Hate Politics? Then You’ll Love Unpolitic.me on Your Browser

With the elections nearing, it should come as no surprise that most of the people in your network are talking about politics and holding impromptu debates on Facebook. That is, if you live in the United States.

You could swear off Facebook until the elections are over. You could de-activate and spend your time doing more productive things. Or you could just get Unpolitic.me and continue wasting your time on the social network while blocking out anything that’s related to politics.

unpolitic me
Unpolitic.me is an extension for Chrome that automatically detects and blocks out politics-related content with pictures of adorable cats. How great is that?

The extension is developed by the same group of people who came up with Unbaby.me, which blocks out baby-related stuff that people in your network are posting.

Grand Theft Auto V promo artwork confirms spring 2013 release [UPDATE]

Rockstar Games is still staying quiet about a release date for their upcoming Grand Theft Auto V title, but a UK game retailer seemed to have accidentally posted up a photo of some promotional artwork of the game that had “Spring 2013″ printed on the materials. The retailer originally tweeted the photo, but the tweet has since been removed.

All we’ve seen of Grand Theft Auto V so far is just a bunch of screenshots, with no other details to go along with them. UK retailer GAME tweeted out to its followers that Grand Theft Auto V was now available for pre-order and posted a photo of some promotional artwork of the game. GTAV isn’t officially available for pre-order just yet (or so Rockstar hasn’t given the thumbs up yet), so GAME ended up deleting the tweet, but their pre-order page is still live with a release date “TBC-2013.”

UPDATE: Rockstar Games has officially announced Spring 2013 as the release window for Grand Theft Auto V on its website.

However, come December, we’ll surely find out more info about the game. The December issue of Game Informer will have Grand Theft Auto V on the front cover and it will be the issue’s main story for the month. The issue will no doubt have even more screenshots, and it also might be the time where the developer announces pre-orders for the game.

The leaked promo materials don’t just show us the release window, but they also show off some artwork that we haven’t seen yet, such as a guy sitting on a four-wheeler as well as a couple of guys holding machine guns with gas masks on their faces. Could it be that we may see more weapons and possibly chemical warfare component in the GTAV? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Google Play closing in on Apple’s store with 700K apps, says Bloomberg

Google Play store racks up 700K apps

Amidst all the Nexus excitement from yesterday, Google just hit the 700,000 Android app milestone in its Play Store, according to Bloomberg. That would put it near par with Apple, who announced just last month that its App Store hit that same figure. Like Cupertino’s iOS shop, Play (which started off as the Android Market) has been peddling its robot wares since 2008, though the store opened several months after Apple’s. Google may have been set to trumpet the new figure during the Nexus launch yesterday as they did last June at I/O, but a certain Sandy may have wrenched that plan — so, we’re still waiting for a formal announcement.

Nokia Music gets upgraded for Lumia 920 and Lumia 820: Equalizer, Dolby support, Facebook connectivity

Now Windows Phone 8 has arrived with Xbox Music in tow, what’s next for Nokia Music? Well, at a press briefing this week in London, it told the assembled tech press that its still going — and Nokia’s even adding features. The music service is apparently continuing to expand, with new tracks being added weekly — Nokia’s mix radio currently houses 338 curated mixes in the UK alone, across pretty broad selection of music genres. And yep, there was a mention of K-Pop.

New functionality improvements include an immediate share-to-Facebook option, while the Gig Finder feature nestled within the music app picks up improved search skills, capable of checking specific venues and areas, along with the ability to buy tickets for — and get directions to — future gigs. The app’s new audio equalizer has 18 presets while you’ll also be able to tweak the seven-channel system to your own personal preference. On top of that, Dolby tech is also embedded in, with Dolby headphone (a signal processing upgrade) in attendance on both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. Nokia also affirmed that the upgraded app will be included on its hardware that gets bumped up to version 7.8. We’re just about to get our review model and will give the new features a full rundown as soon as we can.

LG Spectrum 2 made official for Verizon, brings Optimus LTE II to the US for $100

LG Spectrum 2 made official for Verizon, brings Optimus LTE II to US for $100

Hints that LG would bring the Optimus LTE II to Verizon have persisted since the spring, which almost led us to wonder if the smartphone was still coming: not to fear, as it’s finally here under the Spectrum 2 badge. Other than the expected switch-ups in navigation keys and the mix of both CDMA with global GSM roaming, the design will feel very familiar to anyone who’s been on a trip to South Korea lately. The Spectrum 2 preserves the 4.7-inch AH-IPS display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, 8-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage and support for wireless charging for those who buy a charging pad. We’re also expecting a relatively light tweak of the software that keeps it running Android 4.0 for now, with LG’s support for Tag+ stickers and QuickMemo being the standouts. We do wish we were looking at a quad-core Optimus G instead. For the moderate $100 post-rebate price, however, we’ll take the two fewer processor cores — especially when the Spectrum 2 is already on sale online and should be in retail stores sometime in the next few weeks.

Nokia Music update ushers in the Lumia 920 and 820 with Artist Profiles

This week when the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 hit the market with Windows Phone 8, you’ll be seeing updates to Nokia Music as well. This update will bring a variety of new features including no less than Dolby Headphone support – that’s high definition beat blasts for your eardrums like never before! Also included in this update to Nokia Music is full Artist Profile Pages – you’ll be able to get more information on the artists you love than you ever though you’d have wanted!

Each Artist Profile page will include a biography, Twitter messages from their official Twitter page, and upcoming gigs across the planet. These Artist Profile pages also include new Nokia mixes that can be triggered from one of their tracks directly from the page the track is on. This makes it easier than ever to get the lovely precision-collected sets of music you want!

UPDATE: Nokia has confirmed that this update will also be pushed to devices running Windows Phone 7.8 as well – good deal!

Worth noting is that Nokia Music only exists on Nokia devices at the moment and for the foreseeable future. At the moment it appears that this update will be hitting the Lumia 920 and 820 first, but no word has been confirmed on whether or not previous Lumia devices will be able to work with these new features.

The Lumia 920 and 820 will be in stores this weekend internationally and soon – very soon – here in the USA on carriers galore as well. We’ll be taking closer looks at the 920 and 820 in addition to the different carrier iterations of the phones in turn. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more Windows Phone 8 action as well!

MetroPCS posts up Q3 2012 earnings

MetroPCS might just be a smaller regional carrier compared to T-Mobile, who is trying to acquire MetroPCS, but the regional carrier posted up its third quarter earnings for this year, and it looks like the company is doing fairly okay. MetroPCS posted a massive net profit of $193 million this quarter, which is $44 million more than the carrier made last quarter.

However, MetroPCS lost just over 300,000 subscribers during the third quarter, but a combination of money-saving tactics and investments in securities earned the company a total revenue of $1.26 billion. MetroPCS reported that they have just under nine million customers, and one million of those customers subscribe to the carrier’s LTE plans.

The network has lost just over 500,000 customers in the last six months, but CEO Roger Linquist said that next quarter will be when the carrier “re-energizes” its subscriber growth at the expense of their bottom line. Revenue growth compared to this time last year is minimal, with a total revenue of $1.21 billion during Q3 2011.

However, the carrier netted only $69 million last year, with a total nine-month net income of $210 million, compared to this year’s $363 million. MetroPCS sure knows how to save cash this time around, and with the company’s focus on re-energizing its subscriber growth, they could be in for an ever better Q4.

iPad (4th Gen) Outruns The iPhone 5 In An Early Benchmark, Listed With 1.4GHz Dual-Core CPU, 1GB Of RAM

ipad4benches

The new new iPad hits stores Friday, but an early Geekbench benchmark reveals some interesting details. Apparently, at least per this one-off report, the 4th generation iPad uses a dual-core ARMv7 CPU with 1GB of RAM. Not surprisingly, this results in benchmark scores better than those earned by the iPhone 5.

The iPad (4th gen) and iPhone 5 seem to share the same amount of RAM; the CPU configuration is slightly different between Apple’s two flagship devices. The iPhone 5 uses an ARMv6 CPU running at 1.3GHz, which is better suited for a smartphone-type device. Although it’s not clear at this point which ARMv7 is inside the iPad (4th gen), the benchmarks speak for themselves: it’s more powerful.

The latest iPad thoroughly trumps the previously called New iPad, which runs a dual-core A5X running at 1GHz. The 3rd generation iPad scored 791 in Geekbench where the 4th generation earned a 1757, besting the iPhone 5′s 1571 score. Since the iPad mini uses a dual-core A5 of unknown clock speed, its score will likely be around that of the 3rd generation iPad.
