Tourists Stranded In New York By Hurricane Sandy Take Hit In Costs, But Remain Upbeat

Living in Manila, Philippines, Martin Gaw is used to hurricanes. He has seen hurricanes and typhoons that lasted four days, during which water levels were waist-deep. But he didn’t expect to spend his fall vacation in New York City bunkered down at the JW Marriott on Central Park South, watching the incoming Hurricane Sandy through the lobby windows.

Now, instead of going to a museum, a Broadway play or visiting the 9/11 memorial, Gaw is paying about $800 a night for his family to sit in their hotel and watch weather updates.

“I’m disappointed in a way,” Gaw said. “But I’m thinking of the safety of my family.”

Android 4.2 Preview with the Google Nexus 4

google nexus 4Although the big Google Android NYC event got cancelled because of hurricane Sandy, we have been able to catch up with the Android team at home in San Francisco and get a hands-on demonstration of the Google Nexus 4 by LG. The Nexus 4 name comes from the 4.7 inches screen of the handset. In terms of hardware, it is very comparable to the recent LG Optimus G which was launched in Korea last month, and in the USA shortly after that (read our full review of the LG Optimus G).

The Google Nexus 4 uses a different industrial design, which is inspired from the Optimus G, but with the design language of the Nexus series (round corners, completely clean and unbranded front). Inside, you will find the same Snapdragon Pro quad-core chip from Qualcomm, but Google opted for a unique HSPA+ penta-band radio that works worldwide (yes even on T-Mobile USA), instead of several variants of modem to support LTE worldwide. Finally, the price of $329 should make a lot of people happy – this is just about half the price of unlocked phones.

We will work on a full review of the Nexus 4, but for now, let’s look at these new Android 4.2 features. (more…)

Nokia Lumia 920 ships first to Rogers, makes Canadians the world’s vanguards for $100 (update: still very exclusive)

Nokia Lumia 920 Rogers

What, did you think Americans or Europeans would get the first crack at the Lumia 920? Continuing a recent pattern of Canadians getting devices first, Rogers has confirmed that some of its stores will have Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone 8 hardware in stock on October 30th — that’s almost immediately, folks. If you call and find you’re near one of the choice few shops carrying the 920, it will cost you either $100 Canadian on a lengthy 3-year contract or $550 outright to walk away with Microsoft’s poster child. Nearly the only drawbacks to being a pioneer are the black-only color choice (sorry, still no patriotic red) and Rogers’ current lock on the initial launch, although Microsoft’s own mention of the Lumia coming to Rogers “and others” gives us hope that Bell and Telus will follow soon. It’s a small price to pay for making even the Finns slightly jealous.

Update: Surprise — Rogers caught the Microsoft page for itself and says the hint of non-exclusivity was a mistake that’s being corrected. We don’t know if the carrier has a permanent exclusive, but we’d tentatively go shopping for a Samsung ATIV S on Telus if you’re looking for a high-end Windows Phone on another Canadian network.

Skype for Windows Phone 8 preview

Skype was announced to be integrated within Windows Phone 8 like never before seen or done on any other mobile operating system – which makes sense actually, considering how Microsoft owns Skype. Well, here are more details on Skype for Windows Phone 8 – it has been specially built from ground up to be an integral part of the Windows Phone experience, allowing you to be contacted at all times via voice or video, never mind that you have already opted to navigate away to another app, or have locked your device. This happens without causing too much strain on your battery, too, making it the ideal VoIP mobile app to tote around.

Incoming Skype calls will resemble the familiar incoming call screen from Windows Phone, and you can also perform call waiting, allowing you to switch between a Skype call and a regular mobile call in a jiffy. Resizable Live Tiles are also introduced in Skype, giving you more options as you make Skype a part of your Start Screen. Skype notifications can also be selected to appear on the lock screen alongside missed calls, unread emails and text messages, now how about that? Are you looking ready to use Skype like you’ve never done before on your upcoming Windows Phone 8 device?

Adam Levine House: Maroon 5 Rock Star Buys In Beverly Hills, Calif. (PHOTOS)

When Maroon 5 went on its very first tour, unknown singer Adam Levine didn’t have enough money to hold on to his $800 per month bedroom in a shared home, he told Architectural Digest. After the two-year tour was over, Levine had the opposite problem: he returned to LA a bonafide rock star, but had nowhere to rest his head. “I suddenly had a career,” said Levine to Architectural Digest, “but nowhere to live.”

All that is a distant memory now for Levine, a globally renowned musician and a judge on NBC’s “The Voice.” He saw his pay double to $6 million for the show’s third season, which premiered last September. Soon afterward, Levine invested some of that extra cash in a new Beverly Hills mansion, which makes for two multimillion-dollar properties under his name.

Celebuzz confirms that Levine closed the $4.8 million home purchase on Oct. 19. Known as the “Benedict House,” the six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home sits on a 3.5 acre lot and boasts a pool, tennis court, canyon views and a guest house.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix appears on Israeli website

I do admit, with a name like the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix, it certainly does border on the cool, as it reminds me of the DNA helix, which is the building block of life itself. Well, the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix will be running on the Windows 8 operating system, where this tablet targets business users, sporting a detachable keyboard dock that comes in handy whenever you want to type a long, drawn out document on the go without having to grapple with the feeling of typing on air using a virtual keyboard. Not officially released yet, the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix has already appeared on the company’s Israeli website – no idea on whether this was done on purpose, or it is just a mistake on the webmaster’s part.

The real sword of Damocles hanging over the White House right now is this Friday’s release of the October unemployment figures. If the numbers are bad, it could give Romney the last-second momentum he needs. If the numbers are good, Obama could waltz to victory.

Chrome Remote Desktop now out of beta and added with more features

Following its beta launch one year ago, Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop is now officially out with more nifty features. Among the new features added are real-time audio feed on Windows which will allow users, for example, to access music files remotely across computers and the ability to copy-and-paste between local and remote computers. In case you haven’t heard about Chrome Remote Desktop, it’s actually an extension that allows users to remotely access another computer through a Chrome browser or a Chromebook.

“One year ago, we launched Chrome Remote Desktop in beta. From adjusting printer settings on your mom’s computer to finding a lost file on your dad’s laptop, Chrome Remote Desktop has made you the family hero by helping you remotely access other computers — including your own — via Chrome. Now, we are taking Chrome Remote Desktop out of beta, by adding some additional features,” said Stephen Konig, the Product Manager for Google Chrome.
