Chrono Trigger finally makes its way onto Android

Good news Android gamers, if you were jealous of your iPhone friends for having Square Enix’s Chrono Trigger, you don’t have to be anymore as Square Enix has officially released Chrono Trigger for Android. Yup it looks like after almost every platform out there got to enjoy the game, it has finally been released for Android gamers. To top it off, this version of Chrono Trigger has additional areas from its Nintendo DS release – the Dimensional Vortex and the Lost Sanctum. As expected of Square Enix, Chrono Trigger will not be one of those 99 cent games and it will cost you $9.99. Might seem a bit more expensive compared to other games but if you want to relive the good old days on your Android device, perhaps the $9.99 price tag might be justifiable. Chrono Trigger is available for download via Google Play.

Leaked Grand Theft Auto 5 promo materials point at Spring 2013 release

A couple of weeks ago, an analyst predicted that Rockstar’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto 5 will be dropping come March 2013. Well thanks to what appears to be leaked promotional items for the game, it looks like that March 2013 timeframe could be right on the money, or at least close. The promotional material (pictured) above is thanks to Polish website, gta-five.pl, who managed to get their hands on the photos. As you  can see, the poster reads “pre-order now” followed by “Spring 2013”, which we are taking to mean a possible release date. We have seen many retailers hedge their bets on when the game will be released, along with a slew of analysts who offered up various dates, but so far these leaked promotional materials seem to be the most legit piece of evidence we’ve seen to date. However since there is no official word from Rockstar yet, we suggest you not read too much into this for now and take it with a grain of salt.

Cassini spies massive atmospheric discharge on Saturn

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has been observing Saturn and has recorded enormous disturbances in the upper atmosphere of the ringed planet. The disturbances in the upper atmosphere were so massive that it set records as some of the largest storms ever seen on the planet. According to the scientists, the composite infrared spectrometer instrument on Cassini noted that the powerful atmospheric discharge pushed the temperature in Saturn’s stratosphere 150°F above normal.

The scientists also note that they detected a huge increase in the quantity of ethylene gas in the upper atmosphere during the discharge. Where exactly that huge amount of ethylene gas came from is unknown. Ethylene is said to be a strange gas to find on Saturn.

The gas is colorless, odorless, and is rarely found on Saturn. The gas is associated with biological processes here on earth. To make the discovery of the massive atmospheric discharge even more baffling, scientists report that the temperature spike was so extreme as to border on “unbelievable.” The discharge occurred in a portion of Saturn’s atmosphere that is typically very stable.

To illustrate the extreme temperature change associated with the atmospheric discharge the scientists attempted to put things in perspective for us. According to scientist Brigitte Hesman, the temperature change equates to going from the deepest and coldest part of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska to the height of summer in the Mojave Desert here on earth. The storm that caused the massive atmospheric discharge was first observed by Cassini in the northern hemisphere of Saturn on December 5, 2010. The ethylene gas discharge peaked at levels 100 times higher than scientists believed was possible on Saturn.

iPad Mini Ship Times Now At Two Weeks For All Wi-Fi Models

Screen Shot 2012-10-26 at 10.07.00 AM

Apple’s iPad mini shipping times have slipped to a minimum of two weeks across the board, including for Wi-Fi only versions, which were the only ones initially set for an earlier, November 2 delivery. The white version actually sold out fastest, with pre-order ship times dropping to two weeks just 20 minutes or so after pre-orders began Friday morning at 12 AM PT/3 AM ET.

How does that compare with previous product launches? Well, the initial stock of iPhone 5s sold out in just about an hour, but pre-orders of the 3rd generation iPad with Retina Display released in March took a couple of days to sell out completely. Apple began taking pre-orders the day it unveiled the  ”new iPad” on March 7, and they were out of initial stock by March 9. In other words, the iPad mini seems to be on pace with Apple’s tablet sales standards so far, though we won’t know about how much stock was available at launch for at least a little while yet.

On Thursday’s conference call discussing Apple’s quarterly earnings, CEO Tim Cook came back again and again to the challenges of iPad mini manufacturing, and how that affected gross margins. That might also indicate that we’ll see supply constraints early on, with demand outpacing supply (nothing new for an Apple product launch, of course). But regardless of initial shipping volumes, the iPad mini selling out initial supplies over a weekend provides some early evidence that some critics’ claims of Apple pricing itself out of market with the $329 iPad mini are likely unfounded.

As for why the white mini was so quick to sell out, judging by how long it took the black and slate version to get there, it looks like Apple could have a much more limited supply of the white version. It’ll be interesting to see in what ratios the different versions hit stores, and whether perhaps there are supply or manufacturing challenges around the white model.

Steve Jobs’ yacht Venus officially revealed to the public

Back in April this year, renowned designer Philippe Starck revealed that he was working on a revolutionary project for Apple, which was later revealed to be a project not for Apple, but for Apple’s late co-founder, Steve Jobs. The project was for a yacht and for those who are curious as to how the final product might look like, the yacht, dubbed Venus, has officially been unveiled in the Netherlands. As expected from Philippe Starck and Steve Jobs, the design of the yacht is very clean, sleek and minimalist. Roughly 80 meters long, the hull of the yacht is reportedly made from aluminum, huge plate windows, and unsurprisingly running on 27” iMacs complete with navigational and other seafaring software. In any case it seems like a pity that Jobs did not get to enjoy his yacht, but presumably he enjoyed the process of designing it according to a quote from his biography, “I didn’t think I would be alive when it got done, […] But that made me so sad, and I decided that working on the design was fun to do, and maybe I have a shot at being alive when it’s done.” In the meantime you can check out additional photos and coverage over at OneMoreThing.nl.

AU Optronics reveals 4.46″ HD display with 1mm border

If you own an iPad, then the company AU Optronics might be one familiar to you as they are one of the suppliers for Apple’s iPads’ display. Well recently the company has announced a 4.46” HD display with 317ppi and a 1mm border surrounding it, giving the impression that the display is larger than it really is. This is possible thanks to the company’s proprietary super narrow border technology and low-temperature poly-silicon method. As for the quality of the display, it uses AMOLED, IGZO and AHVA technologies. At the same time AU Optronics has also revealed a 10” IGZO display with a rather impressive resolution of 2560×1600 and a border of 1.5mm, which could lead to some pretty thin devices. We’re not sure who will be picking up AU Optronics’ displays, but perhaps we could be seeing them used in next year’s iPad.

Nexus 3 device revealed in photo’s EXIF data

While it’s more or less confirmed that LG’s Nexus handset will be known as the Nexus 4, we have to wonder were there devices before it called the Nexus 1, 2 or 3? It has been deduced that Google has been naming their products according to its screen size, i.e. Nexus 7 and the rumored Nexus 10, suggesting that the Nexus 4 will sport a 4”+ display, which according to all the leaks has “confirmed” this. So if there were a Nexus 3, would that mean a 3” display? Perhaps it might just be a codename but a device by that name was recently discovered on John Mueller’s (a Google employee) Google+ page. A photo taken was uploaded and according to its EXIF data, it was taken by a device called the Nexus 3.

Of course there is always the possibility that the EXIF data could have been faked, but until it has been proven otherwise, it looks like there is another Nexus handset floating about out there. Admirably whoever made this device did a much better job compared to LG in keeping the leaks in check. If you recall, there were rumors not too long ago that there could be multiple Nexus handsets this year, so it is possible that the Nexus 3 might be one of them. In any case with Google’s Android event having been cancelled due to the weather, we guess we won’t be finding out today, but what do you guys think?

Steve Jobs’ yacht makes its first official appearance

Back in April we mentioned that word surfaced that designer Philippe Starck was working on a project for Apple. The fact that the famous designer was working on a project by Apple was quickly denied by Starck himself who admitted that he was working on a project involving Steve Jobs’ private yacht. The yacht has been under construction by a Dutch company known for custom yachts called Feadship.

The private yacht is now apparently complete and has been spied for the first time in the Dutch city of Aalsmeer. The gigantic boat certainly looks like something Steve Jobs would have designed with a minimalist look, lots of glass, and very clean lines. The yacht has reportedly been christened the Venus.

It rather looks like a floating Apple Store with lots of glass and shiny metal. The yacht appears to be quite massive dwarfing the people around it looking more like a cruise ship than a personal yacht. The Jobs family was said to be on hand for the unveiling of the massive ship measuring 80 m long.

Naturally, the command deck of the ship where the controls are housed uses iMac computers to show virtual gauges. There are seven of the 27-inch iMac computers in the wheelhouse. I’ve seen some impressive yachts over the years packed with technology, but the Venus is certainly my favorite.

Office Depot and GameStop drops Nexus 7 16GB price to $199

Google’s incoming 32GB Nexus 7 may be one of its worst kept secrets, with most estimates (and those leaks) pointing to a $249 price tag and a launch date later this week. However, it also appears that the 16GB model will drop its price down to $199, according to leaked images from both Office Depot and GameStop — great news for anyone who’s so far held off from grabbing the first Nexus tablet. While an official announcement’s been delayed by the forces of nature, we expect to hear more from Google sooner rather than later.
