Laser Beams Aid Pedestrians To Cross The Road Safely

I clearly remember that laser room in the first Resident Evil movie which was certainly a pants wetting experience for those in there, and I was quite bummed that the leader of the group tried his best to escape before the entire “net” of lasers sliced him to bits. Well, lasers could harm, and if used correctly, they could also help us humans. Not to bust a door open by cutting a hole through it, but rather, this concept design by Hojoon Lim hopes that laser beams fired at a safe frequency will see action at crosswalks, helping keep pedestrians safe. Known as the Guardian system (for obvious reasons), it aims (pun not intended) to further improve road safety and help prevent traffic accidents.

Apparently, the Guardian laser system will prevent humans and vehicles from crossing paths simultaneously – hence reducing the risk of an accident between the two. When folks need to cross the street, laser beams will shoot out horizontally to warn vehicles that they should stop, and when it is time for the pedestrians to stop, the laser beams will alternate to prevent them from getting onto the sidewalk. Sounds energy intensive to me…

Qeexo Knows Which Part Of Your Hand Touches The Screen

Your smartphone would truly deserve the “smart” moniker if it were to be able to tell just which body part, or more specifically, which part of your hand is touching the touchscreen display, don’t you think so? While that sounds rather impossible at first glance without the help of a camera and some complex algorithms, startup Qeexo has come up with a potentially revolutionary solution – by expanding the interaction between you and your touchscreen device through the introduction of a new dimension of touch, thanks to its FingerSense technology. FingerSense technology will rely on a tiny acoustic sensor that can measure vibrations, and actually “listen in” to how you touch the screen.

Just how does this small wonder work? Well, FingerSense technology will enhance touch interaction by enabling displays to know just how the finger is being used for input, and it can tell whether your fingertip, knuckle or nail is being called to action. Apart from that, it will obviously be able to handle stylus interaction as well, meaning you are able to perform various functions via FingerSense technology. For instance, touching it with a knuckle could result in a right click, and I believe we might see some interesting touch-based games that require dexterity and quick reflexes to boot.

2027 Maglev Train Carriage Unveiled

Bullet trains are one of the most popular modes of public transport in Japan, especially during the daily commute from one prefecture to another. Well, these bullet trains are called so for one specific reason – they are fast, extremely fast. Still, the need for speed has been an obsession with train engineers, and recently, the carriage of the Maglev bullet train series which are meant to run between Tokyo and Nagoya from 2027 onward was revealed to the world at a test line in Japan by the Central Japan Railway recently. The front carriage itself measures 28 meters long, 2.9 meters wide and 3.1 meters tall, where it comes complete with a blue stripe on a white base. The front carriage is capable of carrying 24 passengers, while the other carriages on the train are able to carry 68 passengers each. To get an idea on how fast it is, you can leave your Ferrari at home – the train zips along at a maximum speed of 500 kilometers per hour.

To date, a total of five carriages for the Maglev train have been constructed by Nippon Sharyo and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, where test runs on these carriages will be carried out after ongoing work so that the test line can be extended, and all tests are scheduled to be completed by next year.

Coke Peak Shift Vending Machines In Japan

We all know that Japan is one country that is unbelievably clean, and the folks there do have a very high regard for the environment. Well, Coca-Cola Japan is doing its part by unveiling a spanking new range of innovative energy-saving vending machines that is known as Peak shift vending machines. These vending machines will be able to shift the use of power for cooling from the general daytime peak demand period to nighttime, where relatively speaking, there is a whole lot less amount of strain which is placed on power supply.

During summer, these machines will be able to provide cooled products for 16 hours – all the while reducing daytime power consumption by a whopping 95%. Power consumption will also be lowered during winter time by 20% compared to current vending machines, and when you merge that with the amount of juice consumed for cooling, we are talking about a potential game changer, being a vending machine that potentially reduces power consumption by 68%. Around 25,000 of these new vending machines will be installed throughout Japan next year.

Sony Patents Haptic Feedback Stylus

There is nothing quite like a stylus to go along with your touchscreen device, especially if you want to get really, really productive without leaving smudges all over your display. I mean, playing the Nintendo DS when it first game out without the stylus was all passable, but your finger meant nothing when it came to games such as Trauma Center or Elite Beat Agents. Sony has come up with a new stylus which they have already filed a patent for, where it boasts of a roller design that relies on actuators to alter stylus tip resistance.

In a nutshell, this new haptic feedback stylus will not rely on the vibration method that majority of the other devices out there use, but rather, a “rolling contact ball gripping mechanism” located on the end of a stylus will use actuators so that it can increase or decrease the ball’s resistance to rolling, in essence making life easier (or harder) for the stylus to zip all over the display. We do wonder just how much the cost of such a stylus will be, and would it be that indispensable that folks are willing to fork out a (relatively) handsome amount for it?

Microsoft Works On New Set Top Box?

There are whispers going around at the moment that Microsoft is currently working on a device that will rival the Apple TV when it is released, but it does come with an advantage – to feature casual gaming. Different sources on the ground do report of claims that Microsoft’s strategy of spinning off a new set-top box range is to help supplement its future Xbox strategy. Apparently, it is part of an alleged dual SKU strategy for the next generation of Xbox hardware which is tipped for a 2013 announcement. Not only that, the rumors have it that this new hardware strategy will result in a release before the frenzied holiday shopping season begins, placing Microsoft in a rather strategic position of capturing the attention of living rooms.

The Verge did mention that this upcoming device, if true, will run the core components of Windows 8, with the possibility of RT thrown into the mix, where it is capable of supporting casual gaming titles instead of the full blown Xbox gaming experience. We await leaks on the hardware specifications – what do you think of Microsoft’s alleged effort? Will it be able to carve out a niche of its own?
