Windows 8 videos leak showing how to use the OS

We all know that Microsoft is set to launch Windows 8 later this month. The software giant will certainly be spending huge amounts of money on advertising trying to lure buyers to purchase the new version of the operating system or buy a new computer that has the operating system installed. If you’re curious about Windows 8, you may find these four new videos that have leaked interesting. They appear to be ads for the operating system.

These videos may be just the thing for people who aren’t interested enough in Windows 8 to download public version of the operating system to try on their own machine, but might upgrade down the line. Each of the four videos are slightly under a minute and show off different aspects of the operating system. The videos show touch interaction along with the operating system running on traditional laptops and desktops.

I doubt these are all the ads that will run for Windows 8. Odds are there will be ads for the Surface tablet and the Windows RT devices alone. I have to wonder about these videos being called ads. Ads to me mean commercials and typical commercials run 30 seconds, with some longer commercials spanning 60 seconds.

I can see these ads being stretched with opening or closing sequences to the 60-second mark. There’s also no confirmation that these are official Microsoft videos, but they certainly look official. Watch them all below and see what you think.

Nike+ FuelBand, SportWatch GPS add some new colors for the holidays

Nike FuelBand, SportWatch GPS add some new colors for the holidays

The good news is that Nike is adding some new colors to its Nike+ connected FuelBand and SportWatch GPS lines so your wristwear can more closely match your kicks all winter. While the original translucent limited edition Nike+ FuelBand Ice won’t be returning, at the end of October it will be available in new White Ice and Black Ice colors, with distribution expanded to more Nike stores in the US, Canada and UK. If you prefer GPS, precise timing and a multiplatform Nike+ Running app to LEDs, the TomTom-powered Nike+ SportWatch GPS is rolling out a new white/silver colorway. The bad news? If you were waiting for other updates, like a FuelBand with GPS, SportWatch that can pump out some MP3s while you run, FuelBand app for Android or really anything other than cosmetic changes, you’re out of luck. We wouldn’t let that get in the way of a workout however, check below for more details on each or return to customizing some NikeiD Lebron Xs — your choice.

Tesla-inspired Nerf gun

My first experience with how a Tesla coil works was not entirely scientific, as it was set in the battlefields of Command & Conquer, the unbelievable world where tanks are stopped by the presence of sandbags. Well, hacker Rob Flickenger sure has a better way of implementing the wonders of Tesla in the form of a Tesla coil gun which uses the Nerf gun as its starting point. Obviously, the end result is not something to be sneered at, but rather sinister looking to boot.

The Nerf gun’s plastic could not stand up to handle all the electrical power, and Flickenger had to recreate an exact replica with the use of aluminum and ABS plumbing pipe. Power will be derived from a 18-volt battery from his electric drill, while coils were hand-wound. Of course, with the amount of custom work being done here, it ended up being pretty expensive at $800 thereabouts, but this is truly a one-of-a-kind “weapon” to tote around. What would you give for this to be mass produced?

Nikon D800/D800E does not play nice with Eye-Fi X2 cards

Be warned! If you have always wanted to take the wireless image transfer route with your DSLR to your computer, then you might want to take note that both the Nikon D800 and the D800E will not be compatible with the Eye-Fi X2 card. Yes sir, the folks over at Eye-Fi recently released a statement, touting the incompatibility of the Eye-Fi X2 cards with the Nikon D800/D800E. The statement reads as follows :-

Eye-Fi engineering has found and confirmed a compatibility issue with the Eye-Fi card that impacts the use of Direct Mode in the Nikon D800. We are currently investigating an issue with the D800′s SD slot that appears to contribute to a lack of steady signal while the Eye-Fi card is in Direct Mode which makes the Direct Mode feature incompatible with the camera. The Nikon D800/D800e passes all other wireless network tests and is compatible with wireless transfers via a wireless router.

Well, there you have it, from the horse’s mouth.

More LG E960 pictures leak

Yesterday, we took a gander at what could possibly be the LG Nexus device, also known as the LG E960 if you are all for model numbers. Well, here is yet another image leak of the device front a front position (albeit with a different screen compared to what we saw yesterday), and if you hit the source link, you will be able to see what the LG E960 looks like from the back as well. Today’s serving does seem to be identical to the one that was seen yesterday, although this time round it lacks the protective, design-concealing outer case complete with a pattern on its back, and there are no physical buttons to speak of. Alleged specifications do seem to jive with earlier rumors, touting a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, an Adreno 320 GPU, an 8-megapixel camera, a display at 1184 × 768 resolution, 2GB RAM, and 8GB of internal memory.

There is a possibility of a 16GB version, but that remains locked under the rumor drawer for now. So far, no mention of NFC was made by recent approval documents, so we will have to continue waiting on that one as well.

Pandora talks payments to little-known working artists

We all know that the mainstream artists we hear played in heavy rotation on radio stations around the country make huge amounts of money each year. I’m sure I’m not alone in wondering if significantly lesser-known artists are able to make any money making music. According to some numbers that Pandora offered recently, many little known artists are able to make quite a comfortable living from Pandora alone.

Pandora wonders if any of us have heard of artists, including Donnie McClurkin, French Montana or Grupo Bryndis. Those artists have Amazon sales rankings of 4752, 17,000, and 183,187 respectively. With rankings like that it would be no surprise that most of us have never heard of anyone in that trio of artists. However, over the next 12 months Pandora says that is on track to pay performance fees to those three artists of $100,228, $138,567, and $114,192 respectively.

Those are impressive incomes for musicians odds are none of us know. Pandora says for over 2000 and other artists who are even lesser known it will pay out $10,000 each over the next 12 months. For over 800 artists who are more popular, Pandora will be paying out over $50,000 over the next 12 months. $50,000 is a comfortable middle-class income in many parts of the country.

If little-known artists are making this much money from Pandora alone, you might be wondering what megahit artists and groups are making. Pandora says that Coldplay, Adele, Wiz Khalifa, and Jason Aldean have already been paid out over $1 million each. Even more impressive is that Drake and Lil Wayne are close to $3 million annually each from Pandora alone.

Dragon captured: SpaceX’s first ISS supply mission is a success

The SpaceX Dragon capsule has been successfully grabbed by the International Space Station, marking the first time a private American space flight has run a supply mission to the orbiting platform. The crew of the ISS snatched Dragon out of orbit ahead of schedule, using the space station’s robotic arm to guide the capsule in after its careful approach.

The entire process took place with both ISS and Dragon roughly 252 miles above the western coast of the United States, with the 58 foot long robotic arm attaching to a special plate on the capsule itself. That then allows it to be pulled into place on the space station’s dock.

Inside, there’s roughly 882 pounds of cargo, predominantly new supplies for the astronauts and new scientific experiments. However, there also proved to be some space for fripperies; there’s ice cream and Silly Putty in there too.

“Thanks everyone at NASA and SpaceX for bringing her to us… and the ice cream” astronaut Suni Williams said in the moments after the successful grab. Williams will be responsible for bringing Dragon into its berth.

Monday’s launch didn’t go entirely to plan, despite Dragon reaching the ISS successfully. A “tiny explosion” of one of the nine engines on the Falcon rocket forced the remaining rockets to compensate; unfortunately it also meant that a satellite intended to be released, the Orbcomm OG2, did not get deployed.

The CRS-1 mission will be the first of several resupply flights SpaceX is contracted to perform for NASA over the next twelve months. You can rewatch the docking process at SpaceX’s site.
