook, bringing down the social network across Europe today, but thankfully it seems that things are slowly coming back online. Finally tonight, we go hands-on with both the Huawei Ascend D Quad XL and SHADOWGUN: DEADZONE‘s new multiplayer beta, while Chris Burns tells us why the Galaxy S III Mini represents a missed opportunity for Samsung. Now that we’ve taken a look at the Acer Iconia W510, it’s heartening to see it finally hit the FCC. The documentation doesn’t tell us much we don’t already know about the Windows 8 tablet, though it’s interesting to note it packs a 7300mAh battery, which will hopefully lead to that promised nine-hour battery life. As a quick refresher, the W510 packs a Clover Trail-based Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, a 10.1-inch display, and will cost roughly $500 for the 32GB SSD model. The timing of the FCC listing does seem to point to Acer actually hitting that November 9th launch date, so keep your fingers tiles crossed.

It’s surprising that a rap song about Instagram hasn’t come out before right now, especially when you remember that Rick Ross is the best Instagrammer of all time ever. Just look at his profile. If you like pictures of swagged out shoes and giant diamond encrusted watches, follow him now. So, obviously he’d be on a song called “Instagram that Hoe.” Private jet? Instragram that hoe. Stack of hundos? Instagram that hoe. A giant blunt? Instagram that hoe. D-Link still sees there being a place for powerline networking, such as a basement home theater, but knows that many of us don’t want an overly clunky set of adapters or to effectively buy a second network. Its new (if slightly awkwardly named) PowerLine AV+ Mini Adapter Starter Kit caters just to that desire for a no-hassle network in places WiFi won’t reach. The bundle carries a pair of small, 200Mbps adapters that won’t monopolize the wall outlets, a pair of Ethernet cables to link up… and that’s it. Apart from the optional 128-bit AES encryption, there’s nothing else needed to either make a direct connection or graft powerline technology into an existing network. At $60, the already shipping kit is also just low enough in price that there’s very little standing between us and a reliable connection for a console or placeshifter.

Ahead of the Windows 8 launch, Sony has just announced its line up for the United States, with the Sony Vaio Tap 20 and the Sony Vaio Duo 11 being the most striking Windows 8 computers from the company.
The Vaio Tap 20 ($879+) is particularly original as it is basically a 20″ all-in-one computer that can also run autonomously for a few hours, thanks to its integrated battery. The design is very nice and I would recommend taking a good look at it in a Sony Store if you have the opportunity. We’ve already covered the Vaio Tap 20 hardware during IFA, so the other interesting highlight of the Tap 20 is that Sony is including high-quality gesture-optimized software so that users can take advantage of Windows 8 and the tablet format from day 1. That includes ArtRage Studio, a great painting tool, and Fingertapps Organizer, a message board for the whole family. (more…)
