LA100 Automatic UAV Shoots Photos From Above

If you are a photographer who is looking to up your game, then you might have been toying around with the idea of capturing images from different angles – and with the help of the LA100 automatic micro UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), that is not too hard to do. Lehmann Aviation of France is the one behind the LA100 fully automatic UAV which was specially designed to tote around a GoPro HERO3 camera.

The LA100 is obedient enough to follow a pre-programmed flight path, but it will be different from others such as the Swinglet as the LA100′s flight path cannot be customized or overridden by remote control. The whole idea is this – this particular aircraft will target users who have absolutely zero piloting background, which can be a boon or a curse, depending on which side of the fence you are sitting on. Basically, the LA100 will be able to capture footage from a height of 80 to 100 meters without the need for any input from the user who has his or her feet planted firmly on the ground, where the hand-launched LA100 will return to the launch site for a horizontal landing afterwards. It is capable of flying at speeds of up to 80 kmh, in a space of 5 minutes.

Not exactly priced to move, the LA100 will retail for €990 a pop, and will arrive this December – although whether it will make the Christmas deadline or not remains to be seen.

Razer DeathAdder Mouse Updated

The Razer DeathAdder mouse is one of the more popular gaming mice to date, and considering how it was launched all the way back in 2006 (yes sir, it is half a dozen years that we are talking about here!), it is all too timely for Razer to come up with an update to this venerable gaming mouse. Touted to be the world’s best-selling gaming mouse, the updated and upgraded Razer DeathAdder will come with an upgraded optical sensor which will move from its 3.5G roots to a cutting-edge 4G infrared sensor that delivers improved performance and precision. Not only that, it is also touted to be the world’s most powerful optical sensor, where it is capable of achieving up to 6400 dpi resolution without having to sacrifice the natural tracking feel of an optical sensor, and neither will it yield the robotic sensation which is more often than not associated to that of a comparable laser option.

Sporting the iconic right-handed ergonomic shape (southpaws lose out on this again) that have grown on gamers over the years, it will even carry integrated textured rubber side grips to deliver superior mouse control and grip. Similar to its predecessor, the new Razer DeathAdder will come with Synapse 2.0 support, letting you synchronize your range of settings and profiles automatically over to the cloud without missing a beat. Depending on which side of the pond you live on, the updated Razer DeathAdder gaming mouse will retail for $69.99 or €69.99. Enjoy the photo gallery after the jump. [Press Release]

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Android 4.1 With Premium Suite

So, we do know that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, at least in select areas around the globe, has already started to receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system update, which will certainly keep owners of the tablet more than happy. Well, there is more than meets the eye as the Transformers would have it, as Samsung has added to the overall feeling of anticipation by revealing how Premium Suite will be part of the operating system update.

I guess apart from all that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is able to deliver, users too, will be able to enjoy extended Multi Window functionality, where it will allow your device to open up to 16 apps simultaneously, and each of these “windows” can be moved, resized and pinned according to your whim and fancy. Not only that, Samsung’s Air View has also been thrown into the Premium Suite mix, which enables users to preview appointments, emails, and video among others simply be hovering the S Pen right above the display.

Other new additions will include Easy Clip, Quick Command, Photo Note, Paper Artist and an enhanced S Note app. No idea on when exactly will Premium Suite and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean roll out, but we sure as heck hope that an early Christmas present would be more than welcome.

Lorraine Devon Wilke: Can’t We Talk About ‘Both Sides’ Without Accusations of Anti-Semitism?

I’ve discovered that when I express anything that includes the phrase “both sides,” I am branded as “close-minded” or “an idiot.” In this current incarnation of the “Middle East problem,” Americans are obligated to take sides. Make that, side. One side.

‘The X Factor’ Results: Arin Ray And Beatrice Miller Sent Home In Double Elimination (VIDEO)

Even a holiday as cheerful as Thanksgiving couldn’t stop Simon Cowell from breaking a few hearts on “The X Factor” results show this week.

After a particularly emotional night on Wednesday, which saw the contestants dedicating songs to the people who inspire them most, Thursday saw two acts culled from the competition. The first came as little surprise, with 17-year-old Arin Ray earning the lowest number of votes after a lackluster performance of “Hero.”

The other two acts with the lowest scores were CeCe Frey (who sang “Wind Beneath My Wings” on Wednesday) and Beatrice Miller (“Chasing Cars”). The pair left everything on stage with their “save me” songs — CeCe performed “Because Of You,” while Beatrice tackled “White Flag,” and both struggled to finish the renditions because their emotions were running so high.

IN-TENTA DROP eco-hotel: a green way to live post-apocalyptically

INTENTA DROP ecohotel a green way to live postapocalyptically

Futuristic eco-hotels are nothing new, but there’s something unique about the one shown above: it’s well on its way to being created. Crafted by the Barcelona-based IN-TENTA creative design group, the removable hotel room is scheduled to be manufactured by Urban Square. Reportedly, it’ll be dropped into “natural locations,” with the shell keeping everything above ground in order to make a minimal dent in the Earth itself. As these things usually go, there doesn’t seem to be much talk on how the plumbing will be handled, but really, who cares about details when you’re living like this?

Self-Filling Water Bottle

Science had always drawn inspiration from nature – take flight for example. Well, the Namib Desert beetle proved to be an inspiration for NBD Nano co-founder Deckard Sorensen, where this beetle can live in an area which receives a mere 0.5” of rainfall annually, and it survives by drawing 12% of its weight in water from the air in order to prevent it from dying of thirst. Deckard Sorensen decided to work on a similar model, resulting in a self-filling water bottle that will hopefully be able to hit the worldwide market by the time 2014 arrives.

Sorenson intends to mimic nature with a water bottle that has a surface layered with hydrophilic and hydrophobic coatings, where a fan is used to pass air over the surface, and it eventually gets water to condense, resulting in a self-filling water bottle.

Sorenson said, “We use nanotechnology to mimic this beetle’s back so that we too can pull water from the air.We see this being applicable to anything from marathon runners to people in third-world countries, because we realize that water is such a large issue in the world today, and we want to try to alleviate those problems with a cost-efficient solution. We are looking to incorporate this in greenhouses or green roofs in the immediate future, and then later on, we’re looking to see how far we can really scale this up to supply maybe farms or larger agricultural goals.”

Black Friday Sale Rush Creeps Into Thanksgiving

NEW YORK — The nation’s shoppers put the turkey down to take advantage of an early start to the holiday shopping season.

Stores typically open in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving that’s named Black Friday because that is when they traditionally turn a profit for the year. But Black Friday openings have crept earlier and earlier over the past few years. Now, stores from Target to Toys R Us open their doors as early as Thanksgiving evening.

Black Friday Activities: Post-Thanksgiving Alternatives To Shopping

In recent years, Black Friday has become a controversial post-Thanksgiving tradition. While the Seattle Times traces the origins of the name to shopkeepers getting “back in the black” financially speaking, the busiest shopping day of the year has been taken to an extreme. Violence, greed, and even death have become part of the Black Friday culture.

In addition, Black Friday kicks off the most wasteful time of the year. The EPA reports that between Thanksgiving and New Years Day, families increase their household waste by 25% and add an extra million tons of waste per week to landfills. Gift wrap and shopping bags add four million tons of waste annually, much of which is produced and discarded in the coming months.

Some, like Salon‘s Andrew Leonard, believe that the culture surrounding Black Friday exacerbates this wastefulness and materialism. “There’s a point where healthy consumerism becomes out-of-control marketing-driven commodity fetishism,” Leonard wrote last year. “There is a point in our culture beyond which camp and kitsch no longer make the least ironic sense, where consumerism loses its last mooring to civilization…that point is Black Friday.”

Harwell Dekatron Digital Computer Refurbished

What is touted as one of the world’s first digital computers, the Harwell Dekatron, which was created to do away with handwritten calculations of human “computors”, is about to be on the receiving end of an official reboot which could eventually result in it occupying a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Already 61 years old, the Harwell Dekatron which weighs as much as an SUV (being around that size a well) was originally capable of delivering error-free calculations as it runs for 90 hours a week, and it has managed to survive as one of the oldest original working digital computer, especially after it was restored by The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) in the UK.

The Harwell Dekatron itself relies on 480 relays which have plenty in common with telephone exchanges of today compared to the modern day computer. Relays will reside within a collection of racks, which in turn holds 828 flashing Dekatron valves that are actually gas-filled counting tubes that saw action in the early days of computing instead of the transistors found in modern electronics.
