The Onion Eviscerates Social Media ‘Experts’ In TED Talk Parody (VIDEO)

The Onion released another “Onion Talk,” the satirical news outlet’s parody of TED Talks, and this time took down so-called “social media experts” and their glamorization of new communication tools rather than visionary concepts.

“I’m a successful social media consultant, even though I’ve never had a thought or original idea in my life,” says the speaker from the outset.

He explains how several of his clients look to “social media experts” to brand their product on the Internet, and instead of doing anything revolutionary, just set up an uninspired Facebook page. The examples are fictional, but their example of raking in the big bucks by trying to give Cheetos a dynamic social media presence might as well be replaced by, say, developing indie cred for Campbell’s Soup.

John McCain Softens Opposition To Susan Rice Nomination

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said he could be convinced not to prevent United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice from taking the top job at the U.S. State Department if President Barack Obama were to nominate her for the position.

McCain previously said he would block a Rice nomination for secretary of state because of her faulty explanation for the murder of Libya Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi in September.

“Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace asked McCain if there was anything Rice could do to change his mind.

Guy Makes His Own Scroll Saw – Out of Wood

Now you know you can run down to the local Home Depot and pick up a scroll saw for under 100 bucks, right? Well that didn’t stop one enterprising DIYer from building his own. Instead of using metal, this guy built his out of wood.

handmade wooden scroll saw

Japanese builder Mikiono created this scroll saw almost entirely out of wood. Pretty much everything except for the saw blade, belt, wires and motor are handmade from plywood. Even the gears are wooden. But does it work? Absolutely. You can see the saw (see what I did there?) in action in the video clip below:

While many hand tools have wooden handles on them, it seems really unusual to me that you’d build a power tool from wood. I’d be afraid that it would saw itself in half. I guess Mikiono just wanted to prove it could be done. And a fine job you have done, sir.

2012 UN Climate Talks In Doha, Qatar Face Multiple Challenges

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — As nearly 200 countries meet in oil-and-gas-rich Qatar for annual talks starting Monday on slowing global warming, one of the main challenges will be raising climate aid for poor countries at a time when budgets are strained by financial turmoil.

Rich countries have delivered nearly $30 billion in grants and loans promised in 2009, but those commitments expire this year. And a Green Climate Fund designed to channel up to $100 billion annually to poor countries has yet to begin operating.

Borrowing a buzzword from the U.S. budget debate, Tim Gore of the British charity Oxfam said developing countries, including island nations for whom rising sea levels pose a threat to their existence, stand before a “climate fiscal cliff.”
