Sony unveils PlayStation exclusive Assassin’s Creed 3 bonuses

Good news gamers, it looks like if you were looking forward to Assassin’s Creed 3, well you’re probably aware of the fact that today is the day when the game is launching (as if we needed to remind you about that!). Now it seems that Sony has decided to reward Assassin Creed 3 gamers who will be playing the game on their PlayStation 3 console. This takes the form of four exclusive missions that gamers will be able to access to on day one itself, with no extra fees whatsoever. These four missions can be downloaded via the PlayStation Store update, although Sony notes that access to these missions might be locked depending on your progress within the game. To top it off, it seems that if you’re a huge fan enough to buy both Assassin’s Creed 3 for the PS3 and Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation for the PlayStation Vita, gamers will be able to access Cross Content. So, who’s excited for Assassin’s Creed 3?

Pantech secures next-generation Android devices with Mocana

Pantech has announced that it will be securing its next-generation Android smartphones and tablets using software from a security firm called Mocana. Mocana’s VeloDAR solution will be used to integrate FIPS 140-2 certified encryption capability into new Pantech devices. The VeloDAR software protects data at rest on the internal memory of the Pantech smartphone.

The security software also protects any data stored on SD cards that are used in the device. VeloDAR uses Mocana’s government-certified FIPS 140-2 Level 1 cryptographic module called NanoCrypto. VeloDAR was specifically designed for Android device manufacturers to enable encryption capabilities beyond what is natively available in Android.

The software provides high-performance, efficient encryption, and promises virtually zero performance penalty. VeloDAR is a key component of the Mocana Security Detail for Android, which is a comprehensive suite of security software, services, and expertise that allows OEMs to build secure Android devices. The idea is that Android manufacturers can focus on hardware design with Mocana handling security.

Other components of the Security Detail for Android suite include the Mocana VeloVPN Client, which promises to be the most complete IPSec VPN Client for Android device manufacturers in the industry. One of the first Pantech devices to get the Mocana software will be the Flex. The Flex will have 4.3-inch HD Super AMOLED and a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor along with the eight-megapixel rear camera.

Google’s Andy Rubin explains why the Nexus 4 lacks 4G LTE

google nexus 4So Google’s next-gen Nexus device, the Nexus 4, has been officially launched. This is certainly great news for Android fans who want an unadulterated version of Android on their phones versus the modified version of Android they usually get from manufacturers. While last year’s “compromise” might have been a slightly less impressive camera, it seems that the compromise Google is making with this year’s Nexus is the lack of 4G LTE. Pretty much all the high-end smartphones these days come with 4G LTE, and even Apple has hopped aboard the LTE bandwagon with the iPhone 5, so why does the Nexus 4 lack that feature? (more…)

EE lights up 4G LTE and fiber in UK

LTE has gone live in the UK, with EE opening up its 4G doors to subscribers hoping for a little extra boost in their smartphone or mobile hotspot. The launch – which has hardly left rival UK carriers happy, waiting as they are for more spectrum before they stage their own LTE deployment in mid-2013 – sees smartphone plans from £36 per month with a device, while EE is also offering fiber broadband for homes and businesses.

That fiber option promises up to 76 Mb/sec, with plans starting from £25 per month. There’s also the promise of a £5 monthly discount if you’re also an LTE subscriber, while EE also offers a regular (i.e. non-fiber) broadband package priced from £5 per month, for those with more humble speed needs.

All of EE’s mobile plans come with unlimited calls and messaging, though some LTE-hopefuls were disappointed by the data limits the carrier had opted for. £36 gets you a mere 500MB, while bundles up to 8GB are available; EE says it has made for better value by throwing in numerous extras, such as free movie rentals and cloud backup for devices.

EE Film isn’t just for EE subscribers, either; the app is available for subscribers of other networks, too. It’s currently to be found in the Google Play store, though is also promised for iOS at some point in time. More information here.

Roku video search tool lands in the US

If you own a Roku set-top box for streaming your favorite TV shows from various services, a new feature has been added that will make it much easier to find what you want watch. In the past if you were looking for a specific show, the only thing you could do was browse through your favorite channels to find what you want to watch. Roku has now added a new search feature that will do all of that browsing for you.

Using the new Roku Search tool you can find movies, TV shows, actors, and directors across Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, VUDU, and HBO Go. The search results show you where the content you’re looking for is available on the Roku service. After finding the content you’re looking for, selecting the channel in the results will take you directly to the movie or show you want to watch.

Roku says that the new search tool will grow in importance as it adds new streaming partners to its service. Right now, the search can guide users through nearly 130,000 movies and TV episodes and almost 100,000 actors and directors. Roku Search is available on the Roku 2, Roku LT, and Roku HD players.

The search tool is also available on the Roku Streaming Stick. Users can search for the keyboard and the Remote tab of the Roku iOS and Android mobile applications. The updated has the new search tool and will be rolling out over the next week at no cost. Users not wanting to wait for the update be applied automatically can run a manual update to bring their device up to software version 4.8 352X.

Livestream for Producers Android app update brings live video broadcasts over wireless data connections

Livestream for Producers Android app update brings live video broadcasts over wireless data connections

Android users of generation “Hey Look at Me!” can now add another tool to their arsenal of lifestyle sharing. The Livestream for Producers Android application received an update on Monday that introduces “single touch” sign up and logins through Facebook, a new app icon and some unnamed bug fixes. However, the most noteworthy addition here is the ability to run live ad-free videos over 3G and 4G data connections. Requiring Android 2.2 or higher, this free media streaming app might be an ideal companion for folks looking to incriminate co-workers at this year’s Halloween costume party — all in good fun of course. Just be sure to remember who signs your paycheck before you decide to take a broadcast live.

Sky+ adds BBC iPlayer for on-demand entertainment

Sky UK has added the BBC’s iPlayer video-on-demand service to Sky+, the first time the VoD system has been enabled on the satellite provider’s boxes. Requiring a Sky+ HD set-top box, and with content showing up in the Sky On Demand section of the DVR, the new iPlayer addition uses roughly the same interface as its browser-based version, only now no longer requires a laptop be hooked up to the TV.

Sky first announced its deal with the BBC back in January, at which point it also added access to the ITV catalog of on-demand shows. Subscribers to the satellite TV service already had the option of viewing select archived BBC shows, such as Top Gear and Doctor Who, but not the full catch-up service iPlayer users on other platforms could enjoy.

In fact, iPlayer is now available across 650 platforms and devices, the BBC says, including Xbox 360, on iOS and Android smartphones, and now on Sky’s Sky+ HD PVR. Sky users won’t need to have Sky-provided broadband, either, with that limitation lifted earlier in the year as well; however, they will need broadband internet of some description, since that’s how the iPlayer content is delivered to their STB.

The BBC has steadily been increasing its footprint in digital and mobile devices, extending beyond terrestrial channels. Most recently, it launched the BBC iPlayer Radio app, which focuses on audio content – though also offers companion video – for smartphones.

Natural keyboard helps you connect with nature

Most of us would not give second thoughts about our keyboards – after all, aren’t these inanimate objects that do not have the ability to think, feel, or express itself (other than respond to your keystrokes, that is)? Robbie Tilton of NYU decided to take a second look at the humble keyboard that is used by millions and millions of people worldwide, where this bit of inspiration came about after he undertook a course in fabrication, realizing that he wanted to introduce a change of pace in keyboard technology – by making it more personal and less lifeless. The Natural Keyboard, as he calls it, is a wooden keyboard that comes slathered in moss, and you are required to add some moisture from time to time so that the moss does not die off and stink.

Some DIY knowledge is required, including a laser cutter, 1/32” thick wood, and a decent moss recipe to help you get started. I would not want to sleep face down on this thing though, as who knows what kind of spores might end up in my lungs, where it could be the beginning of the end as we know it no thanks to some secret zombie inducing virus to usher in the zombie apocalypse.

Microsoft Office 2013 box art leaked

Brace yourself, Microsoft Office 2013 is coming, and you know that you cannot wait to make that upgrade if your finances allow you to do so. So far, the box art for Microsoft Office 2013 does seem to have leaked out – obviously before the official announcement happened. It does seem as though what was leaked resembled a clean and professional design, where it somewhat matches the overall feeling of Windows 8 – at least, vaguely. Do bear in mind that the box art remains as a symbolic item, as there is no disc within. Basically, one will have to download Microsoft Office 2013 if you want to enjoy it as soon as it is made available over the Internet, although folks who prefer something physical will just have to wait it out for slightly longer.

Folks who picked the current retail version of Office 2010 from October 19th can receive a free copy of Office 2013 when it starts to ship in the first quarter of next year. Of course, just as a refresher, folks who picked up a new Windows RT-based hardware product on or after October 26th will also be able to enjoy a “preview” version of Office 2013.

Smart Highway in the Netherlands glows in the dark

Designer and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure have teamed up to come up with a potential life saver – where they have called it a ‘Smart Highway’ prototype which will be able to make roads a whole lot safer for drivers, and the whole point of it would be to have the Smart Highway prototype work at night. After all, these will glow in the dark, with the ultimate aim of creating roads that are not only more sustainable, but also a whole lot more interactive (we do not think it will be Disneyland-like levels though) through the clever implementation of lights, smart energy, and road signs which can adapt to specific traffic situations.

Some of these designs include Glow-in-the-Dark roads, Dynamic Paint, Interactive Light, Induction Priority Lane, and Wind Light. The pathways of the Glow-in-the-Dark roads will be treated with a special kind of foto-luminizing powder, making sure that there is no need for additional lighting, relying on the power of the sun during the day to juice up, where they can then illuminate the contours of the road for up to 10 hours each night. These will be introduced on Dutch highways from next year onwards – and we do wonder why can’t such innovations be implemented in other countries worldwide.
