The Military Has Enlisted a Laser-Wielding, Paint-Stripping Robot

Anyone who’s ever done any home renovation knows what a messy job removing paint can be. But imagine that instead of a flat wall you were tasked with stripping a curvy streamlined fighter plane. And the paint you were removing was designed to endure the stresses of supersonic flight. It’s a daunting task, which is why the Air Force wants to hand the job to laser-wielding robots. More »

Galaxy Note II glows powerful in massive water art project

It’s time to bust out the fabulously gigantic smartphone known as the Samsung Galaxy Note II to bring on a rather impressive bit of interactive water art. Artists and designers at Steak Studio have used the Galaxy Note II and its build-in S-Pen to create a pool of water that blasts forth waves wirelessly, showing all manner of designs in the wetness. This project took 10 days to create and was made to cross-promote Samsung’s device and the group that’s working with it to create beautiful splashing letterforms.

What you’re seeing here is a continuation of the connections Samsung has made with artists, designers, and musicians to promote the Samsung Galaxy Note II as a creative machine. We’ve seen Kanye West, Futura 2000, and an ever-expanding collection of creative people brought in by Samsung to keep this next-generation device in the forefront of your mind – and here comes another. Steak Studio’s Director Daniel Kupfer is at the head of this project.

Kupfer made it clear that the Galaxy Note II wasn’t just a device his group was sponsored by for this video, but a device they use on the regular as well. “The Galaxy Note II is a fantastic device that gave us all the computing power required and the ease to bridge things together with zero hassle”, said Kupfer. The video you’re seeing above was created by Jam and directed by James Morton-Hamworth from Grama Film.

We’ve also got a set of reviews of the Samsung Galaxy Note II for you, starting with the International Edition review and moving on to the T-Mobile edition review as well. From there you’ll want to check our Galaxy Note II tag portal and jump on in to our giant Android portal as well!

Minecraft Reality for iOS Takes In-Game Creations to the Real World, No 3D Printing Needed

There are already a handful of ways to bring – or at least replicate – your Minecraft masterpieces to the real world. But if you’re looking for a cheap route, check out this Mojang-approved iOS app made by 13th lab. It’s called Minecraft Reality and it uses augmented reality to make the two worlds meet.

minecraft reality ios app

I have not tried the app yet, but apparently it can even scale the objects you upload relative to the real world scenery. You can also save the location of the object(s) you place so that other users of the app can see your work and vice versa.

Minecraft Reality is already on the App Store and sells for $1.99 (USD). Sadly, it’s for newer iOS devices only. It’s not compatible with the 4th gen iPod Touch and any devices that came before it, and the developer also mentioned that “most functionality is not available on iPhone 4.” Fortunately our imagination has no such system requirements. I just placed a Weeping Angel behind you.

LG Explains Reason Behind LTE Modem Of Nexus 4

More than a week ago, we were baffled when iFixit found out that the Nexus 4 actually sports a QUALCOMM WTR1605L 4G LTE chip. Turns out we were not the only “curious ones,” as the entire tech industry also took their questions to their pages. In an attempt to explain the idea behind the LTE modem, an LG spokesperson told TechRadar that the company simply wanted to provide the best possible specification for the Nexus 4. “LG utilized the same powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset as can be found in its 4G LTE product, namely the LG Optimus G,” the spokesperson said.

“This powerful chipset is only available with a combined processor and modem and cannot be implemented separately.” Although the model possesses LTE powers, the LG spokesperson explained that it can only work when combined with a signal amplifier and filter, similar to what the folks over at the XDA Developers did. This means that the Nexus 4 cannot be upgraded to 4G LTE via software updates. “With the inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, Nexus 4 therefore offers the same amazing processing performance as LG Optimus G but for the 3G market,” the spokesperson added.

Replay launches XD 720 HD action camcorder

If the offerings from GoPro or Contour just aren’t doing it for you, Replay is another action camcorder maker that aims to take on these other companies, and today they announced the XD 720 HD camcorder that Replay claims is the smallest and lightest HD camera on the market right now, “small enough to mount to a pair of sunglasses” if need be.

According to Replay, the XD 720 is about the size of a tube of lip balm and weighs just two ounces, and thanks to it’s cylindrical shape, it can easily mount in numerous configurations. It’s also made of a rugged aluminum exterior and it’s water resistant. It shoots 720p HD footage at either 30 or 60 frames per second, and can record for up to 2 hours.

Replay launched the XD 1080 camera less than a year ago, which records full 1080p HD video, but the XD 720 is both smaller and lighter, and while it maxes out at 720p, that’s usually plenty good quality for uploading to YouTube and watching on your television. While most videophiles would prefer 1080p, the XD 720 is for those who aren’t so crazy about having the best possible quality.

The camcorder has a 5MP image sensor with a non-fisheye and non-distorted lens with a 120-degree field of view. The XD 720 costs $199 and comes with a lot of goodies inside the box, including a microfiber protective pouch, ballistic carrying case, 4GB microSD card (the camera supports up to 32GB), USB cable, microUSB card reader, microSD to SD card adaptor, car power adapter, safety leash, and two mounts.

Doctor Who Exclusive Dalek Tumbler Set

Do you have an appetite on all things that have to do with the Doctor Who series? If you have answered in the affirmative, perhaps it is time to slake that thirst with the $59.99 Doctor Who Exclusive Dalek Tumbler Set. Yes sir, this bad boy will definitely scream “Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!” whenever you encounter any thirst in your throat, assuming there is some life giving water inside, of course. Having emptied a can of isotonic drink into the Doctor Who Exclusive Dalek Tumbler Set beforehand would also help a whole lot, especially when your body is gasping for electrolytes.

You can choose from five different colors – red, orange, yellow, blue, and white, although we do not think that white is a wise color option to fall back upon considering how fast and easy it will get dirty. Not only that, if you are going to fill the Doctor Who Exclusive Dalek Tumbler Set with your favorite cold beverage, you would be happy to know that it is double walled, ensuring the mercury in there remains lower for longer periods of time.
