Lunar robot Polaris intends to mine water

Finding water on another planet might be hailed by some to be one of the biggest discoveries of mankind, but they are forgetting that it takes far more than just the presence of water to support theories that there is life outside of earth. Well, a spinoff from the Carnegie Mellon University, Astrobotic Technology, has finished building their full-size prototype of a solar-powered robot that was specially designed with just one mission in life – to look for water and ice at the moon’s poles. Known as Polaris, it will carry a drill in order to bore a hole that is one meter deep into the lunar surface, where it will then get to work even in the low-light conditions of the poles.

Touted to be the “first rover developed specifically for drilling lunar ice”, the whole idea of searching for such water would be to look for a potential source that could eventually furnish future expeditions with precious water, fuel and oxygen. A trio of large solar arrays will help keep the Polaris juiced, capturing light from low on the horizon while it continues with its drilling work.

Logitech Touch Mouse T620 and Zone Touch Mouse T400 announced

What you see above is the Logitech Touch Mouse T620, where it was specially designed to deliver a full touch-surface for fluid navigation with the Windows 8 operating system that is bound to be released later this month. It is rather similar in its workings to the touchpad, providing you with the adequate freedom to gesture wherever your fingers rest on the mouse, never mind if they are on the edges, for a more natural and intuitive feeling, and this will include horizontal and vertical scrolling, and app switching. Your hand should take to the Logitech Touch Mouse T620 in a jiffy, and using it for hours should not result in any adverse effects.

As for the Logitech Zone Touch Mouse T400, it will be more than the usual mouse, allowing you to access popular elements of the operating system in a quick and easy manner. Sporting a glass touch-surface which was specially designed for smooth horizontal and vertical scrolling with your fingers, you are able to perform clicks anywhere on the front of the touch zone, in order to access the Windows 8 Start Screen directly. The Logitech Touch Mouse T620 and Logitech Zone Touch Mouse T400 will retail for $69.99 and $49.99, respectively. [Press Release]

Logitech Wireless Rechargeable Touchpad T650 prepares for invasion

Who would have thought that a touchpad would eventually come with batteries one day? Logitech did, which is why they have just announced the Logitech Wireless Rechargeable Touchpad T650 that was specially designed right out of the box to play nice with the Windows 8 touch interface. Upon unboxing, you will find a large, ultra-smooth glass touch-surface which supports Windows 8 gestures, and it ought to do its part to make sure that navigation among windows is performed in a jiffy, while making sure that there is adequate space for your fingers to roam around.

You can also opt to left- or right-click anywhere on the surface of the touchpad, while an embedded sensor ensures that precise tracking is the order of the day, delivering fast and fluid navigation.

SpaceX Dragon nears ISS for resupply docking today

SpaceX‘s Dragon capsule is less than 250 meters from the International Space Station, as the first private resupply mission prepares to dock in just a few hours time. A view from the capsule’s camera, shared by NASA, shows the ISS, which will use a robotic arm to snatch Dragon from orbit and guide it in to dock at 7:22am EDT. The Expedition 33 team will use LIDAR and thermal imagers to track Dragon’s approach.

On the ISS itself, meanwhile, astronaut Sunita Williams has been shown running through the robotic arm controls in preparation for the mission. ”Dragon slayers! Practiced approach & grapple, set up & tested the comm system last week for today’s snare of the #Dragon. Wish us luck!” Williams tweeted earlier today.

The capsule is the first of a series of resupply missions SpaceX is contracted to undertake for NASA, replacing the regular flights of the now-decommissioned Space Shuttles to the International Space Station. Launched on Monday, and making it to the orbiting platform despite a catastrophic engine failure, Dragon contains around 1,000 of cargo including Silly Putty and ice cream.

After it has been unloaded, the ISS crew will pack the Dragon capsule with a return load of spent experiments and other unneeded kit, and return it to Earth. SpaceX is already working on a second version of Dragon which will accommodate human passengers.

You can watch the docking process at nasa.gov/ntv.

OnLive assets sell for only $4.8 million

OnLive launches a cloud-based gaming company that many people expected to change the face of gaming away from consoles to Internet streamed video games. The company promised more than just casual games such as Tetris or Farmville. OnLive streamed full versions of many popular PC games directly to your PC including FPS titles and more. The problem for OnLive was that subscriber numbers never lived up to the hype the company generated at launch.

Ultimately, OnLive went bankrupt and fired most of its employees a few months ago. Documents have surfaced that show assets owned by OnLive, including patents and intellectual property, were purchased by a company called Lauder Partners for only $4.8 million. That price is approximately $14 million less than OnLive assets were said to be worth.

The letter was written by Joel Weinberger, the CEO of Insolvency Services Group, the company tasked with handling the sale of OnLive assets. The letter was confirmed to be legitimate by Insolvency Services Group legal representatives. OnLive said of the low-priced sale, “When planned financing didn’t work out, the company was left with few options.”

The estimated worth of OnLive’s assets was $18.7 million. Lauder Partners seems to have gotten themselves quite a deal. If OnLive is able to transform itself into a service that can be successful and profitable remains to be seen. OnLive was acquired by Lauder Partners in August after it formed into a new company and laid off the majority of its staff.

“Had the sale to the buyer not taken place, the assignee would have been left with inadequate capital to fund the significant costs to preserve and market OnLive’s patents and other intellectual property, thus greatly reducing expected recoveries essentially to those of a forced piecemeal auction,” said Weinberg in the letter.

Google to introduce in-app subscription trial feature for apps

While there might be trials for app purchases, there hasn’t really been any trial subscriptions which means that if you wanted to see if a digital magazine or newspaper is right for you, you will need to actually subscribe to find out – assuming the free version wasn’t enough to go by. Well the good news for users and digital content providers is that Google has announced that they have added the option for free trials for in-app subscriptions. (more…)

HTC, NASA to launch Nexus One into space in 2013 as part of PhoneSat program

Okay, this definitely won’t be the first time HTC’s own Nexus handset will be experiencing a trip that most of us won’t ever have the chance to replicate. But in 2013 the Nexus One will travel deeper into the void than it’s ever been before. As it was in 2010, the upcoming Nexus One launch plan is also part of NASA’s nano-satellite-building program (aka PhoneSat) and, according to HTC, this will mark the culmination of years of intensive testing — which consisted of putting the former Android flagship through thermal-vacuum chambers, extreme vibration tests and high-altitude balloon flights. The Taiwanese phone maker didn’t specify when exactly the Nexus One’s out-of-this-world adventure will take place, but we do know the newfangled One X+ is already being touted as a potential candidate to climb aboard a Jupiter-bound spaceship in the coming future.
