Verizon Nokia Lumia 822 and HTC 8X to launch this November 8th?

Verizon does seem to be doing its bit to bring more Windows Phone 8 goodness to the masses, and it does seem as though the Lumia 822 and HTC 8X with the latter coming in a shade of California Blue is set for a release this coming November 8th from the wireless carrier. Both smartphones can be spotted in the leaked photo above, where they carry Verizon’s logo and name. One has to bear in mind that the Nokia Lumia 822 is definitely a Verizon exclusive, so it is a given.

It does seem to appear that the Nokia Lumia 822 will retail for $99.99 a pop with a 2-year contract, while the HTC 8X will cost $199.99 for a similar contract. There are also whispers of Verizon offering a free and yet unknown Samsung manufactured Windows Phone 8-powered device, but it will not be the Samsung ATIV S. All in all, it takes nothing but a wee bit of patience for November 8th to find out the truth.

International HTC One X receives Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update

It seems that the international version of the HTC One X will finally be on the receiving end of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. Yes, this is the quad-core processor powered One X that lacks LTE connectivity, and you will have to bear in mind that not all models of this smartphone will receive the update simultaneously, so you will just have to be patient. HTC works this way – they will release their operating system updates by region using the handset’s CID (Customer ID) number. In a nutshell, handsets with a CID of htc_612, which are sold to carriers in Taiwan, ought to have started to receive the update since last Friday.

As for HTC One X units that carry a CID of htc_044, those ought to have received the update by today if they haven’t done so already. It was earlier in October that a version of Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean was leaked for the international HTC One X, and folks who gave that unofficial version a go claimed that it was extremely smooth like butter, achieving a Quadrant Benchmark test score of 7031 in the process.

USB Futon Mouse pad, for a warmer winter!

As Lord Eddard Stark said, Winter is Coming! And the best way to get ready is, well at least in Japan, not to learn how to fight these creatures from the north, but investing in Thanko’s latest USB Futon Mouse pad warmer. Based on the “original” Japanese Futo concept this mouse pad warmer comes pretty much with everything including a cushion that will act here as a wrist rest, and get ready for a sweat or being “badly” burn since Thanko warned us that its USB …

Cray’s Jaguar supercomputer upgraded with NVIDIA Tesla GPUs, renamed Titan

Cray's Jaguar supercomputer upgraded with NVIDIA Tesla GPUs, renamed Titan

Cray’s Jaguar (or XK7) supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been loaded up with the first shipping NVIDIA Telsa K20 GPUs and renamed Titan. Loaded with 18,688 of the Kepler-based K20s, Titan’s peak performance is more than 20 petaflops. Sure, the machine has an equal number of 16-core AMD Opteron 6274 processors as it does GPUs, but the Tesla hardware packs 90 percent of the entire processing punch. Titan is roughly ten times faster and five times more energy efficient than it was before the name change, yet it fits into the same 200 cabinets as its predecessor. Now that it’s complete, the rig will analyze data and create simulations for scientific projects ranging from topics including climate change to nuclear energy. The hardware behind Titan isn’t meant to power your gaming sessions, but the NVIDIA says lessons learned from supercomputer GPU development trickle back down to consumer-grade cards. For the full lowdown on the beefed-up supercomputer, hit the jump for a pair of press releases.

Chromium OS Nexus 7 port

The Nexus 7 might be suiting up alongside the Amazon Kindle Fire HD in anticipation of the kind of competition that the iPad mini would provide, but you can be sure that this is going to be a tight battle. After all, Android has already secured more than 40% of the world’s tablet market in terms of operating systems. Developer Hexxeh has successfully managed to port Chromium OS over to the Asus-manufactured Nexus 7 tablet. Just in case you were wondering, Chromium OS is the open source version of Chrome OS, which is Google’s operating system that was specially s designed around the Chrome web browser.

Of course, you can always take the regular route of installing the Chrome browser in Android in order to experience a similar number of features, but Chromium does have its fair share of advantages. After all, it supports Chrome extensions and apps, allowing you to make use of Chrome on a mobile device in the same manner as it would on a Windows, Mac, or Linux desktop. Do bear in mind that the Chromium port for the Nexus 7 is still a raw diamond in the rough, and it will take some time to smoothen things up before it is being ready for a public release.

SurgiLux laser-activated plaster ups your healing factor

While we would all like to have the kind of healing factor that Wolverine possesses, we all know that this is but a pipe dream at the moment. What we can rely on, however, would be advances made in the medical field such as this laser-activated plaster that was specially designed to replace stitches for wounds. The “miracle” patch is known as SurgiLux, where it functions as some sort of biological Band-Aid. Using a material derived from chitin, the very same substance required for crab shells and insect exoskeletons to remain stiff and rigid, SurgiLux’s ultimate aim is to far outperform stitches or sutures for wounds and surgeries, considering how it remains atop the skin instead of threading underneath.

John Foster, a biotech researcher at the University of New South Wales who is working on SurgiLux, said, “Though sutures have a superior strength to SurgiLux, sutures are physically invasive. SurgiLux is a thin film, so you do not end up with any physical invasion or further damage to the tissue, thus allowing more complete healing.”‘

Sounds like this is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but would come in more handy for delicate operations. Even better is if this does not leave that much of scar tissue compared to regular stitches. Will the phrase “a stitch in time saves nine” be relevant should the SurgiLux surge in popularity?

Nexus 4 manual leaked

Near the end of last week, we talked about how the yet unreleased Nexus 10 from Samsung has had its manual leaked to the masses, and this time around, it seems that yet another Nexus branded device has had its manual revealed online before the intended time. We are referring to the Nexus 4 smartphone from LG, with support manuals appearing not only on LG’s Australian but UK website as well. The manuals do confirm the name Nexus 4 in addition to 8GB of internal memory, but we also know that there will also be a 16GB capacity Nexus 4 arriving in due time.

The manual does point towards an induction coil for wireless charging capability, and it is with a heavy heart that we say there will be no microSD memory card support for the Nexus 4. Will you be picking up the Nexus 4 as your next smartphone upgrade when it is finally available to the masses, or are you still holding out for perhaps Google’s very own take on the Nexus brand name?

Google cancels New York City Android event because of Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy does look set to be a big one, which is why some companies have taken precautions for tomorrow, including Google, who has canceled their Android event in New York City. Wall Street will continue operating as normal, but we do believe that most investors would prefer to stay on the sidelines. Last Friday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency because of Hurricane Sandy, and since Google’s Android event had its location at a waterfront pier, it makes perfect sense to cancel it. Google’s statement about Monday’s Android event reads as follows :-

We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more.

Bummer, right? I know that many of us are looking forward to the release of the new Nexus devices, in addition to perhaps Android 4.2, but I guess preservation of life is a whole lot more important than some gizmos.
