QOOQ, The French Tablet, Can Help You Prepare Your American Feast

QOOQ may just be the strangest digital tablet the world has ever seen. It takes to the extreme a maxim from computer scientist Alan Kay, which Steve Jobs liked to quote: “People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.”

Now those who are really serious about food have QOOQ, conveniently pronounced “cook.”

Launched in the U.S. in November, QOOQ could have been another foodie app for devices made by Apple or Amazon. But the messiness of the kitchen requires a hardy, specialized tablet — or at least that’s the thinking of French company UNOWHY, which began selling QOOQ to French-speakers in 2009. Now that it’s in the United States, HuffPost decided to try this first touchscreen tablet for cooking, as QOOQ claims, on our country’s biggest eating day, Thanksgiving.

Google Now awarded Popular Science’s Innovation of the Year

Popular Science has given Google Now its “Innovation of the Year” award, putting it alongside past winners like the Large Hadron Collider, the Toyota Prius and the Mars Curiosity Rover. It’s august company to be sure, and the reasoning behind the decision is that it’s “the first virtual assistant that truly anticipates your needs.” The service has grown quite a bit since its initial launch — from personalized recommendations to public safety alerts and the addition of a pedometer, it seems that these are early days yet for the context- and location-aware app. Hit the Android G+ source link to read a Q&A between PopSci and part of the Google Now team to get some behind-the-scenes insight of the award-winning service.

Lavi S21i manages to KIRF the new iMac before the real one arrives

There’s a growing trend of Apple KIRFs arriving well head of the devices they’ve been designed to imitate. While Sir Jonathan’s latest desktops meander towards stores, the Windows 7 or 8-running Lavi S21i can be yours right now. The 21.5-inch machine has a 1,920 x 1,080 display, 4GB RAM and a choice of a 3.3GHz Sandy Bridge Intel Core i3 or a 2.9GHz Core i5, and your pick of a 500GB HDD or a 128GB SSD. The only real differences between this and its Californian counterpart is that the ports are tucked on the base of the display and its 4mm thicker, but it will only set you back 3,350 yuan ($540) or 3,850 yuan ($621). The only thing this KIRF is missing is the ability to fry your eggs for you in the morning, unless, you know, the manufacturers were scrimping on the safety features that day.

Peter Molyneux’s 22cans pitching Populous-esque project on Kickstarter, ‘Godus’

Peter Molyneux's 22cans pitching Populousesque project on Kickstarter, 'Godus'

Peter Molyneux, like so many of you, pines for the glory days of the studio he co-founded over 15 years ago, Bullfrog Productions. His new studio, 22cans, today announced launched its first initiative aimed at recreating those glory days, with “Godus” — a Kickstarter project to “recreate the god game.” Of course, Molyneux and Bullfrog were partially responsible for the original invention as well, with PC classic Populous. Like with Populous, you’ll control a virtual world and its people, building up (or tearing down) their society as you see fit; it seems the “re-invention” bit comes in the form of multiplayer and mobile play. The nascent studio of game industry vets is hoping for a seven to nine month turnaround on the project, post-Kickstarter (should it pass the £450,000 goal, that is), and it’s planned for launch on “PC and mobile devices.”

In the (hilarious) video 22cans included in its Kickstarter, the company revealed that its first title cum social experiment, Curiosity, already has “about 2 million downloads almost,” which we’d certainly call a success. The ever self-aware Molyneux also notes in the video that, “I don’t want to promise anything, I just want to deliver the glory of the old days in the new format of today’s world.” Even when he’s trying not to promise something, he just can’t help himself, eh? See for yourself below the break.
