SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 23, 2012

Some of us are still recovering from our food comas, but luckily the weekend is here so most of us can use that time for recouping (or chowing down on leftovers). Let’s recap the news from the day, shall we? Of course, today is Black Friday, with Apple kicking off a Black Friday sale of its own and the NPD saying that sales today could be what pushes tablet shipments above notebook shipments. We also heard from various companies that people were reaching for their phones and tablets on Thanksgiving to net some great deals, apparently not willing to wait until the Black Friday “festivities” kicked off.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, it turns out the holiday was Instagram’s biggest day ever, with tons of users taking pictures of Thanksgiving dinner and uploading them to the service. AT&T is offering refurbished iPhone 5s on its website for $99 a pop, while we caught a glimpse of the HTC Deluxe in a leaked press shot today. Nokia suffered a pretty big setback today when the head of its camera and imaging department, Damian Dinning, announced he would be leaving the company, and T-Mobile’s online stock of the Nexus 4 was brought down to nothing in mere hours after the Google Play Store linked to the listing.

The long-awaited Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition was given a gameplay trailer today while we learned that mobile data usage has doubled in the past year. The Samsung Galaxy Camera will be launching in Canada on December 7, and Nintendo has partnered with HMV to give some early Wii U adopters free games when the console launches in Europe. Nexus 4 LTE functionality has been unlocked through the use of a simple hack, and the Toyota Prius has been named the car least likely to be stolen, despite its relative popularity. Finnish police have taken a nine-year-old’s Winnie the Pooh laptop for suspected file sharing, and scientists have studied the dwarf planet Makemake for the first time.

Finally tonight, we have a number of reviews for you to read through. Cory Gunther gives us his review of the Barnes & Noble Nook HD, while Chris Burns reviews the Acer Aspire S7 and the AERIAL7 TANK DIY over the ear headphones. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy your weekend!

GM announces pricing for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala

Back in April, Chevrolet announced the upcoming 2014 Impala, a four-door sedan from General Motors that builds on the healthily popular line of vehicles. Now the company has announced its price tag: $27,535, which includes delivery charges. This is an $850 rise in prices over the current model. The Impala was one of the best-selling cars in 2011.

The 2014 model will be available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine at first, but those who wait a bit will also have a 2.4-liter option. The 2.4-liter version includes an eAssist hybrid system, which improves gas mileage, giving the Impala a cool 35 miles per gallon. If hybrids aren’t your thing, there will also be a non-eAssist version.

The upcoming model will include Chevrolet’s MyLink, an entertainment system that is controlled with an 8-inch display panel. As far as safety goes, the Impala will offer a side blind spot alert feature, rear cross traffic alert function, and 10 air bags scattered throughout the car. There’s also adaptive cruise control.

Chevrolet’s Vice President Chris Perry offered a statement. “We’ll build on the success the Impala nameplate has generated over its history. We’ve added sophisticated design features, more technology and safety equipment.” The 2014 Impala is slated for availability in early 2013, and is the tenth generation of the model.

Springfield, Massachusetts Gas Explosion Levels Building Housing Strip Club, Injures At Least 18

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A natural gas explosion in one of New England’s biggest cities on Friday leveled a strip club with a boom heard for miles and heavily damaged a dozen other buildings but didn’t kill anyone, authorities said.

Firefighters, police officers and gas company workers in the area because of an earlier gas leak and odor report were among the 18 people injured in the blast, authorities said.

The Government’s Magnet Ban Might Actually Be Easy To Circumvent

As you might have heard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is working hard to ban those sets of tiny magnets after a handful of reports of them being swallowed by children who then require surgery to have them removed. But it turns out that companies like Zen Magnets and Buckyballs might still be able to sell their products if the magnets are sold individually. More »

Former Nokia exec Damian Dinning announces he's headed to Jaguar

The sudden departure of Nokia imaging head Damian Dinning caught many by surprise earlier today, but now he’s announced where his next post will be: Jaguar Land Rover. In a statement posted at PureView Club, he explained that other than photography, cars are another lifelong passion and at Jaguar he’ll be “driving future innovations in the exciting new field of Connected Car.” His family also seems to have played a significant role, since while Nokia is concentrating many of its “strategic roles” in Finland, he desired to remain in the UK. He also sought to calm the nerves of fans of Nokia’s camera tech, noting there was a team behind the division’s success, not just one person.

Tesla Model S price hike incoming, current reservations can dodge the increase

Tesla Model S price hike incoming, current reservations can dodge the increase

Just two weeks after announcing its expectations to become cash flow positive, Tesla’s clued us into an upcoming price hike for the Model S. The word is mum regarding a reason for the change and how much more customers will have to pony up for the award-winning EV, but Musk and Co. are planning to reveal more details within the next two to three weeks. As part of the price increase, the automaker will be tweaking Model S package options, making some standard features optional going forward. Model S enthusiasts with reservations will remain unaffected by the price and package changes so long as they configure and finalize their cars “within a fair, predefined timeframe” before the heftier price tag goes into effect. Likewise, those who’ve deferred their reservations will have a similar period of time to finalize their order and escape the higher asking price.

Black Friday Deals Lure Shoppers Earlier Than Ever

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — Gravy was still warm. Dallas Cowboys were still in uniform. Thanks were still being given across the country as the pilgrimages to the stores began, heralding a new era of American consumerism.

Lured by earlier-than-ever Black Friday sales, people left Grandma and Grandpa in search of Samsung and Toshiba. They did not go blindly: In dozens of interviews, people acknowledged how spending has become inseparable from the holidays. Older folks pined for the days of Erector Sets and Thumbelinas while in line to pay iPad prices. Even some younger shoppers said it felt wrong to be spending money instead of quality time on Thanksgiving.
