Instaturkey: Instagram hits all-time high, over 10 million pictures shared on #Thanksgiving Day

Instaturkey Instagram hits alltime high, over 10 million pictures shared on #Thanksgiving Day

They say a picture is worth a thousand words — and boy did Instragram’s servers have a colossal amount of words to deal with yesterday. Via its blog, the Facebook-owned picture sharing service announced that, on Thanksgiving Day, more than 10 million holiday-related images were shared on the social network, which saw peak hour come in at around 12:00pm Pacific time with over 200 filter-packed (no filter, in some cases) images per second being Instagrammed. Moreover, Thanksgiving marked one of the app’s most active days in its short history, with Instagram saying that yesterday “broke all records as we saw the number of shared photos more than double from the day before, making it our busiest day so far.” Now bring on the #leftovers.

Small Business Saturday Gives Black-Owned Stores A Boost, But Retail Still A Hard Sell

Every Saturday is Small Business Saturday for Oyin Handmade owner Jamyla Bennu. Her 3-year-old shop in the budding Charles Village neighborhood of Baltimore has welcomed customers only one day a week since she opened its doors in February 2009. But there is one particular date, she said, that really bolsters sales — the Saturday right after Thanksgiving.

“It drives traffic both to our Internet business and to our brick-and-mortar business,” Bennu told The Huffington Post, referring to American Express’ annual Small Business Saturday initiative, now in its third year. “We get lots of people through social media … [who] may have waited for the sale to try [our products] for the first time even if they had heard about it before and had been interested,” Bennu said. “That discount or sale may be the thing that’s pushed them over the edge.”

Melinda Emerson also plans to use Small Business Saturday to build her client list.

‘Sandy Friday’ Urges Businesses To Pledge 10% Of Black Friday Profits

The biggest U.S. shopping day may also be the perfect opportunity to raise relief money for victims of Superstorm Sandy — the second costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, according to the AP.

“Sandy Friday,” a national pledge drive, is asking businesses to donate at least 10 percent of their Black Friday and Cyber Monday profits to community-based Sandy relief efforts, according to the group’s official website.

“It is our goal to be a source of funding for the organizations that are committed to a long-term vision of rebuilding in these communities in the days and months ahead,” one of the initiative’s founders wrote in a blog post for good.is.

T-Mobile Nexus 4 sold out in just a couple hours

After Google ran out of stock with Nexus 4 units after just minutes of becoming available, customers’ only hope was to wait until T-Mobile started offering it online and in their stores. However, after just hours of Google quietly posting up the link to T-Mobile’s website in the Google Play store, online stock of T-Mobile Nexus 4s are now gone.

While most users probably wanted a Nexus 4 off-contract, it seems the daunting thought of a two-year contract wasn’t holding people back from buying a subsidized Nexus 4. We’re not sure how many units T-Mobile received exactly for online orders, but you may have better luck at your local carrier store, where they still might have a few left in stock if you’re really desperate.

Buying a Nexus 4 at T-Mobile will cost $199 for the 16GB version after you sign a two-year contract. Of course, coughing up only $100 more could have gotten you an 8GB unlocked and off-contract Nexus 4, while $150 more would have you sealing the deal on an off-contract 16GB model. However, it seems a lot of Nexus fans are willing to sacrifice two years of their life in order to get the latest and greatest Google phone.

The Nexus 4 has a 4.7-inch 1280×768 IPS display with a pixel density of 320ppi. On the inside, there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU with 2GB of RAM. It comes with an 8MP rear camera and a 1.3MP VGA cam on the front. It comes running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, as well as NFC and wireless charging capabilities, but no LTE.

Small Business Saturday In San Francisco: Our Favorite Local Spots (PHOTOS)

Didn’t wake up at 4 a.m. today to stand in line at the new Target? Wouldn’t be caught dead fighting over a flat screen at Best Buy?

Small Business Saturday is for you, my friend.

Skip the madness that is Black Friday and hit the streets San Francisco-style the day after. Some local stores offer coffee, wine and treats, but all of them are home to unique, one-of-a-kind, only-in-San Francisco goodies that are ten times cooler than the new Halo.

Copyright Alert System: How ISPs Will ‘Break Your Internet’ If They Catch You Pirating

You might want to think twice before downloading anything illegally in the near future.

Following the untimely demise of proposed anti-piracy laws SOPA and PIPA, five Internet service providers (specifically AT&T, Cablevision Systems, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Verizon) worked with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Obama administration to create another set of protocols to stop digital pirates in their tracks.

The result was the “Six Strikes” initiative, a program that allows Internet service providers (ISPs) to directly penalize users who downloaded pirated content. How ISPs planned to punish the users, though, was left largely unsaid in the initiative’s actual text, leading to months of information vacuum filled only by the Center for Copyright Information’s vague promises that penalties could include anything from the following, according to the CCI’s official description of the Copyright Alert System:

Sifteo Cubes Are…

… totally unique mobile gaming gadgets, made up of individual squares each with their own LED display, that communicate with each other and a controller base to build changing game boards, world maps and more. This generation of Sifteo Cubes is an upgrade from last year’s model, bringing improved graphics and computer independent play. The cubes now work with a very portable base, meaning you can take these on car trips to keep the kids occupied, or wherever you want to go.

Buy Sifteo Cubes For…

… the playfully experimental people in your lives. Because they offer a wide range of content, Sifteo Cubes are actually suitable for a broad audience. If you want to get your kids playing with something a little more exploratory, challenging and engaging than your average iPad app, Sifteo Cubes fit the bill. And if you’re an adult who grew up loving tabletop gaming and want something that builds on that experience with unique digital elements, these are a good option, too.

Because…

… while mobile gaming continues to be an innovative space on platforms like smartphones and tablets, Sifteo is trying something completely different. The titles that are currently available all offer a slightly different take on the modular mechanics, and there’s bound to be many more on the way from talented developers. Plus, adding relatively inexpensive additional cubes to the three that ship in the starter set also adds more depth to game play. Basically  Sifteo Cubes are never boring, and in a world of uninspired Call of Duty sequels, that’s reason enough to gift these things.

App Buys Random Items from Amazon: or Just Get Wasted, then Place an Order

A programmer named Darius Kazemi made Random Shopper, a software ‘bot that buys random items from Amazon. Why? Kazemi wanted to replicate the feeling of receiving an item that you already forgot you bought. It’s like a surprise gift from yourself to you! Welcome to Forever Alone: Holiday Edition.

random shopper by Darius Kazemi 2

Random Shopper starts by getting a random word from the Wordnik API then searching for that word on Amazon. It will then buy the first item it finds under its budget, which for now is $50 (USD). Then it will look for another item that’s within what’s left of its money and so on. But Kazemi cheated a bit because the Random Shopper isn’t that random: it will only buy the item if it’s a CD, DVD or a paperback book. I guess that’s a reasonable rule. That way the money isn’t completely wasted on some random crap that Kazemi won’t use.

The packages shown in the top picture are the first batch of Random Shopper’s “gifts” to Kazemi. You can check out what’s inside them on his Random Shopper blog. What I want now is a robot that secretly takes money from my wallet then randomly places it into my other stuff, so I can replicate the feeling of finding money I didn’t know I had.
