At least a few Americans have been disappointed that the current version of the Samsung Galaxy Camera goes without LTE; when the data connection is intended almost exclusively for uploading massive photos, HSPA+ can only go so far. To our relief, Samsung knows our impatience well enough to have sent a version of its connected point-and-shoot with American 4G through the FCC’s approval gauntlet. This time, the camera goes under the EK-GC120 name (the HSPA+ model is the GC100) with LTE access on Verizon’s slice of the 700MHz spectrum — and that’s it for cellular access, without even a trace of foreign wireless bands. As such, there’s little doubt the GC120 is headed to Big Red and will have to resort to WiFi on any vacation outside of the US. Any uncertainty mostly rests around just when the Galaxy Camera arrives on Verizon’s network, and whether or not the extra wireless speed will demand a premium.

Starting today, Apple is now selling unlocked iPhone 5 handsets for those who want to eschew a contract and drop a few more Benjamins in the process. The unlocked units are available online via the U.S. Apple Store. All three models are available, with the price starting out at a hefty $649. Limit two per customer.
The 32GB model is priced at $749, and the 64GB is priced at $849. As notes Apple, the unlocked handset can only be used with supported networks, including AT&T. The phone requires a GSM network, and can be used in conjunction with a nano SIM card when travelling abroad. Because the phone requires a GSM network, it can’t be used with Verizon and Sprint or other CDMA options.
The handset doesn’t include a nano SIM, so be sure to factor one into your budget. Using one is simple: insert the SIM, then turn the phone on. A series of step-by-step instructions will appear on the screen. Follow them carefully, and you’ll be up and running in no time. Overall, this is an ideal way for users to get their iPhone fix without being bound to a two-year contract. The freedom comes with a substantial price tag, though.
The iPhone 5 features a 4-inch Retina display, and weighs in at a mere 112 grams. The handset is made from anodized aluminum, and is the same width as the 4S despite its larger screen size. Inside you’ll find an A6 chip. The purchase is rounded out with the inclusion of a pair of EarPods with a remote and microphone, as well as a Lightning-to-USB cord and a power adapter.

Dell’s $1,549 Ubuntu-based XPS 13 goes on sale, $50 more than Windows variant
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhat once was just an internal skunkworks project, Dell’s Project Sputnik has taken off with the release of the XPS 13 Developer Edition. The thin and light darling of the Ultrabook crowd is now shipping with a Precise Pangolin Ubuntu build pre-installed, along with feature-complete drivers that ensure maximum peripheral compatibility right out of the box. Also bundled in the XPS 13 are a couple of Project Sputnik’s open source tools — Profile Tool and Cloud Launcher — that are designed to help developers install and deploy their projects quickly and efficiently. The hardware packs quite a punch, with either an Intel i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256 GB SATA III SSD. All that Linux goodness comes at a cost, however — the Developer Edition retails for $1,549, which is around $50 more than the Windows equivalent. Still, it might be well worth it for one of the best specced pre-assembled open-source laptops we’ve seen to date.

JayBird has launched its premium micro-sized earbuds, the BlueBuds X. These earbuds are Bluetooth-enabled, and are the official training headphones of the USA Triathlon, indicating their usefulness for athletes who want to listen to music without dealing with a headphone cord. You can pick up a pair of BlueBuds X for $169.99.
The BlueBuds X feature PureSound, a white noise filter that removes the white noise generated by earbud headphones. This feature aims to stomp on the listener fatigue that commonly results from the white noise, producing a more enjoyable listening experience for longer periods of time. Meanwhile, the Signal Plus feature helps the audio remain stable via a “clear constant signal” to the accompanying Bluetooth player.
These little in-ear headphones feature approximately 8 hours of battery life, more than long enough for a week’s worth of workouts for most users. Keep in mind, this battery life is coming from a pair of micro earbuds that look scarcely large enough to include any sort of battery, let alone one that provides hours of playback. IPhone users can monitor battery life via an onscreen icon; charging is achieved with a micro-USB cable.
The BlueBuds X come with a lifetime warranty against sweat, which appears to be a fancy way of saying that they’re sweat-proof. They’re specifically designed to fit well for use during sports, while their micro-size makes them unobtrusive and comfortable; they can be used both over and under ear, depending on preference. As says the press release, these earbuds are “lock and loaded ready for anything you can dish out.”

Apple begins selling unlocked iPhone 5 in the US, starting from $649 (update: LTE band questions)
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt’s that special time of the year… that is, when Apple decides to unfetter the iPhone for US shoppers. The Cupertino crew has quietly started selling the iPhone 5 in an unlocked, off-contract form that will work on GSM, HSPA+ and (if you’re in the right countries) LTE networks. There’s few surprises versus what we’ve seen in years past, or in other regions: the unlocked iPhone 5 ships in the same capacities and colors as the carrier-bound model, and starts from $649. That’s still expensive for those still used to buying on an agreement, and it won’t represent as much bang-for-the-buck as a $350 Nexus 4. If you’re yearning for the LTE the Nexus 4 lacks and don’t mind living in an iOS universe, however, Apple is ready and waiting.
Update: Apple doesn’t explicitly say which LTE bands this iPhone covers, although its sharing a similar core part number with the Canadian unlocked variant (MD293) suggests it might be the A1428, which offers LTE on AT&T and Canadian carriers. We’re working to confirm this, but we wouldn’t count on LTE beyond North America.
