German Police monitor Gmail, Skype, and Facebook via snooping malware

malwarealertEfficient Germany might have run into a hiccup – especially after the government allegedly let it be known (by accident, of course), that the police in Germany did state that they perform monitoring duties on Skype, Google Mail, MSN Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Facebook chat should the need arise. This raises a whole lot of ethical and privacy questions. Just how do the German police get around snooping on what their targets communicate over the mentioned email services as well as VoIP programs? Well, snooping malware is the answer of the day.

I guess when it comes to the collective safety of the whole nation being at stake, some actions are justified by select parties, although not everyone is going to agree to it. If you do not want to be snooped on, use a more traditional method of communicating then, what say you? This is also a good reminder that we can always do our part to encrypt communication channels whenever possible, and avoiding those that cannot be encrypted. You should not get hauled up to the local station by posting more cat videos though.

Leaked Ads Are a Reminder of How Slick Windows 8 Is [Video]

On the run up to the official launch on October 26th, these four leaked clips are part of Microsoft’s attempts to promote Windows 8. Whatever you think of the OS, there’s no denying that these ads, which show off the new UI and emphasize its touchscreen abilities, make it look damn slick. [Techit via Neowin via WPCentral] More »

iPad mini is Wi-Fi only (Rumor)

You can more or less say that Apple is for sure going to make quite the splash when it comes to the smaller tablet market, what with plenty of rumors going around concerning the 7.85” tablet from Cupertino known as the iPad mini at this point in time. Supposedly, Apple is preparing the iPad mini for launch, but what other things can we tell about the tablet that we do not yet know? There are new reports which has crept up that the iPad mini will be a Wi-Fi only tablet, thanks to folks over at The Guardian who cited unnamed “industry sources”.

What do you think of this latest rumor – does it hold water? Assuming that it is true, then it would mean that the iPad mini is not meant to be your main tablet, but rather, one that you just use around the home perhaps to disseminate information, or to watch a movie while laying a log. Do the rumored last minute design changes have anything to do with it being Wi-Fi only?

Nokia “Facehugger” face sensor is something right out of Giger’s imagination

I am quite sure that many of us can still remember the first time we watched Alien, where the Facehugger proved to be quite a monster, although not THE monster in the series. Well, what you see above is actually a research and development project that sports a slew of sensors, and each time it senses movement on your face, it will be able to measure your facial expressions (as though there was some way to measure emotions?). Of course, what we have gleaned from here hails from a Finnish translation, which is not the easiest language for translation bots to get the job done, so something factual might be misrepresented or missed out totally.

Touted to be useful in the world of sports as well as those who live with disabilities, this R&D project from Nokia might eventually take the text based communication route by reading one’s facial gestures, or perhaps use facial expressions to activate select features. There was also mention of future modifications being made for it to work on sunglasses, but that is enough speculation on our part for now. Anyone else thinks it somewhat resembles the spine bit of Dr. Octopus’ contraption in Spider-Man 2? Facehugger, you’re doing it wrong!

LG Nexus 4 tipped by Carphone Warehouse inventory screen

It’s not uncommon to see new smartphones and other gadgets tipped from simple text listings on inventory systems at various electronics retailers. Today a tip on a black and a white version of the LG Nexus 4 has surfaced from an inventory screen at UK mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse. Unfortunately, the only details tipped by the inventory listings are the two color options.

There have been several rumors floating around about a new LG Nexus device coming to market. However, in those previous rumors the Nexus 4 moniker wasn’t associated with the device. We assume that the “4″ in the product name is an indication of the screen size along the lines of the Nexus 7.

The last time we talked about the new Nexus smartphone rumor was at the beginning of the month. At the time, the new smartphone was tipped for sometime within the next few months. Indications are that the Nexus 4 will be based on the Optimus G.

Rumored specifications for the Optimus G have pointed to a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 768. The device is also rumored to use a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and run Android Jelly Bean. We will certainly be on the lookout for more details on the Nexus 4 in the days and weeks ahead.

DaVinci 3D debuts Auto Stereoscopic 3DTV

When it comes to 3DTVs, chances are the name DaVinci 3D might not ring a bell amongst us, as we would most probably be far more familiar with the likes of Samsung, LG and Sony. Well, this has not stopped DaVinci 3D from working on a 3DTV of their own, finally debuting their Auto Stereoscopic 3DTV which they claim to be the first no-glasses “real” 3DTV. We find that claim to be pretty much baseless, considering how other manufacturers have already beat them to it like the Toshiba Regza GL1 – which is 2-year old technology, by the way.

DaVinci 3D Inventor and CEO Stephen Blumenthal, said, “DaVinci 3D has the only Broadcast Quality, glasses free AS3D platform featuring viewer adjustable depth controls, endless viewing comfort, and technically is a seamless replacement for HDTV. By marrying classical 3D optics with Math based PC processing, we have created the next generation in 3DTV.”

There are plenty of other unknown quantities here, that is does seem to reek more of strong marketing than anything else. What purpose does the use of “broadcast quality” serve over here? So many claims, but how many of them are legit? Certainly it should not be the first of its kind in the market. [Press Release]

Microsoft’s Ballmer teases more hardware: “Fundamental shift” underway

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has heaped extra emphasis on the company offering hardware rather than just software, describing “a fundamental shift” that could pave the way for more own-brand gadgets like Surface. Writing in a letter to shareholders, Ballmer suggested that “there will be times when we build specific devices for specific purposes” and portraying Microsoft “as a devices and services company.” The comments are unlikely to deter increasing rumors that Microsoft plans to launch more Windows 8 hardware of its own, and potentially a Windows Phone 8 range.

‘Last year in this letter I said that over time, the full value of our software will be seen and felt in how people use devices and services at work and in their personal lives. This is a significant shift, both in what we do and how we see ourselves — as a devices and services company” Ballmer writes. “It impacts how we run the company, how we develop new experiences, and how we take products to market for both consumers and businesses. The work we have accomplished in the past year and the roadmap in front of us brings this to life.”

Microsoft surprised its OEM partners with the unveil of Surface earlier this year, a pair of tablets – one running Windows RT, the other Windows 8 and adding in extra digital pen functionality – described as delivering the company’s vision for what a Windows slate should be. Although publicly welcomed as a vote of confidence in the platform, manufacturers are believed to have privately resented Microsoft stepping into their territory, particularly with the minimal notice the company gave about Surface’s launch.

Until that point, Microsoft had been content to leave phone and PC hardware direction pretty much up to OEMs, although it took a more directive approach with “appliance” style devices like Xbox. Wading into tablets, however, potentially paves the way for more Microsoft-branded hardware, something Ballmer hints at.

“There will be times when we build specific devices for specific purposes, as we have chosen to do with Xbox and the recently announced Microsoft Surface” the CEO points out. “In all our work with partners and on our own devices, we will focus relentlessly on delivering delightful, seamless experiences across hardware, software and services. This means as we, with our partners, develop new Windows devices we’ll build in services people want.”

Microsoft has repeatedly denied it has plans to launch its own Windows Phone 8 smartphones, instead selecting HTC’s new range as its “signature” handsets for the updated platform’s promotion. Nonetheless, there’s more possibility than ever that such a strategy could change if the company believes manufacturers need some Nexus-style motivation to take Windows Phone in the direction Microsoft wants.

GoPro iOS app is finally available, adds live viewfinder and remote controls for action cameras

GoPro iOS app is finally available, adds live viewfinder and remote controls for action cameras

GoPro owners have had a long wait, but the company’s iOS remote app (Android “coming soon”) is finally available and ready to work for those possessing both an HD Hero2 camera and WiFi BacPac accessory. While the hardware will cost you the app itself is free, and adds capabilities including remote control of all of the camera’s settings, monitoring of battery life and storage space, date / time sync with your mobile device, live remote preview so you can see what you’re shooting in real time and also access to GoPro’s Photo of the Day / Video of the Day channels. Along with the app, GoPro is releasing the Protune firmware update that will let cameras record at a higher 35Mbps bitrate, 24fps and adjust the video for a different cinematic look.

Still, it is a v1 release and while our reader Khena reports it’s stable, it does have some rough edges. Currently you can’t access or view any recordings already stored on the camera or control more than one camera, although GoPro says those features are coming, while other gripes include delay between the camera and the app’s “live” viewfinder that can be as much as five seconds and the inability to preview the ProTune settings while recording. That’s a bit frustrating after the wait for the app to arrive, but in an action camera market suddenly teeming with competition, they may be enough to keep GoPro fans from switching to another any time soon. Check out a quick tutorial video and press release after the break, or hit the link below to grab the app from iTunes (make sure your camera and BacPac are updated to the latest software first.)

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
