Who knew Russell Brand was friends with David Beckham?

The comedian, 37, cheered on the soccer stud alongside his wife Victoria Beckham and their kids at the LA Galaxy match against the Seattle Sounders at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, Calif., yesterday (Oct. 28). Joining him was Becks’ good pal, chef Gordon Ramsay, and his wife Tana, as well as chef Giada de Laurentiis and her daughter Jade, 4.

Brand made small talk with Ramsay while he concentrated on the regular-season finale game, which Galaxy ended up winning 1-0.

European Union to spend $900 million on world’s most powerful lasers

Doctor Evil would be thrilled at what the European Union is set to spend $900 million on. The EU will spend $900 million to build the world’s most powerful laser hoping that the technology can destroy nuclear waste and possibly provide new cancer treatments. The project is called the Extreme Light Infrastructure project and the $900 million in funding will be used to build two lasers.

The lasers will be built in the Czech Republic and Romania according to a spokesperson for the European Commission on regional policy named Shirin Wheeler. A third research center will also be constructed in Hungary under the plan. The lasers to be built will be 10 times more powerful than any laser built to date.

The lasers are expected to be powerful enough to create subatomic particles in vacuum. Supporters of the project hope that eventually laser beams would be powerful enough to be used to deteriorate the radioactivity of nuclear waste in a few seconds and to target cancerous tumors. Nicolae-Victor Zamfir is a Romanian coordinator for the project and he says that the team expects the first results from research within one or two years after the center becomes operational.

The Romanian laser will be located at the Magurele research center and will consume 10 MW of energy. That is enough energy to supply 2500 average homes in the US. The massive amount of power will come from geothermal pumps installed at the site expected to become operational in 2017.

Seidio OBEX case for the Galaxy S3

So you have decided to get yourself a spanking new smartphone, and have made up your mind to roll with Samsung and their Galaxy S3 this time around after being stuck on Apple’s ecosystem for a fair number of years already. Well, to make sure that you are able to eke out the most from the Samsung Galaxy S3, accessorizing it might be a good idea – and getting a decent protective case for the Galaxy S3 makes perfect sense. The Seidio OBEX case for the Galaxy S3 does seem to be a pretty decent, although some say that it is rather high end, case for the handset. The thing is, the Seidio OBEX case was specially designed to be far tougher than your average phone case, so it makes perfect sense to give a premium handset the best protection you can possibly afford.

The Seidio OBEX case has started to ship, where it is said to deliver the “ultimate protection” against unforeseen circumstances such as drops from butterfingers like me, as well as external elements like water snow, mud, dust and sand. There must be a reason why this puppy was named OBEX, where it is actually Latin for “Barrier” – how fitting, considering it does its best to ensure the safety of your spanking new Galaxy S3.

David Chang, CEO of Seidio, said, “We’ve [Seidio] spent months carefully designing the OBEX, and putting it through a series of rigorous tests. Combining the finest materials, advanced protection technology, and a meticulous design- we are confident that the OBEX will completely safeguard the Galaxy S III anytime, anywhere.”

The Seidio OBEX is said to be waterproof, where it not only meets but exceeds the IP68 rating, literally allowing you to immerse the Samsung Galaxy S3 in water up to 2 meters deep for half an hour, without having your flagship device short circuiting or experiencing anything untoward. After all, water and electronics have never been the best of friends. The waterproof membranes are said to guarantee external matter will be unable to penetrate the phone’s speakers or microphone, affecting sound quality.

The asking price for the Seidio OBEX case for the Galaxy S3 is $79.95 – rather pricey, but at least it is cheaper than buying a new phone when you accidentally let your Galaxy S3 sleep with the fishes.

President Obama, Romney Could Remake Law Enforcement With Key Appointments

(Repeats with no changes to text)

* Holder unlikely to serve full second term

* FBI job due to open up in 2013

By David Ingram

WASHINGTON, Oct 29 (Reuters) – The winner of the U.S. presidential election will have an opportunity to remake law enforcement with his choices for two top jobs – attorney general and FBI director – which could become vacant within months of each other in 2013.

Attorney General Eric Holder has not publicly ruled out serving at least part of a second term if President Barack Obama wins re-election on Nov. 6 and wants to keep him in place. Obama was to have filled the FBI job in 2011 but postponed the appointment, persuading Congress to extend the term of Director Robert Mueller by two years, until September 2013.

Campaign advisers to Republican challenger Mitt Romney have drawn up lists of potential nominees for both jobs, as well as for other Justice Department positions that require confirmation by the Senate, people familiar with the situation said.

Those discussed for attorney general in a Romney administration include former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, head of the Chertoff Group consulting firm; former Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip, since moved to the law firm Kirkland & Ellis; former White House Deputy Counsel David Leitch, general counsel at Ford Motor Co; and J. Michael Luttig, general counsel at Boeing Co.

Former deputy attorneys general George Terwilliger, who is joining the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, and Larry Thompson, general counsel at PepsiCo Inc, are also mentioned.

Former Solicitor General Paul Clement of the Bancroft law firm, best known for arguing in March against Obama’s healthcare law, and former acting Attorney General Peter Keisler, now at the Sidley Austin law firm, are talked about for attorney general or for a judgeship.

All served in the George W. Bush administration except for Luttig and Terwilliger, who served under George H.W. Bush. Romney’s campaign has listed Chertoff, Filip and Terwilliger as advisers.

Romney could turn to a governor, such as Virginia’s Bob McDonnell, or a senator, such as retiring Jon Kyl of Arizona, if he wants an attorney general with more political experience.

“The governor is focused solely on his job as chief executive of the commonwealth,” said McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin. Other possible candidates for both jobs declined to comment or did not respond to requests.

A Romney campaign spokeswoman had no comment on appointments.

WILL HOLDER GO?

Obama’s decision for attorney general would be less pressing if he were to win a second term, because Holder could presumably stay on until a replacement is named. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is most often mentioned as a possible successor to Holder.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, also frequently mentioned as a future Obama attorney general, brushed off Washington in an interview this month with the Financial Times. He told the newspaper that the politics-obsessed U.S. capital is “not quite my cup of tea.”

Republicans have tried to push Holder from office because of Operation Fast and Furious, a botched operation that targeted gun smuggling along the United States-Mexico border. An inspector general report in September cleared Holder of wrongdoing.

Only one attorney general, Janet Reno during Bill Clinton’s presidency, served close to two full terms in the modern era.

For director of the FBI, there is some overlap between the Obama and Romney camps. Possible candidates for either administration include Patrick Fitzgerald, a former U.S. attorney in Chicago who recently joined the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and Kenneth Wainstein, a former assistant attorney general for national security now at the law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. Other possible Romney candidates for the FBI job include Filip and Terwilliger.

Obama’s choices two years ago were said to include former Deputy Attorney General Jim Comey, the general counsel at hedge fund Bridgewater Associates; John Pistole, head of the Transportation Security Administration; and Michael Mason, a former top FBI official now at Verizon Communications Inc.

A White House spokesman had no comment on appointments.

Presidential candidates were once criticized as presumptuous for drawing up lists of possible cabinet members.

But thinking has changed because of the need for continuity between administrations. In 2010, Obama signed a law that, for the first time, formally provides office space, security clearances and other resources to someone in Romney’s position.

A transition from Obama to Romney would witness three distinct waves of new staffers coming into the administration: those who plan the takeover from November to January, those who enter government offices on Inauguration Day Jan. 20, and those who begin later, after Senate confirmation.

BROAD PORTFOLIO

The appointments will give the election’s winner two primary opportunities to enact his agenda. Democrats traditionally use the Justice Department to reinforce such areas as civil rights and consumer protection, while Republicans often emphasize drug enforcement and the vetting of nominees for federal courts.

The department determines which side the government will take in court on subjects such as same-sex marriage, abortion and affirmative action to secure racial diversity.

The contrasting priorities are rarely mentioned during the U.S. presidential campaign, despite the broad portfolio.

Democratic Vice President Joe Biden offered a rare indication of the stakes in July when he asked the NAACP, the largest U.S. civil rights group, to “imagine what the Romney Justice Department will look like.”

The two sides are “fundamentally different,” he said.

Republicans have accused Obama’s Justice Department of improperly considering race in cases showing a “disparate impact” among racial groups, and of unfairly burdening business.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told a business conference on Wednesday that the Justice Department was taking too long on corporate investigations, creating uncertainty.

Only a “different view from the Justice Department” would improve matters, said Giuliani, a Republican who once served in the department’s No. 3 position. (Additional reporting by Nate Raymond; Editing by Howard Goller and Amy Stevens; desking by Christopher Wilson)

FreedomPop ships its 4G-enabling iPod touch case, lets us nearly go phoneless for $99 (update: plan clarifications)

FreedomPop ships its 4Genabling iPod touch case, lets us nearly go phoneless for $99

FreedomPop’s gamble on free WiMAX data launched in beta at the start of month, but early adopters had to be contented with conventional hotspots and modems at first; those of us with a fixation on data-only cellular handsets had to keep waiting. We can stay slightly cooler-headed now that the provider is shipping its iPod touch 4G Sleeve. Shelling out $99 grafts a 4G hotspot to the back of the fourth-generation media player that gives it independence from WiFi as well as connection sharing with eight other devices — at least, for anyone willing to burn through that 500MB of free monthly data in record time. About the only catches are the $10 per gigabyte overage fee and a design that’s just slightly behind the times for iPod addicts. While some of us will still cling to smartphones for coverage or legacy reasons, others who mostly communicate through Instagram food photos could have that excuse they need to drop cellular phone service once and for all.

Update: Thanks to reader (and early adopter) Penn who pointed out that overages are $20 per gigabyte if you’re on the free plan — it’s only $10 if you’re a regularly paying customer.

Three Months After The First Teaser, FreedomPop Begins Shipping Its $99 WiMAX-Friendly iPod Touch Cases

podcase1

Freemium wireless Internet startup FreedomPop made good on its word by kicking off its public beta earlier this month and hocking USB modems and mobile hotspots, but that launch left many of its would-be users asking one question: Where are the iPhone and iPod touch cases the company unveiled all those months ago?

Well, that wait is over… for some people, anyway. FreedomPop has just announced that its WiMAX-capable iPod touch cases are now shipping, and will set potential users back a cool $99 should they decide to take the plunge.

For that $99, users get a plump piece of molded plastic (expect it to bring your iPod up to the size of an iPhone 3GS) that should convert that WiMAX signal to Wi-Fi for between six and eight hours before needing a recharge. As always, FreedomPop users start out with a free monthly data allotment of 500MB, and can score even more data by shelling out for a monthly data plan or forging social connections with other FreedomPop users.

FreedomPop’s plans to monetize the service actually extend beyond that seemingly simple approach with value-added features like the ability to pay extra to ensure the best data speeds, though it’s what’s on the horizon that has the potential to really change the game. Persistent rumors eventually gave way to confirmation that the fledgling company was looking to launch its own VoIP app to further blur the line between iPod touches and honest-to-goodness iPhones.

It doesn’t sound like a bad deal at all— especially for the younger set who can neither afford nor qualify for a more standard wireless data contract — but there are some caveats. To wit: the iPod sleeve is only officially compatible with the 3rd and 4th generation iPod touches. And of course there’s the coverage issue to contend with, since network partner Clearwire doesn’t have the biggest wireless footprint in the world (though the company will eventually push out hardware that plays nice with Sprint’s 3G and LTE networks).

Meanwhile, iPhone owners still a bit of a wait ahead of them before they get their crack at free WiMAX data — that same source told TechCrunch that those devices are “in the final stages of production,” with pre-ordered units going out to the service’s earlier adopters over the coming weeks. After that, FreedomPop expects to “officially launch” the iPhone case to the masses by the end of November, a move that reportedly involves some key retail deals that should see the sleeves onto a “major online retailer’s” virtual shelves in time for the holidays.
