Portal 2 sentry turret protects your desk

If you’re gamer who’s played the puzzle-platform game Portal 2, you’ll undoubtedly remember the sentry turrets you encounter during the game. If you never played Portal 2, it’s a cool game that debuted in 2007 and five years later fans are still playing. This isn’t a the first Portal 2 sentry turret toy we’ve seen over the years, but this is one of the few we’ve seen that plugs into your computer via a USB port.

This particular turret comes from ThinkGeek and is called the Portal 2 Sentry Turret USB Desk Defender. Once you connect the device to your USB port, it will monitor your desktop environment with motion sensing technology. When the turret senses motion it will offer one of five quips the turrets say in the game.

The turret will say things like “There you are,” “Preparing To dispense product,” “I see you” and a few others. If you knock the turret over or move it, it also says things you’ll recognize from the games such as “I don’t hate you,” “hey, hey, hey”, “Nonfunctioning” and others. Once activated if the turret senses no motion for 30 seconds it will say, “Are you still there.”

When the turret does since motion, it opens up its little side wings where its guns hid in the video game. This little USB-powered turret doesn’t shoot anything, it only makes sounds. The turret is 7.5-inches tall and is an officially licensed Portal 2 collectible. You can order one right now for $39.99.

Latest “Meet Your Match” video from Microsoft goes up against the iPhone

With the release of Windows Phone 8 and its accompanying devices, like the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC Windows Phone 8X, Microsoft and their OEM partners certainly are up against some stiff competition against Apple’s latest iPhone 5 and the various high-end Android handsets out there like the Samsung Galaxy S3, LG Optimus G and the likes. Perhaps looking at attempting to move the iPhone competition out of the way, Microsoft has released a new “Meet Your Match” video in which they appear to have successfully persuaded iPhone (and would-be) users to ditch their iPhones in favor of a (free) Windows Phone device.

As some of you guys might recall, Microsoft revealed their “Meet Your Match” campaign in which they attempt to pitch how great a Windows Phone is compared to other platforms. It is basically the successor to the “Smoked by Windows Phone” campaign launched awhile back whereby Microsoft attempted to show how much more efficient a Windows Phone is compared to its competition.

Plethora of Blackberry 10 L-series photos get leaked

Yesterday we saw new photos of the Blackberry 10 L-series and it was pictured alongside the Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 device, and while the L-series has been leaked seemingly at least once a week, we guess it never hurts to get more views of the device in various angles, and that’s pretty much what the folks at TechSuplex did when they got their hands on various photos of the Blackberry 10 L-series. As far as the hardware is concerned, there certainly are no surprises but thankfully in these series of photos, we get to see various apps running on the L-series and we also manage to catch a glimpse of its home screen, so if you’d like to see more photos of what you might be able to expect come 2013, check out the rest of the photos in the gallery below.

Xbox 360 system update rolling out now

If you’re an Xbox 360 gamer, you’re familiar with updates that add new features and make changes to your game console. Microsoft has announced that a new Xbox system update is rolling out to gamers around the world starting today. The new update is mandatory and it’s unclear exactly how large the update is at this time.

Major Nelson reports that any Xbox 360 owner who is already signed into LIVE will be forced to sign out to apply the update. The update reportedly corrects some issues with the Xbox 360 that some gamers have been suffering from. One of the issues addressed with the update is a problem some have seen with the display an incorrect playlist from Xbox SmartGlass.

The update will also address an error with Xbox Video closed-captioning. The final major issue that this mandatory update will address is a problem some users have had with Xbox Music. Users will have to accept the update and apply it to be able to get back online.

We’ve also had some other interesting Xbox 360 news this week. Yesterday we mentioned that the ship dates for Halo 4 map packs were leaked. The three map packs are called Crimson, Majestic, and Castle and will release on December 10, February 25, and April 1 respectively.

Google’s Play Store website now links reviews to your Google+ account

Google's Play Store website now links reviews with your Google+ account

YouTube asks nicely if you would like to post comments using your Google+ name, and now a similar change has quietly made it to the Play Store. When we say similar, we mean in this case, you’re forced into revealing your true identity from now on — at least when you’re accessing Google’s virtual marketplace from a browser. We’d guess that linking ratings and reviews to your account ties in with the enhanced Google+ integration recently added to the app, and will serve to provide better download recommendations based on your profile and friends. The requirement, however, has not yet been implemented in the app, so if you’ve been meaning to leave a few damning reviews, this loophole is your last chance to do so anonymously.

Chevrolet Spark EV slips in under $25k

Chevrolet has officially revealed its 2014 Spark EV, a new plug-in electric city car with a sub-$25,000 price tag after tax incentives, though the company isn’t talking specific range yet. The new compact, unveiled at the LA Auto Show 2012 and following in the tire-prints of the Chevy Volt, and has a GM-designed 130 HP electric motor for 400 lb.ft of torque, and a 20+ kWh li-ion battery which together the car company claims are good for best-in-class acceleration and range. The Spark EV will do the 0-60mph dash in under 8s.

That li-ion battery – which has apparently been through more than 200,000 hours of testing for safety and performance – recharges to 80-percent in 20 minutes time, using an SAE Combo DC Fast Charge system, though that doesn’t come as standard. Alternatively, a 240V outlet can fully charge the Spark EV in “less than seven hours”; expect longer again if you’re using a regular 120V connection.

Chevy’s Mobile App will allow for charging periods to be set around on- and off-peak electricity rates, and the batteries are covered by an 8yr/100,000 mile warranty. There’ll also be three years of standard OnStar service, which forms the backbone of the Spark EV’s remote management.

Inside, there are two 7-inch color LCD screens for infotainment and power management, with Chevrolet throwing in a “confidence gauge” that predicts real-world range based on typical driving style and other conditions. There’ll be plenty of blue LED lighting – to match or contrast with the Electric Blue, Black Granite, Summit White, Silver Ice, and Titanium external color schemes – and Chevrolet’s new Siri-enabled MyLink infotainment kit.

The Spark EV will go on sale in California, Oregon, at “participating dealerships” in Canada, in South Korea, and “other global markets” from summer 2013. International pricing is yet to be confirmed.

Ford Fiesta ST Confirmed for North America

Ford has officially announced that the Fiesta ST will be coming to North America. Ford currently offers the larger Focus ST in the US, and its smaller brother the Fiesta ST should be just as fun to drive. Previously the Fiesta ST was only available in Europe, and fans of small, turbocharged hatchbacks should be thrilled to hear it’s coming to the US.

The Fiesta ST will be exclusively equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Ford expects the little car to be a segment leader in performance and fuel efficiency. Ford launched the Fiesta ST in Europe in 2005 where is available as a five door and a three-door. For now it seems US will only get the five-door version.

The heart of the little Fiesta ST is a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine producing an estimated 197 hp and 214 pound-foot of torque. By comparison, the 2013 Ford Focus ST produces 252 hp and 270 pound-foot of torque. Ford also notes that 177 pound-foot of torque in the Fiesta ST is available from only 1600 RPM.

The Fiesta ST is projected to offer 34 mpg and the ST version of the Fiesta will have a unique grill and chin spoiler. The Fiesta ST will also be fitted with bright tipped dual exhaust pipes, a high mount spoiler, and 17-inch wheels. The vehicle also gets a unique suspension and a quicker steering ratio. Pricing for the Fiesta ST is unknown at this time. Hopefully, we will learn all the details at the 2012 Los Angeles auto show.
