Restaurants, Chefs Attempt To Move Forward After Hurricane Sandy

As we leave the worst of Sandy behind us, chefs and restaurateurs are starting to assess the damages at their place of business. Some are coming out fairly unscathed, and are open or plan to open shortly. Various local blogs such as Grub Street and Eater are updating lists on where to eat.

Unfortunately, not all restaurants have fared that well. We’ll be updating the slideshow below that chronicles tweets from people in the food world that are dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, whether than means getting deliveries up and running or assessing the damage of a restaurant.

Halloween Co-Parenting: Who Takes The Kids Trick-Or-Treating?

Who takes the kids trick-or-treating after a split?

For divorced parents, Halloween night can be a nightmare when it comes to scheduling visitation — the holiday is not as weighty as, say, Christmas or Hanukkah, but it’s not exactly Groundhog Day, either. (Plus, what parent wouldn’t want to escort their adorable costumed kiddo around the neighborhood?)

With that in mind, we asked our Facebook and Twitter communities to share with us the trick-or-treating arrangements they have with their exes. Click through to see what they had to say, then tell us about the Halloween plans you’ve worked out with your ex in the comments.

Nissan and Sony Confirm Second Season of Nissan GT Academy

We talked briefly about the last season of the Nissan GT Academy. This is a TV show where after three months of online competition 32 Gran Turismo online racers got the chance to fight it out at Comic-Con for the chance to drive a real race car for Nissan. Sony and Nissan have confirmed the series will be back for a second season starting Thursday, November 1st at 11:30 PM Eastern time on Spike TV.

It sounds like the format will be much the same as last year with online competitions in Gran Turismo in which the top racers get to go to England to compete in a number of activities including real track driving. It sounds like Sony and Nissan have been successful so far in picking people who can both play video games and drive well.

Season one winner Lucas Ordonez even won the P2 Class at the 24 hours of Le Mans 2011 in a Nissan prototype car. Four other GT Academy winners nailed a class victory in January after 24 Hours of Dubai driving a Nissan 370Z. This season’s episodes will be available online a week after they air on Spike TV.

Obama, Romney Place Ad Buys In Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON — With just days before the election, both presidential campaigns are engaging more fully in Pennsylvania, a state that once seemed — and very well still could be — solidly in President Barack Obama’s camp.

A Republican source passed along the following ad buy information on condition of anonymity.

Iran Orchestra Finale Rings Of Hard-line Pressure

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — It was a VIP audience for what was likely the last performance of the venerable Tehran Symphony Orchestra. Watching from the front row in late August was Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in what was seen as an endorsement from the ruling theocracy, which once tried to stamp out all music as a violation of Islamic values.

Just two months later, the musicians are out of work, funding has run dry and a nearly 80-year-old institution that survived wars, coups and the 1979 Islamic Revolution was declared Tuesday in an apparently irreversible “coma” by media.

Presidential Election 2012: Nasty Campaign Tactics Surface Ahead Of Decision Day

MIAMI — With a week to go until Election Day, the nasty campaign tactics are coming out.

Steve Ballmer hypes massive Windows 8 launch numbers at Build 2012

Steve Ballmer announced first of all today at Build 2012 that they’d sold 4 million Windows 8 upgrades in the three days since it’s been launched. It’s no small number, of course, and for the developers seeing this system for the first time here in its final form at the developer conference we’re experiencing here this week, it’s nothing but great! Laptop sales are up 20% over forecasts, said Ballmer, and by the words of Ballmer, it would appear that Microsoft is doing better than they expected they would – imagine that!

The enthusiasm was addictive at Build 2012 right at the dawn of Windows Phone 8, Ballmer making it clear that his journey from his arrival in the USA in 1988 spanned the gamut: Windows 95, 98, the PC going big, and more. The message was clear: Windows 8 is the next generation, and with Windows Phone 8 and Windows RT the wave is coming in strong. Ballmer makes it clear that it’s not just about one screen, not just about one version of the operating system – it’s about everything, all of the displays, all of the form factors.

This kind of experience is “alive with activity”, said Ballmer, and every screen is “alive and active with information” from the cloud, through Microsoft. With the launch of Windows Phone 8, said Ballmer, “the phone launches in full fruition into the Windows 8 family.” Ballmer’s talk was more than just a primer for the event, it was a sell-point for investors as well.

“If you want the best experience with your Windows Computer, you will own a Windows phone.” – Ballmer

It was time to build not just a single standard phone for everyone, Ballmer said of the original launch of Windows Phone, it was time to build something personal for each user. That’s one of the big points being driven home with Windows Phone 8 as well – as evidenced earlier this week with the big Windows Phone 8 launch event as well with Jessica Alba and friends.

Stick around our Microsoft hub as well as the Windows Phone 8 tag for more information on Windows Phone 8 than you’ll be able to handle all week!
