Philips introduces iPhone and iPad-controlled LED home lighting system

Dutch multinational electronics company, Philips, is introducing a new LED home lighting system that will enable users to control light wirelessly through an app for smartphones or tablets. Philips hue, as it is called, features pre-programmed lighting settings that are based on Philips’ research surrounding the biological effects of light on the body. So how does it work? Basically, Philips hue has a starter pack that includes three bulbs, a bridge that can be plugged into a Wi-Fi router, and an app that can be downloaded into your iPhone or iPad.

The app will allow users to save their favorite light themes for each room, use any photo on their phone as a color palette, create ambience or complement room decorations, monitor lights remotely, and set program timers to help them with their daily schedule. Philips hue will be available exclusively on Apple Stores beginning October 30 for the price of $199. There’s also an individual pack which is actually an extension to the introduction pack. Philips says that users can connect up to 50 bulbs into the bridge. You can learn more about Philips hue here.

Nexus 4 leaked on video, Android 4.2 gets exposed alongside new LG hardware

Nexus 4 leaked on video, Android 42 gets exposed alongside new LG hardware

There ain’t much here we haven’t seen before, but look — it’s a video. The thoroughly leaked LG Nexus 4 — which was likely scheduled to be formally unveiled today if not for Hurricane Sandy — has shown up in a 107 second video hosted up by Swedroid. We’re guessing that select international sites briefed on the handset weren’t hearing any of that “delay” stuff, and have instead let loose on the material they had access to. The hardware itself is no surprise, boasting clean lines and a minimalistic motif that looks a hair thicker than we had envisioned before. Android 4.2 looks right at home, though — as if you haven’t seen enough of that in the Nexus 10 leak. Head on past the break and press play, won’t you?

Lonely City USB Hub: Where Did All the People Go?

I just got a cool new laptop yesterday, and as much as I love how insanely thin and lightweight the thing is, I do find that its two USB ports aren’t enough. While there are plenty of add-on USB hubs out there, I have to say that I particularly like the playful and minimal style of the Lonely City USB hub.

lonely city usb hub 1

Designer David Weeks’ little USB city envisions an abandoned town, filled with nondescript white buidings and devoid of people – and just a handful of  blue lights glowing in a few lonely windows. That said, you can always embellish your scene with your own action figures to liven up the little city and its four USB 2.0 ports.

Personally, I think I’d add some tiny zombie action figures and recreate downtown Atlanta from season one of The Walking Dead.

DLNA doubles its certification of audio-video hardware in two years

DLNA doubles its certification of audio-video hardware in two years

Shopping for a new home AV setup with DLNA support? You’ve got twice as many options as you might have had just a few years ago. The Digital Living Network Alliance says that it has certified over 500 AV systems, handily doubling the number of devices it has certified since 2010. The organization issued a press release lambasting the dark ages of pre-DLNA AV setups and the “bulky tapes, memory cards, discs and CDs” that media lovers once had to contend with. “Consumers are demanding more from their digital content and looking for ways to access media from multiple devices on their home network,” explains DLNA chairman and president Nidhish Parikh. “Certified AV systems are able to communicate with other consumer electronics… …effectively expanding the boundaries of the digital home through easy interoperability.” More connected devices for folks outside of the Apple ecosystem? Sounds good to us — even if most devices pack in compatibility for both.

FEMA: Avoid Wireless Calls, Use Text Messages And Social Networks To Reduce Network Strain

FEMA_logo

With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the East Coast, the Federal Emergency Management Agency took to Twitter with a bit of sound advice: Use text messages or social networks to communicate. This will reduce congestion on mobile networks, allowing for better communication for everyone in the path of Frankenstorm.

Hurricane Sandy is likely going to wreak hell on several states. There is expected to be widespread flooding and wind damage. Despite the best efforts by carriers and utility companies, wireless networks will be affected. Don’t be selfish with your phone use.

The idea behind FEMA’s plan is sound. Voice calls consume significantly more bandwidth than text messages or data usage. It’s very important to communicate but your mom does not need a play-by-play of the action. Tune to The Weather Channel for that. Text messages and social networks are well-suited to handle the simple message of “My building survived. I’m fine. Going to the bar. #freetebow”

The Internet has banded together and published a number of resources to help manage communication and disaster relief.

Twitter has also thrown out some helpful tips and resources, which you can find here.

Skyrim Premium Edition confirmed by Bethesda

Well this certainly is interesting: earlier today, Amazon Germany outed a Skyrim Premium Edition. The listing stated that Skyrim Premium Edition will come with a number of bonuses, but strangely, it won’t include any of the DLC that has been released for Xbox 360 and PC. Bethesda then confirmed Skyrim Premium Edition to Eurogamer, revealing that the game will be launching in Europe shortly, with more details set to follow soon.

Bethesda didn’t confirm any other details, but the listing on Amazon Germany shows a number of goodies included alongside the base game. Those who pick up the Premium Edition will be getting a map of Skyrim, a T-shirt featuring the insignia of the Empire, a handful of postcards featuring Skyrim concept art, and an Elder Scrolls novel dubbed Hell City. If you’re buying on PC, you’ll be treated to a bonus disc that features all sorts of content, including trailers, walkthroughs, a copy of the soundtrack, and a 600-page eBook that we’re assuming is a strategy guide.

The listing gives Skyrim Premium Edition a launch date of December 7, and says that the game will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Hearing that, it’s no wonder Bethesda has opted not to include DLC, considering that PS3 players haven’t received any yet. Bethesda’s struggles with bringing Skyrim DLC to PS3 have been well documented, and at the moment it’s unknown if PS3 players will ever get Dawnguard and Hearthfire.

As far as we can tell, this release hasn’t been confirmed for the United States yet. We’ve contacted Bethesda to see if Skyrim Premium Edition will be coming to US shores, and we’ll update this post if we hear back. Keep it here at SlashGear for more details!

Sandy stops Google (but new Android news was hardly a mystery)

It would appear that the force of nature named Sandy did not want her good friend Microsoft to be washed out by Android news just one week after the fact, as today’s Google event was cancelled on account of her rapid approach. That’s all well and good, and Google is certainly going to have a replacement event, but what we know already of the event is… well… more than likely basically everything. Start your journey down this path of explosive news with the release – regardless of a lack of announcement – of the 32GB version of the Nexus 7, out in stores right this minute if you know where to look. From there it’s all software and a few surprises in the Nexus universe, too.

For those of you ready for a whole new tablet environment, have a peek at the Google Nexus 10 in a short hands-on video. This device will have a 10.1-inch display, the same processor we saw in the Series 3 Chromebook we love so well, and will be running Android 4.2. We’ve seen this device snapping photos on a beach as well as in several hands-on photos from all angles.

The LG Nexus 4 has been leaked several times and has appeared quite likely to be taking on many of the features of the LG Optimus G (see our review here). This device has been left at a bar as well as in a full user handbook and specifications layout. This device will have a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor under the hood and more than enough juice to last you a day or two – with Android 4.2 under the hood once again.

We’ve not actually heard one whole heck of a lot about Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean+), believe it or not, other than a few feature points. We’re expecting multiple users to be able to log in on an Android device, different user accounts depending on who is using the phone – separate file systems for each, and some enhanced usability features for the tablet environment. This release of both the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 10 is more than likely about to bring about wireless charging as a standard for the whole Android-toting world, too.

It will likely be less than a week before we see these items all come to fruition, but it’s hard to say how Google will run this show now that the initial event has had to be cancelled. Stick around SlashGear as we catch Microsoft’s second show in the meantime – Windows Phone 8 starts today!

Nexus 7 32GB in stock at Walmart

We already know what the 32GB version of the Nexus 7 will be priced at, thanks to an earlier report of the device showing up on Office Depot shelves. $250 will get the 32GB version, while the 16GB model will be $199. A second confirmation has just hit Walmart’s website, where the retailer is showing the 32GB Nexus 7 as “in stock.”

We thought maybe Office Depot accidentally released the new product a bit early at first, but the Walmart listings definitely prove that it’s no mistake. Walmart shows the two tablets in stock and ready to ship, and they can arrive on your doorstep as early as Wednesday if you choose rush shipping. Otherwise, standard shipping will have one at your house by November 6 (if you order it today).

Unfortunately, Google hasn’t yet recognized the release of the 32GB model or the price drop of the 16GB version. We’re guessing that they were going to officially announce it today during a planned Android event, but that was cancelled over the weekend due to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.

Google was also expected to announce a larger Nexus tablet from Samsung, dubbed the Nexus 10, as well as the Nexus 4 smartphone from LG. We’re not sure when Google will have their Android event, but it will definitely stay postponed until Hurricane Sandy dies down. We’ll be posting a rundown later today that details all of the Android releases, rumors, and leaks from the past few days, so stay tuned.
