Titan supercomputer goes live with potent CPU/GPU tag team

The Titan supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been upgraded, tackling complex climate change calculations with 20 petaflops worth of new processors. Under the (considerable) hood its NVIDIA’s “Kepler” GPUs and AMD Opetron 6274 processors doing the heavy lifting, though NVIDIA can’t resist pointing out that its graphics chips are in fact carrying 90-percent of the overall load. The GPUs, more commonly found powering gaming rigs, help make Titan “the world’s fastest supercomputer for open scientific research.”

That research will include simulating physical systems, such as weather patterns, or progressions in energy, climate change, efficient engines, materials, and other fields. However, unlike most supercomputers, where access is jealously guarded, Titan takes a more open approach to access.

Researchers from schools and universities, government labs, and private industry can access Titan – by arrangement, of course – to crunch their own data. Final testing is still underway by the laboratory and Cray, and the supercomputer’s first year will be dominated by work on the Department of Energy’s Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program.

“The improvements in simulation fidelity will accelerate progress in a wide range of research areas such as alternative energy and energy efficiency, the identification and development of novel and useful materials and the opportunity for more advanced climate projections” James Hack, director of ORNL’s National Center for Computational Sciences, said of the new machine.

In total, there are 299,008 CPU cores, sixteen to each of 18,688 nodes; each node also has an NVIDIA Tesla K20 graphics accelerator. The cores are used to guide the simulations, while the GPUs are relied upon to do the actual data crunching; altogether, it’s more than 10x faster and 5x more power efficient than the Jaguar supercomputer Titan replaces.

In fact, Titan can simulate 1-5 years per day of computing time, whereas Jaguar took a day to work through around three months worth of data. ORNL says it’s the equivalent of “the world’s 7 billion people being able to carry out 3 million calculations per second.”

Valve opens Steam for Linux beta registration, wants pros only

Right on schedule (ahem), Valve has begun requesting applications for the first Steam for Linux beta test. There are only 1,000 spots available, but the company is looking for “experienced Linux users” only — presumably, ones that will be better at debugging than spilling zombie brains. So, if you’ve got a rig running Ubuntu 12.04 or above and decent Linux knowledge, head to the source link to register your interest.

Amazon slams iPad mini in Kindle Fire HD attack ad

Amazon has directly called out Apple’s new iPad mini in a homepage attack advert, criticizing the new 7.9-inch iOS tablet for falling short in specifications versus the Kindle Fire HD. The comparison, seen when you first visit Amazon’s US site, contrasts the $199 Kindle Fire HD with its 216ppi, 7-inch display against the $329 iPad mini, which has a 163ppi display. That’s not the only shortcoming, Amazon maintains.

The Kindle Fire HD also has a set of stereo speakers, while the iPad mini makes do with mono, and MiMo WiFi for faster connections, Amazon writes. The retailer also points out that the new, smaller iPad can’t watch HD movies and TV shows, though of course that’s a limitation solely of the Apple tablet’s integrated display: it can also be used to stream at up to 1080p via AirPlay Video, or with an HDMI adapter for directly hooking up to a TV.

It’s not the first time in recent days that Amazon has singled out Apple’s new tablet. The company made similar comparisons in its financial results, published on Thursday last week. “Our approach is to work hard to charge less” CEO Jeff Bezos argued. “Sell devices near breakeven and you can pack a lot of sophisticated hardware into a very low price point.”

Still, the retailer has Apple’s own example to go on. The company directly contrasted the iPad mini with Google’s Nexus 7 during its launch event last week, calling out the smaller display and larger bezels of the Android slate.

Preorders of the iPad mini began on Friday last week, with deliveries – and in-store sales – of the WiFi variant set to begin this coming Friday. Shipments of the WiFi + Cellular model will begin later in November.

US Navy laser a couple of years away

US Navy logoA battleship or aircraft carrier with laser guns? This sounds right out of a science fiction movie, but that age of naval warfare could very well happen in just a couple of years’ time if the Navy has their way. Basically, the US Navy’s plan for “directed energy” (their slang for laser cannons) is said to be two years away from reality, at least according to Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, the chief of the Office of Naval Research. This is definitely a huge step forward, considering how earlier estimates from Klunder’s laser technicians point towards a four year time window.

Klunder continued, “We’re well past physics. We’re just going through the integration efforts,” Klunder continued. Hopefully, that tells you we’re well mature, and we’re ready to put these on naval ships.”

The whole thing that remains would be whether the naval vessel’s power requirements will be able to integrated the directed energy system or railgun system, and the US Navy will remain on the cutting edge of the world’s naval powers. Something tells me that burning coal is not going to make the cut, and nuclear power will have a very strong say in the scheme of things.

Microsoft Surface pre-orders canceled?

We are currently hammering away at our Microsoft Surface tablet review, but we do feel for some of the folks out there who reported that the pre-orders which they have placed for the Surface tablet? Those have apparently been canceled by Microsoft, without any real explanation being given by the software giant. Mark of WP7.nl claimed to have received an email from Microsoft that reads as follows :-

I ordered mine on 10/18 and it was cancelled by Microsoft on 10/27:

The following item(s) have been cancelled from your order:

Product SKU: Z2S-00002

Product Name: Surface HD Digital AV Adapter Qty Ordered: 1 Reason for cancellation: Other

Product SKU: 9HR-00026

Product Name: Surface with Windows RT

Qty Ordered: 1

Reason for cancellation: Other

Hopefully this has nothing to do with production issues, as it is not too often that a company has such goodwill among consumers or the community to have not enough quantities of a highly anticipated device being made available to the masses. Anyone else had their pre-order given the cold shoulder?

Sony C660X Yuga images spotted?

What you see above are touted to be leaked shots of the soon to come Sony C660X Yuga taken by a tech ninja, where we are left with just a couple of teaser snippets. One of them depicts the top of the device, carrying the Sony logo, while the other image is widely believed to depict the rear end of the device. Of course, as is customary with most of the spy shots taken by someone on the inside, these images are blurry – or in this case, of such low resolution, that we cannot really garner too much information from it. There does seem to be the front-camera and earpiece placement that is not found on any Xperia branded device to date.

Whispers have it that the Sony C660X Yuga’s back will be made out of glass, similar to how the iPhone 4/4S looks like, in all 8mm glory – or perhaps less. Now I’m running scared of cracking it in half when I place it in my jeans pocket, how about you?

Sony Xperia Tablet S sales to resume soon

It was earlier in October that the Sony Xperia Tablet S was said to experience a manufacturing error that resulted in the purported tablet’s waterproof capability being gimped – basically, a gap has occurred between the display and the back of the unit, allowing water as well as other liquids (such as coffee and Coke) to the Xperia S’s inner sanctum, understandably short circuiting whatever is in there along the way. This was discovered by the folks at Sony, who then promptly halted the sales of the Xperia S – after 100,000 of those tablets had been shipped worldwide. Sony mentioned that they will spare no expense to repair all of the defective tablets without the customer having to fork out a single cent, and will also offer a free inspection for folks who picked up the Xperia S before sales of it were halted.

What happens to those who took the water resistant claims seriously and tested it, only to find that the Xperia Tablet S did not live up to expectations? Well, we are not too sure about that, but it seems that the manufacturing issue has been fixed, and the Sony online store in the US has listed the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models under the “Coming Soon” segment.
