Glove Mode on Xperia Sola lets you do a MJ

It was just last week when we talked about how an app enabled the “floating touch” feature throughout the Sony Xperia sola smartphone, but it seems that this was a particularly unnecessary app to install as the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the Sony Xperia sola has introduced a feature known as “Glove Mode” which will allow users of the smartphone to use floating touch technology even when one is wearing gloves. I guess come winter, Xperia sola owners will need not worry about removing their gloves to expose their fingers to the bitter cold when they are trying to text their family or friends. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update arrived for the Xperia sola, Xperia Go and Xperia U, but the Xperia sola seems to be the only one that will receive the Glove Mode feature. Which is a good thing, I would say, what do you think?

Of course, others might say that having Glove Mode work with all apps via the app would be the ultimate, but how many times do you actually touch your handset’s display with wet fingers? If that is the case, you would do well to settle for a more durable handset like the Xperia acro S.

HP ElitePad 900 tablet means business

HP has outed its newest tablet, the ElitePad 900, a business-centric slate running Windows 8 and offering interchangeable jackets to add new functionality, battery life, and protection. Wrapping an Intel Clove Trail processor and 2GB of RAM inside a 1.5-pound brushed aluminum casing, the ElitePad 900 meets MIL-Spec 810G for dust, splash, and drop resilience, and supports digital pen input on its 10.1-inch Gorilla Glass display.

That display – which also responds to regular finger-touch input – runs at 400-nits, for outdoor usability, and at 1,280 x 800 resolution. Above it there’s a 1080p-capable webcam, while an 8-megapixel camera is on the back,  with LED flash, also capable of Full HD video recording.

HP ElitePad 900 overview:

Ports and connectivity include microSD and a SIM slot for the integrated 3G/4G modem, along with WiFi and Bluetooth, though to keep things 9.2mm thick the more typical PC ports have been relegated to adapter dongles. There’s a range of connectors, including ethernet, an SD card reader, VGA, HDMI, and USB. Storage is either 32GB or 64GB of SSD, and judging by the icon on the back panel there’s NFC too.

Alternatively, HP is pushing its docks and SmartJacket sleeves. The Docking Station is a low-profile block with four USB, wired ethernet, VGA, HDMI, power, audio-out, and a Kensington lock hole; with an external keyboard and mouse it turns the ElitePad 900 into a compact desktop.

It’s the SmartJackets that are most interesting, however, expansion sleeves that fit neatly around the ElitePad 900 and not only protect it but add extra functionality. Initially, there will be two to choose from: the Productivity Jacket, which adds a QWERTY keyboard, various ports, and an SD card reader; and the Expansion Jacket, which adds USB, HDMI, and other ports. The latter can also be equipped with a second battery, taking the total runtime to more than 16hrs; on its own, the tablet will run for around 10hrs.

Finally, there’s a Rugged Case for extra protection, and HP has made the ElitePad 900 to be easily opened up for those wanting to do their own maintenance. The company will provide the necessary tools to get past the magnetic clasps and other fasteners.

The HP ElitePad 900 will arrive in January 2013, though there’s no word on pricing at this stage.

Screen Grabs: Elementary pilot has Sherlock Holmes using murder victim’s Lumia 800

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Screen Grabs Elementary pilot has Sherlock Holmes using murder victim's Lumia 800

Whether you’re a fan of CBS’s Elementary spin on Sherlock Holmes or not, it sure gave a nice amount screen-time to cellphones in its pilot. While there was prominent use of iPhones in the episode, we’re highlighting a seemingly forced Nokia Lumia 800 cameo — you’d think it would at least be the 900 being an American series. The camera takes a tight shot of Sherlock swiping through photos on a murder victim’s black Lumia twice, highlighting the Nokia logo and Windows Phone 7.5 gallery interface. Here’s your clue to see it for yourself: check around the 8-minute mark at the source link below.

iCloud glitch sees storage remain at 25GB for another 38 years

Hmmm, things do not seem to be going great guns for Apple at this particular point in time, what with their CEO’s recent apology for the Apple Maps snafu, here we are with something that could very well bring a smile to users’ faces. There seems to be a glitch in the iCloud account system that has pushed the renewal dates for users 38 years in advance to 2050, instead of downgrading them to just 5GB of storage space. Of course, not all accounts are affected, but those which were displayed extended storage space with renewal dates that were set years in the future.

This particular change is in all probability a system glitch that is most probably the result of an operator error, and make no mistake about it – a company like Apple will most likely perform a correction in due time. Do not be surprised if this benefit no longer appears in the future, and we suspect that it will not be long. As to whether any heads rolled due to this particular glitch, that remains to be seen.

Smart ForStars concept car has built-in projector

Hmmm, drive-in movie theaters are something that we tend to associate with the stuff of our parents or even grandparents, depending on their age group. You know the old saying in the east, “If Ali cannot go to the mountain, then let the mountain come to Ali”. Forget about looking out for a drive-in movie theater as you work to create your very own, assuming this conceptual Smart ForStars which was paraded at the Paris Auto Show is realized on a huge scale. As you can most probably tell by now, this ride will feature its very own video projection system, allowing you to enjoy your favorite show wherever you are.

The Smart ForStars sport utility coupe will rely on a similar electric drive train which is found in the new Smart BRABUS electric car, where its 60-kW electric motor will help move you around town without missing a beat. All you need to do is find a nice, relatively white flat surface, and you are good to go. You might want to keep your ride plugged in at home though if you were to sit through a movie marathon with this, especially when you are dealing with trilogies and the like. [Press Release]

Urban Outfitters to ditch cash registers for iPads

I have been a customer in a Japanese fast food restaurant that uses iPads as its menu, where orders you place will be sent straight to the kitchen without the need to summon a garçon over. Well, it seems that menus are not the only items to be replaced by the iPad, but Urban Outfitters could very well ditch the traditional cash register for Apple’s hot selling tablet as well. According to CIO Calvin Hollinger, they will eventually be using nothing but Apple devices in their stores, where sales people will carry the iPod touch, while cash registers are rendered obsolete by iPads on a swivel.

Hollinger continues, “Two or three weeks ago, we placed our very last register order… once we make sure this ipad works.. all stores will be equipped with iPod touches and iPads.” He explained further on this issue that iPads cost approximately 20% cheaper than a cash register, and has far more functionality. What do you think of this move, and will other companies adopt a similar approach?

Could Nokia Win the Map Battle? [Nokia]

Nokia is to be part of a big mapping tie-in with the enterprise giant Oracle. Given the current map furore, and bearing in mind that Nokia Maps is actually good, this could be the Fins’ big chance: maybe, just maybe, Nokia could sneak through the backdoor and claim a victory. More »

BlackBerry London specifications leaked

Are you looking forward to just what RIM (Research In Motion) has in store for the masses with their BlackBerry 10 platform, especially the L-Series of devices which comprise of the London, Lisbon and Laguna? Well, if you have answered in the affirmative, here is a little bit of good news for you – leaked specifications for the BlackBerry London have arrived, where it is tipped to come with a TI OMAP4 processor underneath its hood, but then again, you might want to take this bit of news with a relatively large grain of salt since it is not an official piece of information by RIM at this point in time.

The BlackBerry London does seem to be equipped with a 4.2” display at 1280 x 768 resolution, sport an 8-megapixel shooter with Full HD video recording capability, carry 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot to boot. There is also Wi-Fi support, DLNA, microUSB and Bluetooth 2.1. Not only that, “Face Detect” for phone calls was also listed, piquing our interest in the BlackBerry London even further. What about you?
