Visceral Games reportedly working on new MOBA title

Multiplayer online battle arena games – “MOBA” for short – are all the rage these days, and it looks like Dead Space developer Visceral Games is ready to get in on the action. IGN has discovered a series of Visceral job postings on the Gamasutra jobs board that all suggest the developer is looking to craft a free-to-play MOBA title. The game would presumably be released as part of EA’s Play4Free division, which means that it could launch on social platforms like Facebook.

The first job post in this round up calls for a Global Community Manager who has an “unhealthy passion for MOBA games,” while another is seeking a Game Character Designer who has “work experience on MOBA, Action RTS, Action RPG, or Related Genres.” Not enough evidence for you? Visceral didn’t stop there, also putting up a posting for a Lead Multiplayer Map Designer who is familiar not only with multiplayer gaming, but also with games in the action/shooter genre.

So, it seems that Visceral will soon ramp up production on a new MOBA shooter title. Electronic Arts has already hit the free-to-play scene hard, so it isn’t much of a surprise that it wants to put Visceral to work on a MOBA game. That’s especially true with all of the hype currently surrounding DOTA 2 and Blizzard All-Stars (which was formerly known as Blizzard DOTA).

Of course, we probably shouldn’t hope for this game to arrive soon, as Visceral’s first priority will be finishing up Dead Space 3, which isn’t due out until February 2013. That’s still about four months away, and Visceral may not want to get to work on this mysterious MOBA title until Dead Space 3 is finished. Then again, the studio could put these new hires to work straight away, so it might launch sooner than we’re expecting. In either case, we’ll be keeping our eyes out for more details, so keep checking back here with us at SlashGear for additional information.

Google Play in-app subscriptions get free trial option

Google Play in-app subscriptions get free trial option

In-app subscriptions found their way to Google Play this May, and now the folks in Mountain View are letting Android developers offer them with free trials. In order to make use of the freebie spans, you’ll have to fork over your payment information to Page and Co. as if it were a run-of-the-mill purchase, but you won’t get hit with the monthly fee until the dev-determined trial stretch is over. Developers looking to serve up samples of their episodic content can set a trial period that’s at least seven days or longer right within the Developer Console, which means they can add the gratis option or alter its length without having to modify their apps. If the duration of the gratis subscription is changed, the tweak will only apply to new subscribers.

Samsung partners with Spotify, brings streaming music to its 2012 SmartTVs

Europeans who have been pining for a(nother) way to bring Spotify into their living rooms can rest easy, now that Samsung is on the case. The pair have teamed up to bring 18 million tracks to Sammy’s 2012 E-Series Smart TVs with a new app designed for the platform. The software will arrive later this year, with existing Premium users finding their playlists already syncing, while those new to the service will be offered a short free trial to coax them into signing up. If you’ve yet to make an investment in one of the displays, the company is also planning to add the functionality onto its Blu-Ray players and Home Theater systems in short order.

Apple Maps Accidentally Revealed a Top Secret Military Base [Apple Maps]

Uh oh. Apple Maps, for all of its blurry, melting world faults, was actually a little too clear in one area: it revealed a top-secret, $1.23 billion ultra-high-frequency radar of Taiwan for everyone to see. Um, that’s not good. More »

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 9, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening, everyone. Earlier today, we found out that Samsung may be planning a Nexus 10 tablet, complete with a resolution to give the third-gen iPad a run for its money. ZTE gave its response to yesterday’s allegations that it may be helping the Chinese government spy on the US, and Apple started shipping the fifth-generation iPod Touch to the first customers today. We heard that the rumored 32GB Nexus 7 variant might be replacing the 16GB model, and speaking of the Nexus 7, it received Android 4.1.2 today, which adds a much-needed landscape mode.

NASA’s Curiosity rover has scooped up its first “handful” of Martian soil, while Verizon announced today that it will have 4G LTE in 418 US markets by the end of the day on October 16. Not only did Samsung announce the Galaxy Music smartphone today, but it also started teasing a “groundbreaking” Windows 8 device reveal for October 15. Microsoft has released a Windows 8 update ahead of its launch at the end of this month, while we heard that Windows Phone 8 pre-orders might open up on October 21.

Despite Apple’s best efforts, its Lightning chip has been cloned, and today the company was said to be in a long-running relationship with a carbon fiber manufacturer. We got to take a look at some snazzy new iPad Mini renders today, and were told that BlackBerry 10 might not launch until sometime in March 2013. Today was the day that Felix Baumgartner was supposed to attempt his record-breaking skydive, but at the last minute Red Bull had to pull the plug on the mission due to bad weather, with tomorrow’s jump called off for the same reason. Firefox 16 was released today, and Amazon filed a new patent for an online haggling system.

Ice Cream Sandwich finally hit the Motorola Atrix 2 today, while Jelly Bean was arriving on Galaxy S IIIs in Korea. Tens of thousands of Chrome users have fallen victim to a bogus adware app claiming to be Rovio’s Bad Piggies, and Valve has invited players to fill out playtest surveys for a chance to come into the studio to test new games and hardware. Gearbox released the Mechromancer DLC for Borderlands 2 a week early today, and the Humble Bundle is back, only this time it doesn’t feature any games. Skype users are being plagued by a trojan, so if you use the service a lot, it’s probably a good idea to check out our post to see what you can do to stop it from infecting your computer.

Finally tonight, we have a pair of original posts for your to read through. Chris Davies tells us why a Nexus 10 won’t solve Google’s problem with getting developers to make apps aimed at Android tablets, while Chris Burns has given us a review of the Acer TravelMate P243 notebook. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Lenovo Updates The ThinkPad Tablet & Laptop Hybrid With The ThinkPad Twist, An $849 12.5″ Ultrabook

Screen Shot 2012-10-09 at 7.38.01 PM

Lenovo is apparently not convinced of the post-PC lingo, with its latest series of announcements. The good old ThinkPad brand is used once again for another model, the ThinkPad Twist. It is a 12.5″ tablet/laptop hybrid powered by a third-generation Intel Core i7 processor.

The mechanism is different from the IdeaPad Yoga models. In that case, you flip the screen horizontally before “closing” the laptop with the display on the top. Let’s hope it’s sturdy enough for business-oriented users.

The ThinkPad Twist will sport a 320/500 GB hard drive, or optionally a 128 GB SSD. At 12.5 inches and with a 1366 x 768 resolution, the display doesn’t look as appealing as the IdeaPad Yoga 13′s.

The two USB ports will be USB 3.0-compatible, and an Ethernet port will still be available for those who still rely on the technology. Other tech specs include up to 8 GB of RAM and up to seven hours of battery life.

At the press event, Lenovo stated that they want to become the No. 1 PC maker in the world. We’ll see if they will achieve that status with those new models as the ThinkPad Twist will come out in October.
