Google-ICOA Deal That Never Happened: Press Release Falsely Claimed A $400 Million Purchase

On Monday, news broke of a run-of-the-mill acquisition for Google: It was purchasing Rhode Island-based WiFi hotspot provider ICOA Inc. for $400 million.

The problem? Just the unfortunate fact that the news was completely, utterly false.

Here’s what happened: On Monday morning, PRWeb, a popular website on which companies distribute press releases, posted a notice (since taken down) announcing the “deal.” “ICOA Inc. Acquired by Google for $400 Million,” the release was titled, written in the dry prose that celebrates a supersized company gobbling a smaller firm for a stack of cash larger than many of us will ever see.

Jon Shenk: Barack Obama Should Rise to the Challenge on Climate Change

What if, back in 2009, Obama had followed in President Kennedy’s footsteps and made a moonshot speech about the climate, pledging to make the US the world’s first carbon-neutral country within ten years? What if he did that right now?

Ben Heck Analog WASD Keyboard Mod: Because You Can’t Type With a Joystick

Modder Ben Heck has removed one of the few remaining advantages of videogame consoles over the PC master race: the analog stick. Heck sacrificed an Xbox 360 controller to make the W, A, S and D keys on his keyboard behave like the left stick on the controller, i.e. the harder he presses the keys, the faster his character moves in game. Or whatever “-er” is supposed to happen.

Aside from an Xbox 360 controller, Ben Heck also used magnets, Hall effect sensors and a microcontroller to complete the mod. He ends up with WASD keys that are much more useful in PC games that support gamepads. You can skip to about 10:00 in the video to see Heck test his modded keyboard:

If you already had your soldering spellbook and modding whatzits close at hand, head to Ben Heck’s website to grab the files and code you’ll need for the mod.

Bell, Virgin Mobile Canada reportedly start unlocking iPhones, at a steep cost (update: Telus does too)

Bell, Virgin Mobile Canada to start unlocking iPhones, at a steep cost

Canadians have had the option to buy a factory-unlocked iPhone for awhile, but liberating Apple’s handset after the sale has been officially limited to Rogers and Fido customers. As long as MobileSyrup‘s leak is the real deal, though, subscribers to Bell and its Virgin Mobile branch can spring for an unlock as of today. That’s good news for many, although the hurdle is once again the carrier’s desire to keep customers from jumping ship. Those pursuing an unlock will supposedly need to be out of contract, skip any prepaid plans and pay a $75 fee — in short, they’re more likely to derestrict an old, well-worn iPhone than the iPhone 5 they bought last week. We’ll just be happy to have another route to hardware independence, and hope that the mention of widened unlock eligibility in 2013 is more than just a rumor.

Update: Telus lets you unlock as well, so this mostly completes the big three carriers. Thanks, Tim!

Cyber Monday Counterfeit Crackdown: Feds Seize Down 132 Domain Names To Stop Knockoff Sales

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — More than 100 domain names were seized in an international crackdown on websites that sell counterfeit merchandise, federal authorities said Monday, just in time for the biggest online shopping day of the year.

It was the third consecutive Cyber Monday that websites selling knockoff sports jerseys, DVDs, cologne and other goods were blocked from doing business. This year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations coordinated the 132-site effort with Europol and police in Belgium, Denmark, France, Romania and the United Kingdom.

“This is not an American problem, it is a global one, and it is a fight we must win,” ICE Director John Morton said in a statement.

2014 Ford Fiesta to come equipped with MyFord Touch

If you’ve been shopping around for a new car, it’s understandable that the Ford Fiesta might not be at the top of the list. However, today Microsoft and Ford are giving us a reason to take a second look at the 2014 Fiesta, announcing that it will come equipped with MyFord Touch. This isn’t exactly the same MyFord Touch we’ve seen in other vehicles, as it will make use of a new 6.5-inch touchscreen.

That’s exciting enough, but Microsoft and Ford have also made a few improvements to SYNC. This includes “more natural” voice recognition, which means that you’ll no longer have to say things like “Radio” or specify the genre when you tell the system to play music. Instead, you’ll be able to simply say the frequency or Sirius name of the station your after, which is a pretty handy tool to have on board.

Add streamlined Bluetooth connectivity and improved navigation controls that make it easier to enter the address of your destination, and you’ve got a new version of MyFord Touch that’s worth getting excited about. Of course, we’re sure that new 6.5-inch screen will make on-screen navigation easier in general, so that’s something to consider too if you’ve been thinking about getting a connected car.

Sadly, this new technology is a little while off, as it will be making its debut in the 2014 Ford Fiesta, which won’t be arriving until next year. The good news is that the Ford Fiesta is a pretty affordable car all things considered, so you shouldn’t have to break the bank just to get a car that has a pretty cool feature in MyFord Touch. We’ll undoubtedly be hearing more about this as the 2014 Ford Fiesta gets closer to release, so keep it here at SlashGear for additional details.
