XBMC celebrates 10 years, latest build works in mainline PVR and Raspberry Pi support

First, we must congratulate the entire XBMC team on reaching the tenth anniversary of one of the project’s first betas hitting the internet, when Yet Another Media Play (YAMP) and Xbox Media Player joined forces to create something beautiful. It’s outlived the original console by far, powered other projects and spinoffs (Boxee, Plex, GeeXBox — just to name a few) and is still going strong. Just to show how much progress it’s making there’s a new monthly build that adds two features most will have to wait for XBMC 12 Frodo to try out. If you like to live on the edge, the September cycle includes mainline PVR support, which pulls in TV broadcasts thanks to PVR add-ons like MythTV or MediaPortal, as well as integrated support for the Raspberry Pi. Other tweaks include performance enhancements on Android, better picture zooming and rotation on mobiles and much, much more. Hit the source links for a full changelog and details on what dangers running a build hot off the presses may entail.

Twitter rumored to be interested in a video hosting service of their own

Twitter already has their own photo hosting service, so would a video hosting service be next on their list? It would not be a stretch of the imagination and according to recent rumors, that seems to be the case. This was revealed to the folks at AllThingsD by one of their sources who claims that Twitter was looking into a video hosting service of their own.

At the moment videos by YouTube and Vimeo can be linked via Twitter, although if Twitter launches their own video hosting service, there is a chance that both YouTube and Vimeo could be taking a hit. However given that YouTube is more or less the de facto video hosting service, and depending on what sort of features Twitter’s video hosting service offers, perhaps it might not have that huge of an impact after all. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled so until then, we suggest you take this with a grain of salt.

T-Mobile announces Nokia Lumia 810 in the US

If you were pretty impressed by what Nokia managed to do with Windows Phone 8 with the recent release of their Lumia smartphones, then you might want to cozy up to T-Mobile, as the mobile carrier in the US has just announced that they will be making available a variant of the Lumia 820 – calling it the Nokia Lumia 810 instead, sporting T-Mobile livery, no less. It does beg the question, how come there does not seem to be any variants of the higher end Nokia Lumia 920 instead? Having said that, let us take a closer look at what the Nokia Lumia 810 brings to the table.

The Nokia Lumia 810 is definitely a thing of beauty, there are no two ways about it for sure. It sports a minimalistic design and industry-leading navigation services, and will come packed with a sharp and gorgeous 4.3-inch OLED screen which boasts of a ClearBlack display. What is ClearBlack all about? Translated to English, it means that your colors will come in an eye-popping array, while blacks remain just as that – deep and dark. It also makes perfect sense if you are a fashionista and want to get the most out of the Lumia 810, as it comes with interchangeable charging shells which will arrive in black and, allowing you to juice up your device without having to mess around with the tangled web of modern day man known as wires.

Not only that, the Lumia 810 comes with an 8-megapixel camera that is accompanied by a Carl Zeiss lens. Should you want to perform video calls, fret not, as the Nokia Lumia 810 alone comes with a front-facing camera which enables you to hold video chats in crystal clear HD resolution. Of course, the smoothness of the video call depends on your network, so don’t blame the Lumia 810 for choppy video!

Preloaded software include Nokia Music, where you are able to enjoy free music that is streamed from a collection of more than 17 million tracks, meaning even the most picky person will still be able to find something that he or she likes. There is no word on pricing as at press time, but we will just wait for the end of the month, hoping that T-Mobile would have more concrete information by then.

Samsung Galaxy S III Mini details leak

Images and specifications of Samsung’s new Galaxy S III Mini, expected to be officially unveiled in Germany tomorrow, have leaked, and it’s not quite the powerhouse we had hoped for. According to MobileGeeks, the 4-inch S3 Mini (GT-I8190) will have a WVGA 800 x 480 Super AMOLED display and a 1.GHz dualcore STE U8420 processor, with a 5-megapixel camera on the back. OS is Android 4.1 Jelly Bean complete with Samsung’s own TouchWiz.

Inside, there’s said to be 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, along with a microSD slot compatible with up to 32GB cards. Connectivity includes WiFi a/b/g/n (2.4GHz/5GHz), Bluetooth 4.0, and microUSB, along with triband HSPA (900/1900/2100) and quadband GSM/EDGE.

Other tidbits include NFC for mobile payments and Android Beam, a 3.5mm headset, a 1,500 mAh battery, VGA-resolution front facing camera, and – going by the leaked images – a change to the touch-button design, with simple illuminated lines rather than full graphics as on the Galaxy S III. The whole handset is tipped to measure in at 121.55 x 62.95 x 9.85 mm, making it considerably smaller than the Samsung flagship.

According to the German site – which admits that some of the specs may not be 100-percent accurate, based on collating evidence from a number of sources – the phone will go on sale at €399 ($513) unlocked and SIM-free. It’s certainly not quite the flagship-but-smaller device we had hoped for, but it ticks more of the boxes than most 4-inch models around.

We’ll know more tomorrow, when Samsung officially launches the new Mini in Germany.

[Thanks Sascha!]

How Can We See Light? [Video]

Light is tricky. You probably know that we experience “light” by seeing it bounce off something before being absorbed into our eyes. But what about light itself? That’s much tougher, since in order to see the light, it has to be absorbed. Solving for this little Catch 22 won Serge Haroche the 2012 Nobel Prize in physics. More »

Western Digital unveils My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB and My Book 4TB external hard drives

Long gone are the days when 500GB of external storage was enough and if you believe that to be the case, Western Digital has taken the wraps off their new external hard drives, the My Book Thunderbolt Duo with 8TB of storage, and My Book with 4TB of storage, both of which are compatible with Mac and PCs although the former will come with a Thunderbolt cable that will allow for speedy data transfers, along with the possibility of daisy-chaining up to 6 of these hard drives bringing total storage to 48TB.

The My Book 4TB on the other hand will be USB 3.0 compatible which promises speeds of up to three times faster compared to USB 2.0. This model is also expected to be compatible with Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 when it is launched. The My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB will be priced at $850 and will come with a Thunderbolt cable for convenience, while the My Book 4TB will go for $250.

Samsung Galaxy S III Mini photo, specs and expected price leak in Germany

Samsung Galaxy S III Mini photo, specs and expected price leak in Germany

German site MobileGeeks has leaked further details about the new Mini version of the Galaxy S III — a device that Samsung only just confirmed this morning. As expected, we’re looking at a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and Jelly Bean-flavored TouchWiz, but if the source is accurate then most of the other specs are surprisingly budget: the screen resolution is a mere 800 x 480, the big bro’s quad-core Exynos processor has been replaced by a dual-core STE U8420 chip running at 1GHz, there’s 1GB of RAM, and the rear shooter maxes out at 5-megapixels. According to the leaked info, this all-round downgrade could lead to an expected price tag of 399 Euros ($510). No doubt we’ll have more clarity after tomorrow’s launch event.

Samsung Targets Europe With Smaller Flagship Phone: Galaxy S III Mini To Pack iPhone 5-Sized Screen

galaxys3

Samsung will unveil a smaller version of its flagship Galaxy SIII handset in Europe tomorrow – shrinking the screen from the 4.8 inches of its current flagship to an iPhone 5-sized 4 inches. Reuters is reporting the handset will be launched in Europe. There’s no word yet on whether Samsung plans to bring the device to the U.S.

The only other confirmed detail at this point is the name of the phone: the Galaxy S III mini. Samsung provided TechCrunch with the following statement confirming the planned launched

GALAXY S III mini will come with 4″ display and we are going to unveil the product tomorrow (Oct 11th). – JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications

We’ve asked Samsung for more details about the phone and will update with any response.

Engadget has some leaked info on the device (via a German site called MobileGeeks) which suggests the S III mini may be rather more mid-range than flagship — with an expected price of 399 euros ($510). While it will apparently have a 4 inch Super AMOLED display, the resolution will only be 800 x 480 (which would give a lowly pixel per inch rate of 233). The site also reckons Samsung is replacing the S III’s quad-core Exynos processor with an STE U8420 chip clocked at 1GHz. RAM is 1GHz, while the rear camera is reportedly 5 megapixels.

Reuters’ story quotes a Samsung spokeswoman citing Shin saying: “We think there’s strong demand for 4-inch screen models in Europe.” The company also told the news agency that the Galaxy S III mini would not be an entry-level model — contrary to the leaked info from MobileGeeks.

Early last month Saumsung released sales figures for the Galaxy S III – saying it had sold over 20 million units in the first 100 days of launch: 6 million in Europe, 4.5 million in Asia (ex. Korea), 4 million in North America and 2.5  million in Korea. The company is clearly hoping to maximise the reach of the device by adding a smaller version to appeal to people with smaller hands (and pockets).

Samsung is also not the only mobile maker to be thinking (a little bit) smaller when it comes to smartphone screen sizes. Motorola’s recent Droid Razr M packs a 4.3 inch screen — putting in the same ballpark as the iPhone, albeit still a smidge bigger. Perhaps the rampant screen inflation we’ve seen in the smartphone market in recent years has just about run its course (let’s hope so).

The Galaxy S III is just one of scores of phones in Samsung’s portfolio — which run the gamut from kid-friendly devices with very small and cramped screens all the way up to ‘phablet’ devices, its Galaxy Note range, with can pack screens in excess of 5 inches.

Offering an extensive range of different screen sizes (and price points) has been one of the ways Samsung has differentiated its Android-powered smartphones from other Android-based devices, such as HTC’s. It’s also a counterpoint to Apple’s strategy of offering just a handful of iPhone models with only very limited choice in screen size (and price).

LG Nexus 4 spotted in Carphone Warehouse listing

You know for sure just as that as a red sun rises, blood has been spilled last night – and the same somewhat applies when it comes to consumer electronics. If you start to hear more and more about an upcoming device, as well as see leaks of it appearing left and right, then chances are said device is on the fringe of an official release. Folks over at The Verge have managed to get an exclusive screenshot of the LG Nexus 4 being listed down in a Carphone Warehouse listing, and while that might just be a temporary placeholder or a red herring to throw off sniffing tech journalists, it remains to be seen.

It is most probably not that case though, as it does not make sense to list down two colors for the LG Nexus 4 – either black or white colors. The 4 in the LG Nexus 4 name might just be there as an indication of it being a 4th generation Nexus smartphone, or it could make up the entire name, but all of it should come to light in the near future as LG prepares to reveal their latest 1.5GHz quad-core powered smartphone.
