Grand Theft Auto V petition begs Rockstar to release PC port

After Rockstar officially announced availability for Grand Theft Auto V on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, many PC gamers were dumbstruck as to why Rockstar didn’t mention a PC version. After all, the series has been alive and well on the PC ever since Grand Theft Auto III back in 2001. Now, PC gamers have taken matter into their own hands and started a petition that begs Rockstar to release a PC port of the upcoming open-world game.

Currently at the time of this writing, the petition has almost 57,000 signatures, and 100,000 signatures is the target goal. However, there’s no guarantee that the petition will even work. It wasn’t even Rockstar’s idea to start the petition, so even if 100,000 signatures are obtained, Rockstar could easily ignore it and pass on the idea of releasing GTA V for PC.

However, while the GTA series has seen PC versions for all major releases in the past, Rockstar might be headed in a different direction this time around. For what it’s worth, the studio didn’t release Red Dead Redemption to the PC platform, so it’s possible they could be having the same thoughts with GTA V.

Rockstar has said that GTA V won’t target next-generation consoles, which is why they’re sticking with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while skipping the Wii U (although that’s being discussed as a possibility, along with a PC version). Rockstar usually releases PC ports a few months after the console launch, so it’s still possible that we could see a PC version of the game hit sometime during the summer, but don’t hold your breath just yet.

ThinkGeek’s USB Portal Sentry Turret Will Protect Your Desk, Cake

ee85_portal2_sentry_turret_usb_desk_defender_pkg

Chell is standing at the edge of an bottomless pit. She sighs deeply and stares longingly across the void to the immense energy shield. She hoped there is an exit over there. Exit is a funny term, she thought. Though an exit from this room, the door is also an entrance to another puzzle room.

Remembering the warning posters a few steps back, she recalled that falling into this pit would mean game over. Death. She doesn’t want death. Not yet. She was promised cake. And with cake, comes the meeting of this facility’s creator. Then she’d find death.

But first she has to get over this pit. There’s a platform hovering about 20 feet out. She can’t jump that far even if she hadn’t injured her leg two rooms back. But it’s easy enough. With a quick burst of her gun, she makes two portals and falls rather hard onto the platform. Her leg hurts a bit more now. Fan-fucking-tastic, she thought rubbing her calf. With two more bursts of her gun, including one fired at the bottom of the pit to get the right momentum, she soars over the huge energy shield.

The sentry powered up and announced in its feminine robotic voice;

*I see you. Preparing to dispense product.*

A trick. How could she be so careless. It must be my leg, thought Chell as she dived out of the range of the sentry turret. She couldn’t see it. But she knew it was there. Sentry turrets are snarky bastards. But that’s their downfall. If they didn’t talk, she wouldn’t notice them most of the time.

*Are you still there,* called the turret in its squeaky voice.

Yeah, I’m here, thought Chell, nursing her sore leg.

*Are you still there*

Chell gathered her wits, looked around, and decided to make a go at it. Turrets in the past haven’t caused much of an issue. They’re just an inconvenience.

She darts out into the hallway and fires her gun in the general direction of the turret. Misses. The blast from the portal gun sails into the back wall.

*There you are.*

Chell closes her eyes. Sweet death is upon her. She knows it. It came too early. She should have looked before jumping. Maybe it was her bum leg. Who knows.

*I see you*

*Activated*

*There you are*

Huh, she thought. Maybe I did hit it.

The turret is talking but Chell is standing there, shoulders slumped in defeat but she’s still breathing. She’s not dead. Chell slowly starts to move down the lone hallway. The exit door is getting close. The turret is still talking to her.

*Preparing to dispense product*

She walks a bit closer and sees it.

There, standing in front of the exit door is a small turret. It can’t be more than 7.5-inches tall. It’s harmless besides its annoying voice. It doesn’t shoot anything. Chell notices it’s connected to an old Dell Latitude notebook via USB.

Chell smiles and it feels good. She hasn’t done that for many rooms. She doesn’t unplug the little toy but simply knocks it over with her shoe as she confidently walks the 10 feet to the exit door.

*Hey, hey, hey*

Startled, Chell turns around. Oh, she thought, it’s just mimicking what happens when a real turret falls overs. Cute.

*I don’t hate you*

Chell smiles again as she presses the button on the elevator to take her to the next room. Maybe I’m getting near the end, she thought. Maybe the cake will be in the next room.

—–

In a distant room Blue is watching Chell’s progress on a wall of monitors. He feels satisfied with his little purchase from ThinkGeek– that is, as much as a robot can feel anything. The little prank went well. She smiled. The USB desktop turret only cost him $39.99 but it brought a bit of happiness to Chell’s existence. A good purchase.

Blue turns his attention back to the monitors. Chell is not going to make it out of the next room.

Google hustles Android 4.2.1 onto Nexus devices to give you December back

Android 4.2 bug omits December from the People app

With the rollout of a major OS upgrade like Android 4.2, we can imagine it’s easy to forget something, but Google’s omission of the entire month of December in the People app was certainly a doozy. The beauty of the Nexus program is that Google can rectify little issues like that post-haste, however, and Mountain View has now rolled out Jelly Bean 4.2.1, a small update that adds back that all-too-important month. So far, Nexus 4 and 10 users have reported getting the update, according to XDA Developers, though there’s no evidence yet of any other fixes. Check your Nexus device (or the source) to see if it’s arrived in time for, you know.

Update: Looks as if the Nexus 7 is a go, too!

Cavity Case Holds Your iPhone and Much More

One of my biggest pet peeves is having lots of stuff in my pockets when I am out and about working or playing. I’ve tried a lot of different phone cases over the years that promise to hold the contents of my wallet and my phone, but always gave up on them. The reason I stop using them is that the smartphone cases typically just didn’t hold enough stuff and I still had other items jangling around in my pockets anyhow.

cavity case 1

A case has surfaced on indiegogo that is designed to hold and protect your iPhone 4 or 5 and keep all sorts of other stuff inside as well. The Cavity Case is supposed to hold three keys the size of a typical house key or smaller, an average size car key, a remote control for your keyless entry system, and a telescoping pen.

cavity case 2

That compartment is designed to hold the remote for your keyless entry system also allows you to use that remote without having to remove it from the case. That particular compartment can also be used to store other items such as flash drives, a cigarette lighter or custom round containers which can hold contact lenses or other small items. A pledge of $39(USD) will get you the case and the round containers, while $49 adds on the telescoping pen, and a leather wrist strap.

National Guard finds missing moon rocks in Minnesota

As you may know, it’s illegal to sell moon rocks in the United States. The reason it’s illegal is because all moon rocks were returned to the Earth from the Moon on Apollo missions and are considered national treasures. However, the moon rocks returned to the Earth by Apollo astronauts were typically given out to researchers in various states around the country and around the world.

The problem was that many states simply didn’t keep track of their national treasure rock chunks and many have become lost or stolen over the years. The assumption is many of the lost specimens have been sold on the black market for significant sums of money. However, the Minnesota National Guard announced this week that it has found a few small fragments of moon rocks from the Apollo 11 moon landing.

These particular samples disappeared after they were given to Minnesota during the Nixon administration. After years being lost, the moon rocks were recovered in a storage building in St. Paul. The moon rocks will be turned over to the Historical Society this week.

Now that Minnesota has recovered its lost moon rocks, there are still multiple states they can’t find their own samples. States currently missing moon rock samples include Massachusetts, Texas, and Wisconsin. Perhaps someone should check the storage building behind the governor’s mansion in these states.

Nintendo Makes The Wii Mini Official: $99, Lacks Internet And GameCube Compatibility, Canada-Only

whatbox-wiiconsole

It’s rare that we here in Canada get exclusive access to devices, especially from big manufacturers like Nintendo. But that’s apparently what the Wii Mini is, which first surfaced this morning on Best Buy’s Canadian website. Nintendo has officially detailed the Wii Mini, which will retail for $99 starting December 7, and is described as a gaming-only system that lacks Internet connectivity.

So for users of the current Wii, that means you won’t the same level of access to Netflix and other web-based content, and it likely leaves out downloadable Wii classic console titles, too. Instead, it looks like Nintendo has opted to create a budget machine for gamers interested strictly in playing Wii games, which could turn out to be a very wise move in positioning the budget console as an alternative to the Wii U that doesn’t really have the bells and whistles necessary to compete with the newer generation device for consumer interest. Nintendo seems to be trying to avoid cannibalizing its own product, in other words.

Field testing apps in the Canadian market on mobile software platforms is a pretty standard move these days, and this could be a hardware version of that. Nintendo says that “no information is available about its potential availability in other territories in the future,” and that could be because this is a test to see how consumers react to its concurrent availability with the Wii U, and what effect it ultimately has on sales of both consoles, before potentially introducing it in the U.S. and Europe.
