Ematic takes a stab at the childrens’ tablet market

Monkey see, monkey do – that is more or less what some folks think applies to kids. After all, haven’t we seen enough children who want to follow their dads and moms as an example, with little girls wearing make-up, while little boys doing their best to hold back their tears each time they fall down and scrape their knees? Having said that, with the plethora of gadgets and gizmos that us adults carry with us these days, it goes without saying that there will be little ones out there who would be bugging their parents to also purchase a touchscreen smartphone and a tablet. This might look cute from the outside, but the family dynamics have been altered in this way. Ematic seizes the opportunity to bring balance to families by introducing their FunTab Pro tablet.

The FunTab Pro tablet is not just any ordinary, run-of-the-mill tablet. Sure, it might come with a $149.99 price tag, but that does not mean it skimps on quality. You will find that it is made out of some rugged construction and design choices, while delivering a custom interface which offers nothing but fun, educational and parent-approved content for a safe online experience. Yes sir, with the number of weirdos stalking the Internet these days, you can never be too safe, can you?

The Ematic FunTab Pro will run on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, and Roy Rayn, President of Ematic, has this to say, “Ematic teamed up with Zoodles Kids Mode to create a safe and educational online learning experience for children. Zoodles is the top app for kids, and leads your child through every step of the interface with large buttons and vocal cues.” With a rubberized texture and ergonomic design, the rubber coating ensures one has a secure grip, while the original shape fits perfectly in small hands.

Other hardware specifications of the FunTab Pro include a 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes, a 7” 800×480 multi-touch screen, front and back cameras, built-in WiFi, HDMI output and a claimed 8 hours of continuous playtime.

BendDesk: Combines Workstation with Multitouch Computer

To be honest, I’m never satisfied with my workstation. Most of the time, I say to myself that it will do for now, but there’s always room for improvement. Check out the BendDesk, which merges a desk with a computer workstation in a most efficient manner.

benddesk concept workstation computer desk

The BendDesk is a working prototype that was designed and created as part of a research project by by Malte Weiss, Simon Voelker, Jan Borchers from the Media Computing Group, and Christine Sutter from the Department of Work and Cognitive Psychology of the RWTH Aachen University in Germany. The whole setup is multi-touch, and allows users to interact with the entire surface. It  merges two separate vertical and horizontal work surfaces, enabling continuous interaction between both of them.

This is still a concept, and if you’ve got the money, you can get yourself a Microsoft Surface (PixelSense) Table, but honestly I’d rather like to have a functional touchscreen on a desk than on a coffee or dining table.

Acer Iconia W510 Windows 8 tablet hits November 9 from $500

Acer has announced pricing and availability for its second Windows 8 tablet, the Iconia W510, which will hit shelves on November 9 priced from $499.99. Announced back in July at Computex, the Acer Iconia W510 has a 10.1-inch 1,366 x 768 IPS LCD display and runs Windows 8 on Intel’s 1.5GHz dualcore Atom Z2760 Clover Trail processor, rather than the Ivy Bridge Core i3/i5 of its more expensive Iconia W700 sibling.

Your money gets you 2GB of RAM and a choice of 32GB or 64GB of SSD storage, along with a microSD card slot. Other connectivity includes microUSB and micro HDMI, along with WiFi a/b/g/n; there’s also an integrated g-sensor, digital compass, and gyroscope.

Acer is offering the Iconia W510 with a detachable keyboard dock, which not only makes for easier text entry but adds a full-sized USB port. Together, the two are 0.84-inches thick and 2.63 pounds; ditch the dock, however, and it’s down to 0.35-inches thick.

However, if you ignore the keyboard section you also miss out on the add-on battery: alone, the W510 runs for up to nine hours, Acer claims, but that’s extended to 18hrs with the keyboard attached. On the front there’s a 2-megapixel camera – with 1080p video recording – together with an 8-megapixel camera on the back with autofocus and an LED flash.

The Acer Iconia W510 will be priced at $499.99 for the 32GB SSD model, though you don’t get the keyboard dock for that, or  $749.99 for the 64GB version with the dock. There’ll also be an enterprise-focused version, the Acer Iconia W510P, with a Trusted Platform Module and running Windows 8 Pro, priced at $799.99.

More on the Iconia W510 in our hands-on.

Nvidia launches geforce 650 ti, maingear says all desktop models now support it

No one can accuse Maingear of skipping the latest hardware cycles — less than a month after offering PCs with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 and 660 graphics, the PC system builder has announced that you can get all its desktop machines with GTX 650 Ti graphics now, too. As it happens, NVIDIA has just launched that very product — a friskier version of the GTX 650 with extra Cuda cores — keeping Maingear in lockstep with its graphics board suppliers again. That card will fill the gap between the $229 GeForce GTX 660 and $109 GTX 650 cards and run $149 (estimated), while Maingear has said it will feature special F131 and Potenza GTX 650 Ti systems at $150 off, along with a free copy of Assassin Creed III. So, if you need all the fps you can get, but can’t quite pony up for the more desirable GTX 660, check the PR for more details.

‘Contre Jour’ is now playable in the browser, one third of the levels require IE 10

'Contre Jour' is now playable in the browser, one third of the levels require IE 10

Say it with us: Developers! Developers! Developers! That’s Steve Ballmer’s mantra and indeed, it says a lot about the way Microsoft has gone about promoting Internet Explorer. In addition to a series of prime-time ads (maybe you’ve seen ’em), the company has been using certain HTML 5 apps to show devs what they can do using IE 10’s deep multitouch support. Now the outfit’s back, this time with a game: Contre Jour is coming to the web, and while it runs in any modern browser, you’ll need IE 10 and a Windows 8 machine to play a third of the levels (it shouldn’t make a difference if you have a touchscreen or a multitouch trackpad). That’s because in some parts of the game, you’ll be required to use as many as three fingers at once to pull off certain maneuvers. In IE 10 you can do this, so you get access to all 30 levels; if you’re using a different browser that doesn’t support these gestures, the levels will remain locked. Hit up the source link to play the game for free, and if a game based on “The Little Prince” doesn’t do much for you, at least check out the Behind the Scenes section — coding geeks should appreciate the deeper explanation as to how the web app was built.

Anyone Else Having iOS Buyer’s Remorse? [Chatroom]

Despite the problems I had with the HTC One X, I find myself missing it. More specifically—and I never thought I’d hear myself saying this—I find myself missing Android. The widgets, specifically. I just had that thing so damn dialed in. Anyone else? More »

Fifth-Generation iPod Touch Early Orders Are Shipping Now

Screen shot 2012-10-09 at 8.59.41 AM

When Apple first announced the 5th-generation iPod touch, the only timeframe given for shipping was October. And here we are, receiving word that the first orders for the new iPod touch with a four-inch display have already begun shipping.

We heard a few days ago that orders were “preparing to ship,” but according to AppleInsider, those shipments are now on their way.

Estimated delivery times for standard shipping are around next Monday, October 15. Apple has even published the iPod touch 5th generation user guide on iBooks, just in case you’re looking for a little extra info.

In the meantime, if you’re one of the future owners of an iPod touch, and placed your order around the middle of September, chances are your precious is on a plane or boat or some vessel from China on its way to you.

The only concern you should have should be whether or not Apple can keep up with demand. The iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th gen have the same 4-inch display, and clearly the iPhone 5 is in high demand right now.

Readers who received shipping notifications shared with AppleInsider on Tuesday that their orders for the new iPod touch have now shipped from China and are en route to the U.S. Estimated deliveries for standard shipping are before next Monday, Oct. 15.

One reader who provided detailed information on their shipment revealed that the package has been shipped via FedEx from one of the shipper’s origin facilities in Kunshan, China. That order was placed on Sept. 14.

iPod touch pre-orders begin to ship

Earlier today we reported that benchmarks for Apple’s latest iPod touch had surfaced along with an official iPod touch guide which was available for download via the iBookstore. This suggested that the iPod touch would be ready for sale and shipping soon. Well according to the reports and a comment left by one of our readers, shipments for those who pre-ordered their device have already begun and is expected to see a delivery date for the 15th of October. Apple did promise an October timeframe and we guess now’s as good a time as any! There have also been reports that the iPod touch is available for purchase via some of Apple’s retail stores, so if you plan to pick one up, we expect that you should be able to do so via Apple’s retail stores (best call and check before doing so!) or you can place an order online, where hopefully your order will also see a delivery date on or after the 15th of October.

Guild Wars 2 to introduce paid PvP tournaments

One of the joys of playing an MMO is that there’s something for everyone. For example gamers who wish to roleplay can do so, while those who prefer to quest and raid can do so, while gamers who wish to fight against other players can do so as well. Interestingly though, ArenaNet has recently announced that as far as PvP for Guild Wars 2 is concerned, gamers will have the option of participating in paid tournaments. This seems like a departure from typical PvP events which is generally free of charge, although we expect that its paid factor should weed out those looking to fool around and encourage the more serious gamer.

ArenaNet did not state how much these paid PvP arenas will cost, but they did state that players will need tickets which can be bought from the gem store, or which can also be found in reward chests from the free tournaments, or when players gain a rank. ArenaNet also stated that all players participating will receive something for their efforts, although unsurprisingly the teams that place 1st to 4th will receive much better rewards. Given that Guild Wars 2 is free to play, as in there is no monthly subscription fee normally associated with MMOs, we guess paid PvP tournaments is just one of the ways ArenaNet can make money from the game. More details about the future of PvP in Guild Wars 2 can be found on ArenaNet’s blog in the source link below.
