PSA: Nexus 4 returns to Google Play at 3PM ET (update)

PSA Nexus 4 returns to Google Play at 3PM ET

Google’s been emailing some good news for those that didn’t snatch up its new smartphone within minutes of its online launch a few weeks back. Anyone that asked to be kept up-to-date with Nexus 4 news has been told that new phone stock will be available starting at 3PM ET (Noon PT) — for US customers only. We’ve also heard rumors that customers will be limited to ordering up to two phones each, but at these prices, there’s likely to be plenty of online traffic jostling for this 4.7-inch slab.

Update: As of 3:08PM ET, it looks as if the Nexus 4 is sold out. These games are no fun, now are they?

Update 2: Google has just posted this update: “Google Play is currently experiencing very high traffic. Nexus 4 is not sold out and will still be available for purchase. Please try again shortly. Thank you for your patience.” So, keep trying, we wish you luck, and let us know how you get on in comments!

Nintendo Wii Mini Announced

The Nintendo Wii Mini is official. After hearing about it yesterday, and just a few hours after Best Buy listed the device on its website, Nintendo is finally announcing the Wii Mini today. Nintendo redesigned its famous gaming console by making it smaller and cheaper for its customers. The Wii Mini focuses mainly on Wii games and it can play more than 1,400 disc-based Wii games. The console sports a matte black color with a red border on it and it will come with a Wii Remote Plus and a red Nunchuk controller.

It will be available on December 7 at a suggested retail price of just $99.99. Unfortunately, Nintendo says that it will only launch the console in Canada, with no word of a global launch. The Wii Mini also lacks Internet connectivity and it cannot play Nintendo GameCube games. “There are games in the Wii library for every type of player,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice president and general manager. “Wii Mini is a great gift for the holidays that brings everyone in the family together to play. Wii Mini has a mini price, but it’s all about big fun.”

Nintendo Wii Mini Leaks via Best Buy Canada Website

If someone on your Christmas list is interested in the Nintendo Wii, you might want to hold off purchasing for a few more weeks. A new “mini” version of the Nintendo Wii console has leaked via the Best Buy Canada website home page. There are no hard details on the console and only a small image on the sites homepage.

That little image shows a red Nintendo Wii Mini game console along with the date December 7, 2012 for launch. It looks like the square console is roughly the length of a Nintendo Wii remote on each side, and the version shown has a black case with red trim. The home page says you can pre-order the console now, but if you click the link it goes to a generic list of Nintendo Wii hardware and accessories. The Nintendo Wii Mini was nowhere to be found.

It really wouldn’t be a surprise to see Nintendo shrink down the original Wii console in an attempt to get people to buy a second console to replace the original, as well as to decrease manufacturing costs, a practice more commonly seen from Sony with their PlayStation line.

iPhone 5 helps Apple snatch US smartphone top spot says Kantar

Apple’s iPhone has retaken the top smartphone spot in the US, new stats suggest, with the iPhone 5 helping the iOS handset slip ahead of Android. Counting US sales over twelve weeks running to October 28, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says the iPhone now holds 48.1-percent of the smartphone market in the country, versus Android’s 46.7-percent. Meanwhile, while Android holds sway in most European countries, the iPhone 5′s release has seen Apple’s share take a surge.

“The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods” Dominic Sunnebo of the analysis firm said of the stats. “This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3% and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods.”

According to Kantar, 62-percent of US iPhone 5 sales were upgrades, with existing owners choosing to swap their current iPhone for the newest model. 13-percent jumped the aisle from Android, apparently, while just under half that amount defected from BlackBerry.

Although a new iPhone generally gets the mobile market moving, Apple’s decision to step up from a 3.5-inch to a 4-inch display, and its inclusion of LTE for the first time, are cited as key motivators for interest in the iPhone 5.

Earlier this month, Samsung’s Galaxy S III was crowned the world’s most popular smartphone for Q3 2012 by research firm Strategy Analytics. However, the number-crunchers warned, the iPhone 5 was likely to change that given the number of people waiting to upgrade to the new handset.

Google Play Limiting Nexus 4 Purchases To 2 Per Customer

Now this is interesting. If you’re planning to buy a lot of Nexus 4 smartphones on Google Play for Christmas, you might as well read this report. Apparently Google Play is now limiting the number of Nexus 4 units a user can buy. Not four, not three or one, but two. Just two Nexus 4 units and you’re officially out of luck. Google hasn’t confirmed the limit neither did it gave any explanation.

But perhaps, Google knew that anyone lucky enough to buy more than ten, if not a hundred Nexus 4s, can sell it at a much higher price. No question whether or not it would sell, because the Nexus 4 is one hot Android smartphone. In fact, it’s so hot that the device sold out immediately upon debut. Google even had to cancel its debut in Netherlands and Belgium due to the high demand. In case you missed our Nexus review, you can check it out here.

Meizu MX2 packs 16GHz quadcore chip, 44inch display and Jelly Bean, due midDecember

Amidst the fierce competition in the Chinese mobile market, Meizu has managed to keep up with its annual cycle to unveil its latest flagship device, the MX2. Announced at the launch event in Beijing earlier today, the MX2 comes with a Samsung-made 1.6GHz, Cortex-A9 quad-core SoC dubbed “MX5S,” along with 2GB of RAM, a 30-percent faster GPU, a 4.4-inch 347ppi (1,280 x 800) gapless display with 3.15mm bezel and efficient “New Mode 2” technology (the description of which sounds like IGZO to us), an improved eight-megapixel BSI F/2.4 camera and a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of built-in memory. There’s also a front-facing camera, dual-mic noise cancellation, MHL video output, S/PDIF audio output, a non-removable 1,800mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0 and HSPA+ radio at 2,100MHz (2G at 900/1800). As before, the white double injection-molded back cover can be taken off to access the SIM card slot, but there should also be various color options in the near future. Read on for more info, and do also check out the official introduction video after the break.
