ConEd Explosion During Hurricane Sandy Rocks Manhattan’s Lower East Side (VIDEO)

An explosion at a substation belonging to New York utility company Consolidated Edison (ConEd) rocked Manhattan’s East Village at approximately 9 p.m. on Monday night.

The blast occurred on 14th Street near the bank of the East River and plunged much of lower Manhattan into darkness as Superstorm Sandy battered the city with winds and tidal surges.

ConEd also took parts of its grid offline during the storm. In addition, flooding and downed power lines knocked out power for many in the city. The company said in a press release that 670,000 customers are without power in New York City and Westchester County. During a press conference Tuesday morning, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that as many as 750,000 residents were without power.

Hurricane Sandy Causes ‘Today,’ ‘GMA’ To Cancel Halloween Specials

Halloween has been canceled — on the morning shows, at least.

Both “Today” and “Good Morning America” announced Tuesday that they are not going ahead with their annual Halloween costume specials due to the ongoing aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Both shows — and especially “Today” — have become well-known for their elaborate Halloween programs. Last year, the “Today” team dressed up as the royal family, for instance.

ASUS reports Q3 2012 earnings

ASUS just posted its third quarter earnings for this year, and the company ended up recording its largest quarterly profit in more than four years. During the third quarter, the company earned a net income of $229.1 million, which is up 43% from the same time last year. ASUS posted a total Q3 revenue of $3.8 billion.

The company’s laptop and tablet shipments in the third quarter were up from last quarter. They ended up shipping 5 million laptops (up 14% from Q2), and also shipped 2.3 million tablets, which is up by a whopping 300% compared to last quarter when ASUS only shipped 800,000 tablets. That’s quite a big increase to say the least.

According to research firm Gartner, ASUS also had the biggest rise in PC market share during Q3. They now have a 7.3% market share and the company’s shipments rose 12%. To compare, other PC makers, such as HP, Dell, and Acer, all reported lower shipments and market share for the third quarter period.

ASUS is expecting another big quarter in Q4 2012. They’re expecting their laptop shipments to go up 10% from the third quarter to 5.5 million units. They’re also expecting tablet shipments to go up as well. They’re hoping to ship 2.6 million tablets, which would be up 13% from the third quarter.

Daniel Klein: ‘Travels With Epicurus’ Explores The Best Path To A Fulfilled Old Age

In his early 70s, author Daniel Klein saw his peers taking up jogging, studying new languages and wearing hormone patches to charge their libidos. Klein already harbored a few misgivings about the frantic striving of the “new old age” when a trip to the dentist prompted an epiphany.

“He said I had to get these implants over the course of a year [or] I would look older with denture plates …and my teeth would pop out once in a while,” Klein recalled. “And I thought, ‘what do I care if have a goofy old man smile? I am an old man!’”

Klein returned to the Greek village and philosophers he has visited for decades to discover authentic ways of aging. In his funny and wry account, “Travels with Epicurus: A Journey to a Greek Island in Search of a Fulfilled Life,” he concludes that old age is a privilege to be savored, rather than a disease to be cured or a condition to be denied.

ARM’s Cortex-A50 chips promise 3x performance of current superphones by 2014, throw in 64-bit for good measure

ARM's CortexA50 chips promise 3x performance of current superphones by 2014, throw in 64bit for good measure

We knew this was coming, not least because someone let the cat out of the bag (or at least a paw) last night. Nevertheless, it’s only today that we’re getting the full picture of ARM’s “clean sheet” v8 architecture, and you know what? It’s pretty astounding. Top billing goes to the Cortex-A57, which is said to deliver “three times the performance of today’s top smartphones” without guzzling any additional power. Alternatively, the chip could be designed to deliver the same performance as a current smartphone or tablet but make the battery last five times as long — which would make that Surface RT just about five times nicer than it is already. How’s all this possible? Read on for more.

Ballmer: four million Windows 8 upgrades in four days

Image

Greetings in beautiful, gray Redmond, WA. What better time to kick off year’s Build event at the Microsoft campus than four days after the launch of Windows 8? CEO Steve Ballmer started the developer-centric event off with a nice little number: four million. According to the enthusiastic exec, that’s the number of Windows 8 upgrades MS has seen in the four days since launch — and there’s certainly a lot of excitement around the operating system this tent full of developers.

France’s Government Gets Anti-Sexism Lessons

PARIS — French government ministers will be given anti-sexism lessons, in the wake of one minister’s comments suggesting women couldn’t handle technical work.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has asked the French equality ministry to set up a series of 45-minute workshops where politicians are given examples of sexism in daily life and, with the aid of slide-shows, taught how to avoid sexist stereotypes in political communication.

Live at Microsoft Build 2012 for the dawn of Windows Phone 8!

This week Microsoft is holding their yearly developer conference with Windows Phone 8 at the forefront right here at the start of the mobile OS, but the desktop OS Windows 8 and tablet OS Windows RT as well – and we’re here all week to bring it to you live! Build is essentially the Microsoft equivalent of Google’s own Google I/O and Apple’s WWDC – it’s Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and Windows RT’s turn now. This Build is unique in that it comes immediately following the release of Microsoft’s new fave

Jordan Rudess, keyboardist for the musical group Dream Theater stood on stage at the beginning of the first keynote this week to show off some apps that his group developed. He’s not just a musician, he’s a developer as well. Using a Surface RT and a giant Lenovo touch-capable All-in-One PC to make it happen with Windows 8, he set the tone for the whole conference: multi-touch, multi-use, cross-platform action. His app Tachyon (which you may have heard of before) brings on a lovely musical bit of madness for the masses.

We’re expecting not just one whole heck of a lot of new information from Microsoft this week other than developer-specific details. If you’re interested in the guts of the system, [stay tuned to our Microsoft hub.] It’s time to see what Microsoft has in the insides of this next-generation release!

Also have a peek at the timeline below to see some more Windows Phone 8 action as it came on down over the past couple of weeks. This weekend is the big drop internationally, and Microsoft stores across the earth will be bringing you every phone in every color in the very near future – get pumped up to the max! And don’t forget to check out our full Windows Phone 8 review as well!
