Paper-based Google Docs coming our way?

To say that live would become a whole lot harder without cloud services like Google Docs is an understatement, especially for folks who right now organize their entire document and work collection on the cloud itself. How about taking this idea and merging it with something more traditional? The University of Tokyo saw the Naemura Group work on what is literally paper computing technology, where it can automatically erase, copy and print hand-drawn sketches on paper automatically. Of course, a whole lot of hardware is involved as you can see in the video above, where the system relies on a camera and computer, using a laser and UV light so that one can work directly with the hand-drawn sketches using the computer.

Someone from the research and development team described it this way, “This is one technology for truly turning ordinary paper into a display. Until now, it’s been possible to project things onto paper and use it as a screen, or import things drawn on paper to PC by using a digital pen. But the first method uses light, so the results can only be seen in the dark, and with the second method, even if you can import things, you can’t access them on paper from the computer.”

Computing on paper, now this is an idea that might just stick. Artists should want to explore the inner workings of this system if they want to expand their artistic horizons.

4 million Windows 8 upgrades in less than a week

Does 4 million Windows 8 upgrades in under a week sound impressive to you? This is quite a strong start by any standards, as Microsoft continued with their aggressive overhaul of its Windows operating system, now arriving at Windows 8. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer shared some statistics at the annual Build developer conference, citing that 4 million Windows users have already upgraded their operating systems since it was launched late last week.

Not only that, Microsoft has also made good on their corporate promise, delivering Windows 8 to “tens of millions of OEMs” (original equipment manufacturers) – and you can be sure that players such as Dell, HP, Asus, and Acer amongst many others have their fair share of Start-button-free powered computers in the pipeline for the masses. Have you made the upgrade to Windows 8 already, and have you enjoyed the ride so far? When you compare Windows 8′s performance with the latest Mac OS X release, there are some parallels to be drawn, as Apple’s flagship operating system saw 3 million upgrades in a somewhat similar time frame as well. One could argue that in terms of percentage, Apple “wins” since registers a higher percentage in this sense.

Fourth generation iPad stocks run low

We are not quite sure whether the low stocks of Apple devices in inventories are actually due to extremely high demand, small initial quantities, or a combination of both. What we do know, however, is this – Apple’s iPad mini stock is running low, and according to 9to5Mac, even the fourth generation iPad’s initial stock are more or less exhausted, meaning that folks who have placed orders for the latest tablet refresh from Apple will have to wait for at least a week at best if they want to see it shipped out.

There are whispers going around that due to supply chain issues, Apple has difficulty in producing their fair share of iPads to meet initial demand. Since Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are coming up, expect Apple to face tight supplies of the fourth generation iPad and iPad mini tablets until December. In your opinion, why do you think are the issues plaguing the production of the iPad – are suppliers getting uncomfortable with Apple’s demands and traditionally notorious hardline stances to squeeze every single penny possible from them?

Google Search app for iOS updated with new voice search functionality, iPhone 5 compatibility

Google just released an updated version of its Search app for Android devices yesterday, and it’s now (as promised) also delivered a fairly big update to iOS users. That brings with it iPhone 5 compatibility, but the bigger news is the expanded voice search functionality, which promises “faster and significantly improved voice recognition,” with spoken responses à la Google Now provided alongside the search results. Those additions also extend to iPad users in addition to the iPhone and iPod touch — hit the App Store or the link below to take it for a spin yourself.

Google Play reaches 700,000 Android apps

Apple’s iTunes App Store has hundreds of thousands of apps to choose, and it’s one of the company’s main selling points for the iPhone and iPad. However, according to Bloomberg, Google said yesterday that they have closed in on the 700,000 mark for the number of Android apps in the Google Play store, which is right up there with the iTunes App Store.

Google has been working hard to lure developers into developing more apps for Android devices, and the company is making a push for better tablet apps, something that Apple has had an edge on ever since the company released the iPad in 2010. Hopefully with better proprietary tablet apps in the future, Google can look to overtake Apple in the tablet app ecosystem.

Yesterday, Google unveiled the Nexus 10 tablet, which features a 10-inch display and features a pixel-dense 2560×1600 resolution, which beats the iPad’s 2048×1536 Retina display. They also unveiled at 32GB Nexus 7 along with 3G capabilities. Google’s dedication to tablets is growing, so it only makes sense that their dedication to Android tablet apps grows as well.

However, Apple has argued that their iOS operating system leads to more sales than other mobile operating systems. Apple announced last week that it has paid around $6.5 billion to app developers since the iTunes App Store was launched in 2008. That’s quite impressive, but the number of Android apps in the Google Play might be a good reference that Google is doing something right as well for its developers.

Steve Balmer rally developers around Windows 8 at BUILD

This week, Microsoft is holding its BUILD developer conference. Steve Balmer (Microsoft’s CEO) went on stage to demonstrate himself what Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 were about. He did a really good job rallying the Windows 8 developers (arguably a crowd already converted here) and the crowd went away energized and enthusiastic. The top devices were shown, including the Microsoft Surface RT which had the biggest round of applause (read our full review of the Surface RT Tablet).

Microsoft’s Steven Guggenheimer went on stage to talk about the development side of things, including monetization strategies which include in-app sales and third party payment systems. Of course there were a fair number of app demonstration, including Skype and ESPN, which has put a lot of efforts into building a Windows 8 app. (more…)

Microsoft talks up Dropbox, Twitter, ESPN and PayPal for Window 8

There’s plenty of excitement surrounding the release of Windows 8 here at Build. The general consensus around the operating system, however, holds that the key to the OS’s success is all about the apps, and CEO Steve Ballmer had no shortage of news on that front. The green-polo-shirted exec made mention of an official tweet from Twitter, noting the service’s development plans for a Windows 8 app coming “in the months ahead.” Also on the slate is Dropbox — the popular storage service has an app “coming soon,” according to Microsoft’s own official blog. ESPN got a little face time at the event, showing off an app that’ll deliver news, scores and video to Windows 8 users. Paypal, meanwhile, took the opportunity to talk up an API that’ll bring its commerce services to Windows Store apps. More info on the new apps can be found in the source link below.

Windows 8 gets fully re-imagined ESPN app to usher in new touch age

Microsoft this week at Build 2012 revealed a re-imagined version of ESPN for the world of Windows 8, including a collection of touch-friendly action. Michael Bayle, vice president and general manager of ESPN mobile, made it clear that their full collection of media – not just sports scores – will be coming to Windows 8. Scores, radio casts, photos, video, and awesome Windows 8 integration is coming up soon. The first look we’ve ever gotten at this application is right on a tablet – though it’s clear that this app is made for all touch surfaces.

“Deep Pinning” is a central piece of this puzzle, and from all sides you’ll be seeing awesome control for the app with text, images, and sound working at all times. Snap View allows you to work with ESPN in a section of your display while you work with other apps at the same time. It’s made to give you the ESPN experience at all times of the day.

This app is ready for action today – believe it or not – and you can download it starting today from Microsoft’s own store on Windows 8. If you’re ready for this action on the smartphone, you can expect a new iteration soon as well. This is just the beginning, with apps such as Sports Illustrated, Wikipedia, and more awesome news and sports entertainment apps coming soon. Dropbox is coming as well, Oprah’s own lovely app environment, and “many, many, many many many more” as Steve Ballmer noted in his follow-up talk on apps specifically.

Have a peek at our timeline below of recent announcements surrounding Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 from Build 2012 and surrounding the launch that’s happened over the past few days. We’re here at the dawn of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 all at once – big things are going down!

Ultra Mobile offers $49 monthly unlimited plan

“Power, unlimited power!” is a line from a Star Wars film that we are all familiar with, the one where Anakin Skywalker turned to the Dark Side of the Force. Well, when it comes to mobile users, we would love to have one thing – an unlimited plan at a pocket-friendly price, and Ultra Mobile might have just achieved that with their latest $49 monthly plan, targeting folks who make international calls frequently. Touted to be the the only unlimited US voice, text and 4G data mobile phone service at that price each month, it will feature up to 1000 minutes of free direct-dial international calls and unlimited text to 194 countries. You can strike North Korea off that list, I presume.

Users will be able to use a SIM card on just about any unlocked mobile phone in order make use of Ultra Mobile’s nationwide GSM network. This would mean doing away with the need for calling cards as well as global texting add-ons which could run up to be a rather high amount at the end of the month, especially if you’re involved in a long distance relationship. Anyone else has any other recommendation for the best monthly unlimited plan in the US?

Jaguar Virtual Experience lets you experience unreleased vehicles

How can you experience the thrills of a new vehicle, especially one that has yet to hit the market? Why, this is where the magic of virtual reality comes in, and Jaguar has introduced the Virtual Experience digital showroom that will boast of high-resolution rendering of car models which are projected onto a display, showing off a nearly 1:1 ratio video representation of the actual ride. With the Virtual Experience, you are now able to explore the interior and exterior of the on-screen car using nothing but Minority Report inspired basic hand movements and gestures. All it takes are a few flicks of the wrist, and you will be able to open car doors, lift up the hood, check out the inside the car, and even decide which color suits your taste best. One thing it loses out on an actual vehicle in the showroom? The smell of a new car, which drives some men wild.

Debuting at the recent Paris Motor Show, the Virtual Experience showcased the new Range Rover F-Type there, and Jaguar intends to launch a similar software for users to experience the Virtual Experience digital showroom right in the comfort of their own homes. You down with that, or do you prefer to physically touch and feel something before making a purchase?
