Bumpin’ Pumpkin Sound System is Perfect for Halloween Parties

What party would be complete this time of the year without the a sound system made from pumpkins? Don’t let its looks deceive you, because these speakers pack a powerful punch.

Pumpkin Sound SystemThey’re essentially hollowed-out pumpkins that have been outfitted with a car stereo by Steve Meade. It might look like a simple process, but a lot of work actually went into assembling these things. Aside from hollowing out the pumpkins and carving them with the shapes of the car stereo parts, there’s also the matter of installing the actual parts and wiring everything up.

The result, of course, is nothing short of amazing. Too bad this sound system will rot within a couple of days after it was put together.

Here’s a video of these 500-watt speakers in action:

PSY Flash Drive Stores Data to the Beat of Gangnam Style

PSY’s Gangnam Style has taken over the world. It’s currently the third most-viewed video ever on YouTube and it has spawned countless memes and video parodies to date. And wouldn’t you know? Fueling the craze even further is the fact that PSY now has a USB drive designed and fashioned to his image.

Gangnam Style USB2

I think it’s safe to say that his viral hit has just taken him on a whole, new level. How many other artists can say that some folks made a flash drive that looked like them after just one huge hit? I’d say only a handful of them could.

Gangnam Style USB Drive

They can’t dance and they can’t sing, but they certainly capture the true look and essence of PSY. At least, in my opinion.

These flash drives are available from USBGeek in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities. The drives are priced from $17 to $35, depending on the capacity you get.

Watch Nerdery: Up Close With The New Seiko “Orange Monster”

Seiko-SRP313-watch

If you know me, you know two things about me: I love watches and I smell, faintly, of ferret. That’s why I’d like to share my excitement at this review of the new Seiko SRP313K1 “Orange Monster,” one of the nicest and least expensive automatic diving watches you can buy.

I’m a huge fan of the Seiko Orange Monster. It’s a perfect “first watch” for a beginning collector and at about $300 it’s not very expensive. It has a solid case and bezel, a very legible face, excellent lume, and the band can last years. In fact, my Dad’s old Seiko diver from the 1970s had a rubber band that finally snapped in 2009. These new models are on par in terms of quality and durability.

The new divers in this series have an improved movement, the 4R36. This movement has a “hacking” seconds hand – that is you can stop it when you pull the crown all the way out, thereby allowing you and your crack commando unit that was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit to synchronize your watches. This model also allows you to hand-wind the movement, a valuable feature if you plan on setting this automatic down for a longer length of time.

The “New Monster” comes in multiple face styles including traditional orange with silver bezel, orange with black bezel, and a weird sunburst style that is a bit jarring to my purist’s sensibilities. I’ve found it for $289 online but expect it to be fairly hard to find in the U.S. until Seiko finally realizes that no one wants quartz dress watches that sell for $500 at Zales and instead wants these things. Seiko so rarely brings their truly great watches to the U.S. (I would kill to get a Golgo 13 watch, for example) so if you can spot one of these and it’s under $300 you should probably pick it up.

You can read the full review of the New “Orange Monster” here but I’ll try to pick one up to talk about for our upcoming gift guide. You know, for science.

BlackBerry 10 enters testing with RIM’s carrier partners

While there’s still a lot we don’t know about BlackBerry 10 (like its release date), RIM CEO Thorsten Heins delivered some very encouraging news today. In a new statement, RIM’s head honcho said that the new mobile operating system and some of the devices it runs on have entered testing with a number of the company’s carrier partners. This suggests that RIM is still on track to launch BlackBerry 10 in Q1 2013.

In fact, Heins even reiterated that Q1 2013 launch window in his statement. “In the last week, BlackBerry 10 achieved lab entry with more than 50 carriers, a key step in our preparedness for the launch of BlackBerry 10 in the first quarter of 2013,” Heins said. According to him, this testing process will continue over the next few months, with RIM bringing on even more carrier partners around the world to try out and certify BlackBerry 10 for use on their networks.

Make no mistake, RIM has a lot riding on BlackBerry 10. If the new OS and the devices that go along with it fail to impress, it’s going to be nearly impossible for RIM to climb out of this rut it’s fallen in. Luckily, developers seem to really like BlackBerry 10, and that’s definitely a good sign.

Of course, selling consumers on BlackBerry 10 is another thing entirely, and we have a feeling that will be much harder for the beleaguered RIM. For what it’s worth, however, things are looking pretty good in the lead up to release, and we’re excited to see what kind of new ideas BlackBerry 10 brings to the table when it finally arrives. Do you think BlackBerry 10 is going to sink or swim?

RIM's latest milestone: BlackBerry 10 now being tested by over 50 carriers

Not much is going to make us excited about the BlackBerry world until RIM’s latest devices actually ship, but today’s announcement from Thorsten Heins is certainly good news in that regard. Today, he revealed that BlackBerry 10 units are now in the testing labs of more than 50 carriers, a necessary milestone that suggests the first BlackBerry 10 devices are still on track for a Q1 2013 debut. Naturally, it’s a shame that the company is going to miss the holiday season, but if you have a BlackBerry fan in your life, we suppose there’s always room for an IOU in their stocking. In the meantime, you’ll find the full statement from RIM’s CEO after the break.

John Koster, GOP House Candidate: ‘The Rape Thing’ Does Not Excuse Abortions

John Koster, a Republican congressional candidate in Washington state, said Sunday that “the rape thing” is not a good enough reason for a woman to have an abortion, the Associated Press reported.

Asked at a campaign fundraiser whether he supports abortion rights in some situations, Koster replied that he only supports abortion in cases where a woman’s life is in danger.

“Incest is so rare, I mean, it’s so rare,” he said. “But the rape thing– you know, I know a woman who was raped and kept the child, gave it up for adoption, and she doesn’t regret it.”

New Jersey Congressional Candidates Campaign Carefully Around Hurricane Sandy

With storm assessments declaring New Jersey the hardest-hit state by Hurricane Sandy, politicians face a delicate balance of staying in the public eye without politicizing tragedy.

The race for the 9th Congressional District seat in northern New Jersey between Rep. Bill Pascrell (D) and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach (R) provides a case in point.

With electricity outages in much of the area, finding a place to recharge computers and cell phones is important to stay connected.

Engadget gets animated Gadget, Where Are You video

Gh-gh-ghosts? Cuomo: New York Homeowners Should Not Have To Pay Hurricane Deductibles

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday afternoon that New York homeowners affected by Hurricane Sandy should not be subject to hurricane deductibles — potentially large sums of money homeowners often must pay before post hurricane insurance kicks in.

“Homeowners should not have to pay hurricane deductibles for damage caused by the storm and insurers should understand the Department of Financial Services will be monitoring how claims are handled,” Cuomo said, according to a statement.

While most home insurance deductibles are flat fees of around $500 to $1,000, hurricane deductibles generally demand homeowners to pay anywhere from 1 to 5 percent of the property’s value up front. New York is one of 18 states that permit insurance companies to charge hurricane deductibles.

Chris Christie, Governor Of New Jersey, Says The Jersey Shore Will Never Be The Same — Share Your Memories With Us

President Obama and Gov. Chris Christie toured the destruction caused by superstorm Sandy by helicopter today, taking in the overwhelming devastation on the Jersey shore. They landed in Belmar, where the historic boardwalk was destroyed, and flew over Seaside Heights — where the governor spent his childhood summers — and where he saw the local carnival’s roller coaster floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Homes torn from their foundations littered the highways in Lavalette and Ortley Beach.

“I never thought I would see what I saw today — ever,” Christie told reporters. “It’s a site of devastation that makes it look like a bomb went off there.” Damage estimates caused by superstorm Sandy haven’t been tallied yet, but is expected to be unprecedented.

The governor says that the Jersey Shore will be rebuilt, but will never be the same. Huff/Post50 senior writer Ann Brenoff recalls summers spent at Max’s Hot Dogs in Long Branch and the Windmill, “which had the best burgers around,” she said. “I remember going down to West End in Long Branch as a teenager, ending prom night at The Inkwell. Summers of my childhood were spent with my family — and every other family from Newark’s Weequahic section — in Bradley Beach, where we’d rent a little bungalow and all the kids played together under the boardwalk. My first reporting jobs were at the Jersey shore. It’s so hard to imagine that places like Keyport and Sea Bright appear to exist in name only now.”
