Vibease has its own app, smartphone use gets more pleasurable

We have seen our fair share of long distance relationship apps that coupled with some special kind of hardware, they help ensure that the spark of love is maintained, never mind that a great distance separates them. Vibease has come up with a special kind of app that allows one’s partner to control the vibrator of another regardless of distance. Once you have turned on the “massager” and launched the app, you are able to hook up using Bluetooth, choosing solo mode if that is how you plan to fly that night, or enable your partner to take full control, operating the device on your behalf. Not exactly as attractive as having the person right there beside you physically, but it is a start – don’t you think so?

The Vibease comes with five levels of power and a quartet of vibration patterns, and partners can also video chat simultaneously, or opt to snap photos – although you would do well to make sure that the photos are stashed away somewhere safe. The Vibease is up for pre-order at $79.99 a pop, and its app seems to run on the Android platform only for the moment.

BBC iPlayer comes to Sky+, Hell reports incoming frost

BBC iPlayer comes to Sky, Hell reports incoming frost

The BBC and Sky may represent polar, warring opposites of the broadcasting business, but that doesn’t mean their technology platforms can’t get along. Following a promise made all the way back in January, internet-connected Sky+HD boxes will be able to access BBC iPlayer from today. The service has been integrated into Sky’s world-class program guide, with users even able to plump to catch available shows in high definition. The announcement also let slip that 4OD, the last remaining holdout to the service, will be added in early 2013. If you’ve yet to hook your Sky box up to the internet, you just need an Ethernet cable or wireless adapter — but let’s hope for your sake they aren’t at opposite ends of your house.

Reebok and MC10 has smart skullcap to help detect head injuries

When it comes to sport, there is always a risk of someone getting injured – unless you are playing chess, of course. Competitive sports have evolved over time in terms of safety and medical care, but you cannot fully eliminate injuries to the athletes. Reebok-CCM Hockey and startup MC10 have come together to work on a new skullcap which ought to be worn under a helmet, and this skullcap integrates a wearable sports impact indicator that relies on sensors to detect the severity of a blow. It was specially designed to inform athletes as to whether they are in need of medical treatment or rest before resuming play.

I would assume that this information will also be fed back to the team’s medical doctor on site during a game, so that the player who wants to play through the pain barrier will need not endanger his or her life needlessly, as the doctor will most probably be able to make the better informed call. Expect to see this new high tech skullcap make its way into consumer class products from next year onwards if all things go well.

Nikon D5200 announcement coming soon?

Just what would be the next big DSLR announcement from camera manufacturers Nikon? It does seem as though that next in line for the stage would be the Nikon D5200, which will oust the current generation D5100 within the coming weeks. No idea on whether there will be other product announcements as well during the Nikon D5200’s debut, but I guess having something introduced to the masses is better than nothing.

It is said that the new Nikon D5200 will come with slightly modified specifications compared to the Nikon D3200, despite using the very same 24-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor and share the same EXPEED 3 processor. Some of the differences include its ISO range that stands at 100-6,400 (expandable up to 25,600), a 2,016 pixel RGB metering sensor, and the ability to have a continuous shooting speed of 5fps. Time to start saving up if you think that you want to change your DSLR to something newer, no?

Google Nexus Q not for sale at the moment

No company is capable of churning out home run after home run, even if your name is of a certain fruit, or if you are the world’s first and foremost authority where searching on the Internet is concerned. Google has long branched out to hardware, where their Google Nexus Q was announced some months back, but it seems that the Nexus Q might be slated for obsolescence. This comes as no surprise ever since it was introduced in June earlier this year, carrying a tiny set of features without really carving out a sustainable market for itself. It does seem as though the Nexus Q’s landing page is now no more, as only the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 appear there.

As for the Nexus Q’s placement in the Play Store, it is still there, albeit accompanied by a message that reads, “This device is not for sale at this time”. Google has declined to issue an official statement on where the Nexus Q stands, so one can only make an educated guess at this point in time.

Nike+Kinect Training for Xbox 360 owners

Nike teamed up with Apple in the past, where one was able to run with a pair of Nike shoes (obviously) while listening to their iPods, and there will be a program that keeps track of your fitness progress along the way. Nike has decided to try something slightly different now, with the Nike+Kinect Training physical fitness training program which will play nice on the Xbox 360 console.

The $50 Nike+ Kinect Training boasts of an interactive program which has been specially tailored to the users’ ability and fitness goals. Nike claims that the Kinect Training will not be the same as other physical fitness/activity programs, considering how Microsoft is already selling approximately 20 others for the Xbox 360, simply because this time around, it involves the user on a whole new level. Described as “a service tied to an ecosystem”, we cannot wait to see just how the entire exercise (pardon the pun, as well as the one coming your way) will pan out in the long run. I say if you want to get fit, mixing it up with video games might not be the best idea – just pound the pavement or the treadmill in a proper gym and the benefits would be more.

Sony PS3 4.31 update is optional

It does seem as though the Sony PS3 is ready for yet another system software update, where applying it will bump up the software version to v4.31 on your PS3. Right now, it does seem as though the purpose of the update remains a mystery, making it instead an optional one, so even if you prefer to remain stuck on v4.30, that is entirely all right.

The new Sony PS3 v4.31 update has already gone live, and it does not seem to ring in long awaited bells and whistles. In fact, a post on the PS3 community forums read, “I’m posting this message to inform you that there will be a minor firmware update (v.4.31) released on the evening of Monday, October 29th. There will not be PlayStation Network maintenance during this time; online play and access to apps will not be affected during the release of this update. This is not a mandatory update. However, we suggest you keep your systems updated with the latest firmware, as these updates further improve overall system stability and help provide you with the best online entertainment experience possible.”

Has anyone updated to v4.31, and how do you find it? I guess having your PS3 run in a more stable and improved manner is always a good thing, and as long as no new problems are introduced with an update installation, I am all for it.

Sony unveils F5 and F55 CineAlto 4k camcorders

Sony has announced the arrival of its two new high-end 4k camcorders, the PMW-F5 and the PMW-F55, which it says is to fill the gap between its PMW-F3 and F65 cameras. These camcorders are aimed at the professional market, and are obvious competitors to the likes of RED. No price yet, but considering that the F65 costs $65,000, it’s safe to assume these camcorders are beyond most budgets.

Both the F5 and the F55 offer HD recording, while the F5 offers 2k and the F55 offers 4k. These CineAlto 4k camcorders support recording in XAVC MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, MPEG-4 SStP, and industry standard XDCAM 50mbps 4:2:2. Both camcorders can be used with the AXS-R5 RAW recorder, with the F5 recording up to 120fps and the F55 recording up to 240fps as 4k RAW data.

The F55 supports connection to the PVM-X300 30-inch 4k monitor and the 84-inch BRAVIA 4k LED television. Both camcorders feature a PL-mount for use with a wide variety of lenses. The viewfinders are digital, comprised of OLED and LCD options. The OLED viewfinder has a resolution of 1280×720, and is 0.7-inches in size, while the LCD viewfinder “offers 10 time the contrast of previous Sony LCD viewfinders…”

Both the F5 and F55 utilize Sony’s SxS PRO memory cards, available in 64GB and 128GB capacities, which support high frame rate recording. In terms of batteries, both devices use Olivine-Lithium Iron Phosphate battery packs, offering double-rate speed charging and 150 minutes of consecutive filming. The camreas are slated for release in February.

Evil Back Play DIY kit for Xbox 360 controller

Evil Controllers are not as bad as they sound, so don’t dismiss a company or an organization right away based on its name alone. Basically, Evil Controllers believe that they are able to do a far better job in improving both PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers, and have proven it (for some, at least) with their past releases. This time around, Evil Controllers have decided to rope in the power of crowdfunding with Kickstarter in an attempt to construct a new DIY lithium battery kit for the Xbox 360 controller. Basically, when the Evil Back Play DIY Kit becomes reality, this is not a gamepad to be trifled with as length of play is increased, while the entire controller itself experiences a decrease in the overall weight.

Basically, the Evil Back Plate DIY kit will replace the wireless Xbox 360 controller’s back plate for a new one, and that will come fitted with a high quality lithium-ion battery which can be juiced via USB. Installing it is a snap, all you need to do is remove a few screws, take out the back plate, attach the Evil Back Plate, and screw it in, and you’re good to go.

Google ‘secret police’ visits bartender for Nexus 4 prototype possession

google nexus 4We know that it is illegal to possess a certain kind of drugs, but what about prototype smartphones? I guess those are also illegal as Jamin Barton, also known as “Sudsy” from the 500 club in San Francisco’s Mission District found out. He discovered a prototype for the now announced LG Nexus 4 smartphone at the bar which was left behind by a Google employee, where the handset remained locked and did not have a SIM card, hence Barton could no locate the owner. He then showed off the Nexus 4 prototype to a regular customer who hailed from the tech industry, where it was swiftly identified to be the upcoming Nexus 4. The customer then contacted Google HQ on behalf of Sudsy.

The next day, Barton heard from the patron who sounded rather all shook up after dealing with Google. Barton recalled, “Dave sort of freaked out. [He said] ‘Google lost a phone. You just got a guy fired…The Google police are coming. I probably shouldn’t have shown it to him. But I did. He didn’t work for Google, but Google had him pretty worked up. They told him he could be an accessory or something.”

That’s kind of sad, don’t you think so? Why do prototype phones get left behind in bars? Why not at a restaurant, in a house of worship, or at the supermarket?
