Sharp Cocorobo vacuum gets new Android app, lets you control it from afar

DNP Sharp introduces smaller Cocorobo vacuum, remote Android app and Navi controller

Perhaps in response to iRobot’s recent Wireless Command Center, Sharp has introduced a new Android app that lets you remotely control the company’s little Cocorobo while you’re out of the house. You can map out your floor plan so that it’ll know what objects to avoid, specify cleaning patterns and even receive carpet-view photos so you can admire the robot vacuum’s handiwork. If you attach an optional Navi controller to its USB port, you can even use the app to control other Sharp devices like televisions, air conditioning systems and LED lights. Sharp also introduced a smaller version of the Cocorobo, the RX-V60, which measures about 4.7cm less than the original. Designed to fit in tighter spaces, the RX-V60 will be available in Japan for 75,000 yen ($900) starting December 13th. Check out the video after the break to peek at the new smartphone app and miniaturized vacuum ‘bot.

Facebook To Ditch Member Voting Process?

It looks like Facebook is on a path that might not go down well with many people, as the social network giant proposes to ditch its policy which enables members to vote on changes that it makes in terms of data use policy. Facebook Vice President for Communications, Public Policy and Marketing Elliot Schrage promised that the company still values user input on company policy, but declared that the “voting mechanism, which is triggered by a specific number of comments, actually resulted in a system that incentivized the quantity of comments over their quality.”

Current rules work this way – proposed changes on the receiving end of over 7,000 comments will automatically trigger a vote on those changes, and assuming 30% of Facebook’s members (which number around one billion) take part in that vote, then Facebook ought to abide by the results of that vote. Proposed rules will work otherwise, where members are given a week by Facebook to comment on a policy change. Once the comment period is over, any changes adopted will be reflected by a user notification. Basically, that means a dictatorship in certain aspects of Facebook. Bummer!

Apple Reportedly Changes Battery Suppliers As Samsung Walks

ipad-3-battery

Apple has reportedly changed its battery suppliers for the iPad and MacBook lines to Amperex Technology Limited and Tianjin Lishen Battery, both Chinese firms, after Samsung SDI (Samsung’s battery-producing subsidiary) stopped supplying Apple, the China Business News reports. If accurate, this would be just the latest in a series of rifts between the two companies.

Samsung is a crucial component partner for Apple and will remain so at least in the near future, according to CEO Tim Cook on Apple’s most recent quarterly conference call. But recently, rumors have been swirling that the supplier relationship between Samsung and Apple is in the process of eroding. In the past couple of months, we’ve seen reports that Samsung had increased processor prices for Apple (which the company denied) and also claims that Apple was terminating the display supply relationship with the Korean company (also later denied).

The two companies are locked in a global patent battle and are each other’s primary competition in the global smartphone race. In light of the strained relationship, it’s natural that people should expect their supply chain arrangements to suffer, too. And there has been tangible proof; Apple did indeed remove crucial design components for its A-series processors out of Samsung’s hands and in-house, which reduces Samsung to just a manufactory partner. Apple has also reportedly been grooming TSMC and others to take over chip production in the future.

But for all the reports, there seems to be little hard evidence that the relationship is indeed collapsing. Put simply, Samsung has capacity that Apple can’t find elsewhere, and Apple has a very lucrative contract with Samsung, meaning changing their relationship quickly isn’t easy or beneficial to either.

This battery supplier report is just the latest in a series of indicators that the relationship between the two could be undergoing a slow but inevitable shift, but don’t expect to see Apple and Samsung walk away from each other entirely for quite a while yet.

Resident Evil Revelations Headed For Xbox 360 And PS3?

Hmmm, if you are a huge fan of survival horror games such as the Resident Evil series, then surely you would be interested to know that Resident Evil Revelations has already been listed for home consoles by the Korean ratings board (South Korea, that is, maybe the North has just received their shipment of SNES consoles by now). Assuming this listing is correct and is not in error in any way, then we are looking at the probability of a Nintendo 3DS game being ported over to the home based consoles – something which does not happen all too often.

NeoGAF users did leave their fair share of comments, touting that the certification process itself could probably have been a mistake, and that the game had already been rated for the 3DS. Apart from that, one should make a special mental note that the South Korean ratings board does have a history of leaking video game information earlier than normal. For the general masses, Resident Evil Revelations rolled out on the Nintendo 3DS in January this year.

Will.i.am Looks At Genius Phones Instead Of Smartphones

So you think that the phone which you hold in your hand is smart? Well, entrepreneurial entertainer Will.i.am thinks so, but he also figured out that life could be a whole lot better by transforming smartphones into, in his own words, ‘genius phones’. This is his new plan for a range of consumer electronics as well as app venture which is simply known as i.am+. In fact, it is just next week when we will be privy to the global launch of his iPhone hardware that he touts will be able to transform the humble smartphone into a genius phone.

The maiden device from this consumer electronics and app range known as i.am+ is actually accessory which can be clipped onto an iPhone, where it will transform the 8-megapixel camera on the iPhone into a 14-megapixel shooter, and Will.i.am claims it will dramatically enhance not only the clarity but definition of your photographs. Will.i.am mentioned to The Daily Telegraph, “We have our own sensor and a better flash. You dock you phone into our device and it turns you smartphone into a genius-phone. We take over the camera.”

Porsche 917 Le Mans Raceway

While many of us might dream about owning a Porsche in our garage (and not the scaled down replica, but the real deal), not all of us will eventually be able to afford one of these puppies. Still, it is rather crazy to hear of a toy that could purchase you a real life Porsche with some cash left over to boot. I am referring to this $125,000 Porsche 917 Le Mans Raceway, which is a full-sized Porsche 917 replica. You will not find any horsepower underneath the hood, but it actually conceals a 1:32-scale working wooden slot car track that is faithful to the iconic Le Mans raceway. Not only that, it has been lovingly painted in the same color scheme and #20 race number, paying homage to the classic 1971 movie that starred Steve McQueen.

This Porsche 917 replica even comes with genuine race-worn GT prototype tires on aluminum three-piece rims, coupled with working headlights and taillights. Its precisely molded replica cowling will open up in a clamshell manner at the touch of a button, revealing the track within. No quarter was spared to introduce it to the world in handcrafted detail, and the raceway has even been built with realistic landscaping, sporting period signage that has been illuminated by working streetlights.

Nissan adds driving range and drops the price of the Leaf EV

So far, Nissan has failed to generate the kind sales hoped for with its electric Leaf automobile. Part of the reason the car has failed to sell is that it’s driving range is too short for many shoppers and the price is too high. Nissan showed off a new version of the Leaf this week at a hotel in Tokyo.

The new version of the Leaf has modifications that were made by Nissan based on feedback from owners of current Leaf EVs. One of the biggest worries Nissan noted from Leaf owners was the fear of running out of electricity and being stranded. The upgraded version has a system that will tell drivers exactly how much battery life is left to help alleviate fears of being stranded.

The new version of the Leaf also has an extended electric driving range. Nissan claims that the new version of the Leaf can travel 142 miles on a fully charged battery. That is an increase from 124 miles on the previous version. However, the caveat for 142 miles on a single charge is that you can’t use the air conditioning.

The longer driving range was made possible thanks to improvements in the vehicle battery system and reductions in vehicle weight. The new version of the Leaf sells for under $31,000 for a base model with no options in Japan once government subsidies are applied. Nissan has sold 43,000 Leaf vehicles globally since it launched in 2010, with half that number sold in Japan. Nissan says it has sold 17,000 Leaf EVs in the US and sells about 1500 monthly.

Gaza Cease Fire: Israeli Gunfire Kills 1 Palestinian, Wounds 19 Near Border

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian man and wounded 19 people as crowds surged toward Gaza’s border fence with Israel on Friday, a health official said, the first violence since a truce between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers took hold a day before.

The shooting did not appear to pose an immediate threat to the Egypt-brokered cease-fire, which called for an end to Gaza rocket fire on Israel and Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. The truce came after eight days of cross-border fighting, the bloodiest between Israel and Hamas in four years.

Walmart India Corruption Probe Leads To Suspension Of Several Workers

MUMBAI, India — Wal-Mart’s Indian joint venture said Friday it has suspended several employees as part of an internal corruption investigation, another blow to the U.S. company’s plans for aggressive expansion in a giant market that is largely untapped by foreign retailers.

Bharti Walmart, Wal-Mart’s joint venture with India’s Bharti Enterprises, said it had suspended “a few associates” and was “committed to conducting a complete and thorough investigation.” India’s Economic Times newspaper reported that the company’s chief financial officer was among the five employees suspended, a claim the company declined to verify.

How Did Brady Beat The Jets’ Blitz?

I want to go back to Tom Brady’s 56-yard TD pass to Julian Edelman from the Patriots’ 49-19 win over the Jets to talk scheme in the secondary. With Rex Ryan’s defense sending a five-man zone pressure, the Patriots’ WR got behind safety LaRon Landry on the 9 (fade) route. What happened? Where was the breakdown that allowed Brady to target the deep ball?
