Romney’s Secrecy: Did He Get Away With It?

In January, in a South Carolina debate just before that state’s primary, Newt Gingrich hit Mitt Romney hard for releasing barely any of his tax returns: “Look, he’s got to decide and the people of South Carolina have to decide. But if there’s anything in there that is going to help us lose the election, we should know it before the nomination. And if there’s nothing in there, why not release it?” The audience cheered, and when Gingrich proceeded to trounce Romney at the polls the following Saturday, voters told me that Romney’s secrecy about his tax returns was part of their decision–they didn’t necessarily care what tax rate Romney paid, but they didn’t like his declaration that it wasn’t any of their business.

Wikipad sees last-minute delay for new bundle and ‘refinement’

Wikipad Grand Theft Auto III

Were you raring to go and buy a Wikipad instead of trick-or-treating? You might want to search around for some leftover chocolate bars and potato chips. The gaming tablet maker has postponed its shipments the very day they were meant to start after chances to both to improve the bundled content and make a “minor refinement” to the experience. Any delay may be comparatively short when Wikipad says it’s already in the last stage of firming up a new schedule, and it’s vowing a gift in return for maintaining a pre-order — still, the clock is ticking if the company wants to score some mobile gamers before the holidays are over. You can check the full statement for yourself after the break.

Hurricane Sandy Looters Emerge As New Jersey Floodwaters Recede

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — On a narrow street coated with mud and strewn with debris, Pat Shields stood at a makeshift barrier of scrap metal and plywood, tattooed arms crossed over his burly chest. He turned away strangers headed toward the nearby water’s edge.

This neighborhood, a few hundred yards from a bay opening into the Atlantic, was battered by surging water from Hurricane Sandy, which flowed into living rooms and floated cars and trucks down the street like toys.

But as the water receded, a new threat emerged: looters.

With Democrats Likely To Hang On To Senate, Filibuster Reform Prospects Brighten

Sandy-Weary Hoboken Residents Criticize City Over Evacuation Warnings

HOBOKEN, N.J. — Frank Quiroz and Idania Roman slogged through a waist-high mix of Hudson River water, sewage and gasoline Wednesday afternoon, hoisting bags full of tennis shoes and dry clothes on a three-mile trek to find family in Jersey City.

The pair had been waiting since Tuesday for the waters to recede, but after extinguishing an electrical fire in their basement and losing all communication with the outside world, they said they couldn’t wait any longer to escape.

“Last year for Irene, they were much more worried than this time,” Roman said of the warnings coming from government officials in Hoboken. “The warnings basically sucked.”
